Changing equations: Empowerment, entrepreneurship and the welfare of women
The world is a melange of varied cultures and norms. Some are similar, while others are strikingly different from the rest. However, every society has something in common: suppression of their women although the degree and extent may vary. It is not that women are incapable of playing those roles in society which have been dominated by men, but consistent and strategic oppression of the female sex has led many women to consider themselves as weak, powerless and a step below their male counterparts. The waves of feminism and movements to emancipate women have, to a notable extent, changed this perception. However, the world still associates women with the domestic sphere which includes rearing, nurturing and caring for children. While, this is important, this must seldom be the only role played by women. This paper while highlighting the importance of the role of women in the economic and public sphere, shall also explore the various means and steps that have been taken and further measures that can be taken to empower women and encourage entrepreneurship in developing economies such as India. The capability approach and welfare economics by Amartya Sen shall also be explored to understand how best such approaches could benefit the rural women and their empowerment. Developing economies simply cannot ignore even a fraction of their demography. This paper would thus like to bring to the fore that empowerment of women is as important to an economy as it is for their individual well-being, and ultimately their liberation. 2018 Journal of International Women's Studies. -
An Examination of the Challenges Associated with Applying Artificial Intelligence Techniques to Specific Management Problems
Artificial intelligence (AI) holds immense promise in revolutionizing management practices across various sectors, offering solutions to complex problems and optimizing decision-making processes. However, the application of AI techniques to management problems is not without its challenges. This examination delves into the multifaceted hurdles encountered when integrating AI into management frameworks, highlighting key obstacles and potential avenues for overcoming them.AI algorithms heavily rely on large volumes of high-quality data for effective training and decision-making. Yet, many management domains grapple with disparate data sources, inconsistencies, and incomplete datasets, hindering the performance and reliability of AI systems. Furthermore, the dynamic nature of management problems poses a significant challenge to AI implementation. Management environments are characterized by evolving trends, uncertainties, and unforeseen disruptions, rendering static AI models inadequate in adapting to changing conditions. Hence, the development of agile AI systems capable of continuous learning and adaptation becomes essential for addressing the dynamic nature of management challenges. 2024, Collegium Basilea. Synthesis of bent-shaped azobenzene main-chain polymers for photo-switching properties
This work presents the synthesis of the new bent-core polymers with siloxane units connected to the one side of azobenzene units. The structure of siloxane-based azobenzene bent-core polymers, 7ac, was elucidated by spectral analysis (nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy). The results of gel permeation chromatography suggested that all polymers (7ac) showed polydisperse (polydispersity index >1). Besides, the extent of polymerization in the following order: 7a > 7b > 7c, where the degree of polymerization values were 7, 8 and 11, respectively. Polarizing optical microscopy revealed that the bent-core liquid crystal (BCLC) monomers, 6a and 6b, displayed the smectic A phase, whereas BCLC monomer 6c and all siloxane-based main-chain polymers (MCPs) (7ac) were crystalline in nature. The result of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy demonstrated that all MCPs (7ac) exhibited strong photoisomerization behavior in solution. All polymers (7ac) showed trans to cis isomerization in about 200 s, whereas the reverse process required much longer times ranging from 400 to 520 min in solution. The photo-switching study on azobenzene containing polymers stated that the effect of alkyl chain length and type of central core units on trans to cis isomerization were negligible. In contrast, both parameters influence the cis to trans process in which the photo-switching behavior of these materials may be primarily suitably exploited in the field of photo-induced phenomenon. 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. -
Investigating the in-flight performance of the UVIT payload on AstroSat
We have studied the performance of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope payload on AstroSat and derived a calibration of the far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) instruments on board. We find that the sensitivity of both the FUV and NUV channels is as expected from ground calibrations, with the FUV effective area about 35 per cent and the NUV effective area about the same as that of GALEX. The point spread function of the instrument is on the order of 1.2-1.6". We have found that pixel-to-pixel variations in the sensitivity are less than 10 per cent with spacecraft motion compensating for most of the flat-field variations. We derived a distortion correction but recommend that it be applied post-processing as part of an astrometric solution. 2018 The Author(s). -
