Subject:Psychology
Description:Aim: To compare and study the marital quality, emotional intelligence and conflict resolution styles of distressed and non-distressed married couples; and to examine the interrelationships between these variables. Method: The study utilized a cross sectional, between group, mixed method research design. The sample consisted of 43 heterosexual married couples (N=86) in non-clinical settings, in the age range of 20-60 years, living in Bangalore, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were recruited through purposive/ snowball sampling. The participants were administered a demographic data sheet, the Marital Quality Scale (Shah, 1995), the Emotional Intelligence Scale (Schutte, Malouff, Hall, Haggerty, Cooper, & Golden, 1998), the Conflict Resolution Scale (Kurdek, 1994) and a Semi-structured Interview Schedule for qualitative data (prepared by the researcher). Quantitative and Qualitative analysis was carried out. The MQS cutoff score of 80 was used to divide the sample into distressed and nondistressed couples. Results: The two groups significantly differed on the conflict resolution styles. A significant relationship was found between marital quality and conflict resolution styles of distressed as well as non distressed group. There was a significant positive relationship between withdrawal as a conflict resolution style and marital quality among distressed wives. Correlations between marital quality and conflict resolution styles among non-distressed couples showed that withdrawal had a significant positive relationship with the marital quality of the husband. From the correlation between the emotional intelligence and conflict resolution styles of distressed couples, compliance had a significant positive relationship with the wife’s emotional intelligence. Among non-distressed wives conflictxii engagement was negatively correlated and positive problem solving was positively correlated with their emotional intelligence. Through the thematic analysis, multiple themes were identified as factors that are fundamental for a happy and long-term marriage and at the same time reveal the factors that can be detrimental to a successful marital relationship. These themes, including the importance of emotional intelligence in marital quality and ways of conflict resolution were classified. The study has implications for clinical practice and marital research. The study findings can be used by counsellors and therapists in helping distressed couples, and for premarital counselling work with individuals and dating couples to improve the chances of their marital quality. The primary limitation of the study was its small sample size that limits the ability to generalize the findings of the study. For future research a larger sample size can be considered to study the influence and impact in depth. The variables can be studied in different cultures to understand the cultural differences. Datta, Ruchira - 1730082A feminist study of food in select culinary narrativesPhDEnglish Studies

Subject:English Studies
Description:An academic study of food entails a study of food at the intersection of individual experience, socio-cultural significance and global politics of food. A study of the emerging genre of culinary narratives, therefore, is a study of women’s experience of food, shaped by the socio-cultural context she occupies and its interaction with the world food scenario. This research titled “A Feminist Study of Food in Select Culinary Narratives” studies Indian immigrant women’s relationship with food in the twenty-first century globalised, capitalist, multicultural, American society. The research places itself within the broader framework of literature, cultural and women’s studies and focuses on the emerging genre of South-Asian diasporic culinary narratives. It, therefore, adds to the limited scholarship on the genre of diasporic culinary narratives by looking at the works of Shoba Narayan’s Monsoon Diary: A Memoir with Recipes (2003),Amulya Malladi’s Serving Crazy with Curry (2007), Bharti Kirchner’s Pastries: A Novel of Desserts and Discoveries (2009) and Sandeepa Mukherjee Datta’s Bong Mom’s Cookbook (2013).Consequently, the research examines the various roles performed by food, as the immigrant woman navigates her geographical and cultural displacement. In this context, the research views food as a means for immigrant women to articulate their sense of ‘self’ and critiquing the standardization of women’s relationship with food by the capitalist food industry. Moreover, critiques of capitalist notions of women’s relationship with food further enables the select texts to re-envision women’s relationship with the kitchen and domestic work. The research also highlights the difference in the first and second generation immigrant women’s use of food to navigate their displacement. [show more]
George, Mathew - 1740071A framework for integrating nested queries in natural language interfaces to databasesPhDComputer Science
Type:PhD
Subject:Computer Science
Description:To translate Natural Language (NL) statements into Structured Query Language (SQL) queries, different methods and systems were proposed in the past. This work presents a framework for automating the translation of Data Requirement Specifications (DRS) given by enterprise Business Users in NL into SQL queries, focusing on requirements that result in the generation of nested SQLs. The framework takes the business user’s DRS given in English as input and generates an initial query sketch by employing semantic parsing. This initial sketch is further refined and completed into a well-formed SQL by consulting the Database Schema. It performs the translation by combining NL processing techniques with Query Sketch generation methods and refines it by employing Repair techniques or extends it further. The framework suggests using Lambda expressions for intermediate representation and employs standard operations of Lambda Calculus for performing the required transformations needed for translation. Lambda Context Calculus (LCC) provides the operational semantics and the relevant methods needed in transforming NL statements into SQL, preserving