Influence of alkali treatment on physiochemical and morphological properties of palmyra fibers
As a part of sustainable development in construction, natural fibers are used as reinforcement in cement composites. The degradation of these natural fibers in matrix has led to growing interest among researchers to enhance the fiber properties by adopting suitable treatment techniques. This research focuses on examining the influence of alkali treatment on various aspects, including the physical, chemical, crystallinity, mechanical and surface characteristics of palmyra fibers. Herein, the palmyra fibers were immersed in alkaline solution for different duration (30 minutes, 60 minutes and 120 minutes) to arrive at optimum treatment period. The investigation utilizes XRD, FTIR, SEM and EDS analysis to gain insights into these properties. The findings indicated that the treatment effectively removed excess amorphous components like extractives, hemicellulose and lignin leading to the increase in crystallinity index and surface roughness. The crystallinity index increased by 11 %, 13 % and 23 % for 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 120 minutes treatment respectively. The water absorption of palmyra fibers reduced by 13 %, 14 % and 14 % for 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 120 minutes treatment duration respectively. Additionally, SEM-EDS exhibited best results for 60 min treatment of fibers, with 38 % increase in Oxygen to Carbon ratio of cellulose compared to untreated fibers. Among the different treatment duration, the 60 minutes treatment duration of fibers in 0.5 M sodium hydroxide solution has exhibited considerable enhancement in properties. These enhancements in palmyra fiber properties post-alkali treatment suggests their potential utility in the reinforcement of composites using alkali treated palmyra fibers. 2024 The Authors -
Whats the best time to give work? A study on relationship between employee moods and performance at different time intervals
Employees change their behavior many times in a day due to many factors. It is not uncommon to see any employee being agitated over petty issues at work place. This paper aims at identifying meaning, relationships between moods and performance. Employees decision-making abilities depend on mood and his mood depend on his personality, work environment variables such as protocols, procedures, work events, dynamics of formal and informal communication. We equate this daily swing to three-time frames named morning, afternoon and evening. Our attempt has been to try to establish a relationship between moods and emotions and employee performance which can increase the productivity level of the employee. This research intends to establish a more robust relationship and involves better evaluative and interpretive models to cope with the non-linearitys related to the complexity of the model and facilitate better decision-making with more accurate and intricate or comprehensive yet simple approach. Development of such relationship will help managers in dealing with the employees and take measures to increase productivity by adopting suggestions and conclusions from this study. IJSTR2019. -

Dimensions of occupational stress impacting turnover intentions amongst BPO employees: An empirical study
Nowadays, many organizations are confronted with the problem of higher level of employee turnover that brings higher replacement costs to these companies. Especially analysing the current situation in the BPO Industry, it is observed that the turnover intention of call centre employees is greater than its expected level and has become a major threat to their existence. Job stress is one of the major factors which tremendously influences this problem. This study mostly focused upon the impact of job stress (JS) on employee turnover intention (Tl) of call centre employees in the BPO industry. Eight five respondents participated in the study. The study was carried out using the survey method. For the survey, the standardized questionnaire of Osipow (1998) for occupational stress and Rajkumar and Karthik Sridar (2015) for turnover intentions were used. The results revealed that scope of occupational stress, that is, role uncertainty/ambiguity, role boundary, role responsibility, and the physical environment had a substantial significant impact on turnover intentions of employees. The dimensions of occupational stress, that is, role insufficiency and role overload had a slight impact on turnover intentions of employees. The regression model stated that there was dependency between occupational stress and turnover intentions. The study suggested that empowerment should be provided at the workplace so that the employees can minimize their inter role distance and can increase job involvement. To make a productive workforce, the sub - variables of job stress like role stagnation, role isolation, and role overload should also be minimized by working more on the person-organization-fit at the time of recruitment and selection. -
Extreme photometric and polarimetric variability of blazar S4 0954+65 at its maximum optical and ?-ray brightness levels