the integrity and compositionality24 of expressions in every step of the translation. Though Lambda Calculus is found to be effective in representing the intermediate expressions and assists in performing the transformations that are needed for translating specific predicates into SQL, its inflexibility in combining parallel computations is a constraint. To represent clauses that are in parallel or are in pipeline, and to perform the required transformations on the intermediate expressions involving these, more advanced programming constructs are needed. It also adopts functional programming techniques to deal with complex scenarios involving nested queries. This work recommends the use of some advanced language constructs, the Fixed-point Combinators11 and Monad Comprehensions20 for performing the required transformation at the intermediate language level and adopts functional programming techniques for the required syntactic sugar. Subject:English Studies
Description:This research examines interpersonal relationships in the select novels of Bernard Malamud from a metaxological perspective. By examining the formation of the community through individuals where there are agapeic service and transformation of individuals, it attempts to bring out the relevance of metaxological relationships that give importance to dialogue, ethical relationships and love. It is essential to understand the space between interpersonal relationships to lead a meaningful life in the contemporary world. It explores to ascertain whether human beings attain fulfilment in the community through transformation. This thesis addresses the issues that are relevant to the novelist in the context of Jewish identity and assumes that this study is essential since the study informs us about the interpersonal relationships which are very relevant in today’s context. This study claims that the interpersonal relationships portrayed in the novels of Malamud are metaxological because it affirms the self and transcends towards the other and forms a community where there is agapeic love and service. This research claims that interpersonal relationships attain its fulfilment through metaxological relationships. This mode of interpersonal relationships is relevant since it enables us to understand many existing problems between people, culture and nations, and to find a solution to it. The question of how to maintain a proper relationship with other human beings by giving equal importance to the individuals who are involved in the relationship is prominent today. The analysis of the novels based on metaxology changes our existing understanding of the interpersonal relationships and gives a new dimension to it. [show more]
Ranjan, Alka - 0944201A study of parenting behaviour and children's well-being in urban India familiesPhDPsychology
Type:PhD
Subject:Psychology
Description:The aim of the research is to study parenting behavior and children’s well-being in urban Indian families. Socialization, an important process in parent-child relationship is described as, ”the process by which a child or other novice acquires the knowledge, orientations, and practices that enable him / her to participate effectively and appropriately in the social life of a particular community” (Garret & Baquedano-Lopez, 2002, p. 339). Hence, socialization in the family is of crucial significance as it is the microcosm of society and has critical implications for the social and emotional development of the growing child. Parenting is a crucial process in family socialization. The word ‘parenting’ derives from the Latin verb ‘parere’ which means ‘to bring forth, develop or educate.’ Hoghughi, M. (2004) defines parenting as “purposive activities aimed at ensuring the survival and development of children.” It is of utmost importance to understand the dynamics of the parenting in varied cultures. Description:Education in ancient India in its traditional form was closely related to religion and was limited to a very small section of Indian society. Ancient education in India followed an oral tradition, which laid stress on memory. Subjects like arts and sciences related to government: politics, economics, philosophy, and historical traditions were taught (Thapar, 2002). With the arrival of Islam in India, the traditional methods of education underwent a change. Islamic institutions of education in India taught grammar, philosophy, mathematics, and law influenced by the Greek traditions inherited by Persia and the Middle East, before Islam spread from these regions into India. A feature of this traditional Islamic education was its emphasis on the connection between science and humanities. [show more]

Subject:Education
Description:Education is a social process by which knowledge is transferred to students through the intermediaries, the teachers. It can be had from non - formal and formal systems of Education. All formal systems are based on the classroom teaching. "The destiny of India is being shaped in her classroom", has been pointed out by the Indian Education Commission (KOTHARI COMMISSION) (1964-66) and to that, it may be safely added that the destiny of these classrooms is being shaped by the teachers. According to the American Commission, the quality of the nation depends upon the quality of the citizens. The quality of its citizens depends, not exclusively, but in critical measure upon the quality of their Education. The quality of their education depends more upon the quality of teachers. Humayun Kabir rightly said once, "Without good teachers even the best of system is bound to fall, with good teachers, even the defects of a system can be largely overcome". The teacher is the flywheel of the whole educational machine. Elaborate blue prints, modern school plans, the best equipment, the newest of the new media or progressive methods will remain dead fossils unless there is the right use of teachers. The document, Challenge of Education -A Policy Perspective (1985) has highlighted that teacher performance is the most crucial input in Education. No development has reached the threshold of development of new technology which is likely to revolutionize the classroom teaching. [show more]