In 2022 the BL Lac object S4 0954+65 underwent a major variability phase, reaching its historical maximum brightness in the optical and ?-ray bands. We present optical photometric and polarimetric data acquired by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) Collaboration from 2022 April 6 to July 6. Many episodes of unprecedented fast variability were detected, implying an upper limit to the size of the emitting region as low as parsec. The WEBT data show rapid variability in both the degree and angle of polarization. We analyse different models to explain the polarization behaviour in the framework of a twisting jet model, which assumes that the long-term trend of the flux is produced by variations in the emitting region viewing angle. All the models can reproduce the average trend of the polarization degree, and can account for its general anticorrelation with the flux, but the dispersion of the data requires the presence of intrinsic mechanisms, such as turbulence, shocks, or magnetic reconnection. The WEBT optical data are compared to ?-ray data from the Fermi satellite. These are analysed with both fixed and adaptive binning procedures. We show that the strong correlation between optical and ?-ray data without measurable delay assumes different slopes in faint and high brightness states, and this is compatible with a scenario where in faint states we mainly see the imprint of the geometrical effects, while in bright states the synchrotron self-Compton process dominates. 2023 The Author(s). Cyber-Threat Landscape in Healthcare Industry and Legal Framework Governing Personal Health Information in India
2021 and 2022 have been the years of frequent cyberattacks. India remains in the top 25 countries severely affected by the continuous cyber-attacks and tops the list. The healthcare department is amongst the most affected area. In 2020, the healthcare department suffered a severe impact with around 348K cyber-attacks alone on Indian healthcare infrastructure. The recent occurrence of cyber-attack on AIIMS hospital in December 2022 followed by several other incidences of data breaches have made the concerned authorities pro-active on exercising vigilance and reforming the legal and technical system to protect the health infrastructure. This paper has been developed on extensive literature and focuses on describing the nature of electronic health records, the risks they are exposed to along with as to why they are so susceptible to these cyber-risks. Furthermore, the paper also deals with different kinds of threats affecting the privacy and security of electronic health records specifically. The paper analyzes Indian legal framework, briefly compares it with international legal framework (specifically US & EU) and highlights the shortcomings in Indian legislative framework followed by laying down certain recommendations primarily highlighting the possible changes required in Indian legal framework and practices that can be adopted at organizational level to overcome and mitigate such risks. A method for identification of restarted radio sources from large radiosurveys
Active galaxies hosting radio jets can exhibit distinct active phases marked by two sets of radio lobes. Typically, these episodic radio sources have been identified through morphological observations. In addition, spectral characteristics-based methods are also employed wherever multi-frequency deep radio observations are available. However, these methods are inefficient in detecting restarted radio sources that do not exhibit a clear morphology. To address this, a method of using the spectral curvature (SPC=?150MHz1400MHz-?74MHz150MHz) to identify restarted radio sources is presented. This is based on the fact that restarted radio sources with significant remnant emission are expected to have concave spectra in contrast to the convex or straight spectra observed in most radio sources. We use available wide area radio surveys in the range of frequencies from 74MHz to 1.4GHz to search for episodic radio sources and to shortlist 9,405 sources based on the criteria of SPC?0.5. The candidates thus identified can be followed up for detailed morphological and spectral index studies. This method will find application in the automated identification of episodic radio sources in large radio sky surveys from telescopes like LOFAR and SKA. Indian Academy of Sciences 2025. -
Modelling, Temperature Analysis, and Mechanical Properties of Friction Stir Welding of Al-Cu Joints with Hardened OHNS Steel Tools
Friction stir welding (FSW) is a nearly modern welding method with vital advantages over the conventional welding process, such as lower distortion, enhanced mechanical properties, and eco-friendly. In FSW, the joint characteristics mainly depend on heat development during the joining process due to its solid-state joining method. The basic principles of thermomechanical methods during FSW are unknown since it is a new metal joining method. In this investigation, the 2D and 3D models of the tools with different pin forms were designed using SOLIDWORKS. The ANSYS software was used to investigate the temperature distributions near the weld zones. The fixture was designed and made according to the machine conditions. The base plates used were AA6101 and C11000; the tool material used was the Hardened OHNS steel tool with square and circular pin form. The temperature values were measured in each trial while joining of Al-Cu base plates along the weld line. The results reveal that in the joint area, a trial with high temperature leads to high ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and Charpy impact strength (CIS). Made at tool rotation speed 1200 rpm and feed velocity 20 mm/min of Hardened OHNS steel tool with circular pin form. The obtained UTS value at joints was less than that of Al and Cu base plates. The microhardness value detected at the joint area was higher than the Al and Cu base plates, providing high strength, and irregularly dispersed. 2022, Books and Journals Private Ltd.. Cost-effective route to nanodiamonds from low-rank coal and their fluorescent & dielectric characteristics
The synthesis of nanodiamonds from abundant and inexpensive precursors has recently piqued the curiosity of researchers. It has the potential to significantly reduce the cost of nanodiamonds and open up a plethora of new applications. In this work, fluorescent nanodiamonds with smaller particle sizes with rich surface functionality are synthesized from low-grade coal lignite by employing a facile acidic oxidation and ultrasonication approach. The extracted nanodiamond particles are hydrophilic and display high excitation-dependent fluorescence in the aqueous medium. The excitation-dependent fluorescence can be ascribed to the collaboration and competition of the OH and COOH functional groups. The as-synthesized nanodiamonds also show good dielectric permittivity and ac conductivity over a wide frequency range at room temperature. The present research opens up the possibility of mass production of nanodiamonds on the industrial scale from a low-cost precursor. 2021 -
Zagreb Radio Indices and Coindices
Zagreb radio index or coindex of a graph is defined based on the optimal radio labelling of the graph, where optimal refers to the labeling with a span equal to the radio number of the graph. We have defined the first and second Zagreb radio coindex, third Zagreb radio index, and coindex and calculated its value for some famous graphs. Furthermore, we established a certain relationship between Zagreb radio indices and the coindices of graphs. 2021 by the authors. -
ENVIRONMENTAL JURISPRUDENCE IN INDIA: A JOURNEY TOWARDS ATTAINING ECO-CENTRIC IDEALS
Environmental Law has had a long, arduous journey in India, but has been able to keep up with the many changes that have taken place, around the globe, and has helped shape India's environmental legal regime. By tracing the growth of environmental law, through different ages, and by highlighting some of those factors, which have contributed immensely to its growth, the idea is to identify certain false grounds and figure out ways to make environmental law more effective. By looking at it through a sociocultural lens, the aim is to examine as to whether culture, tradition and rituals can be imbibed into law or given a legal recognition, and thereby giving more power to law. The development of Earth Jurisprudence principles and the way in which it is sought to be imbibed in India and the challenges that it faces too are discussed. 2022 Universitat Rovira i Virgili. Mental health through forgiveness: Exploring the roots and benefits
Forgiveness is conceptualized as the process of making peace with life. The three sources of forgiveness, another person, oneself, and a situation or circumstance are capable of freeing a person from a negative association to the source that has transgressed against a person. Research studies show the mental health benefits associated with forgiveness. The present study explores the experiences of adults who practice forgiveness, specifically, the indicators of forgiveness, the childhood antecedents, and the benefits of forgiving behavior. The study uses a qualitative research approach following a phenomenological framework. A total of 12 adults, ranging from 25 to 40 years of age, who received a high score on Heartland Forgiveness Scale were included in the study. Using semi-structured in-depth interviews, their personal experiences were explored. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The themes emerged show that the childhood antecedents of forgiveness are parental influences and early childhood experiences. The indicators of forgiving behavior include positive emotional state, empathy and perspective taking, and religiosity. The themes identified are enhanced sense of well-being, improved self-acceptance, and competence to deal with challenges. Forgiveness enhanced physical and psychological well-being. The findings of the study have several implications for religious leaders, teachers, parents, mental health professionals, and trainers. 2016 The Author(s). Forgiving Behavior among Emerging Adults: The Influence of Religiosity and Spirituality and Personality Traits
The present study aims to examine the three important aspects of emerging adulthood, religiosity and spirituality, personality traits, and forgiveness which bring well-being benefits. It is hypothesized that religiosity and spirituality along with personality traits predict forgiveness among emerging adults. The Neo Five-Factor Inventory (NEO FFI), the Religiosity and Spirituality Scale for Youth (RaSSY), and the Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS) were administered to 364 female and 390 male emerging adults (n = 754; mean age = 21 years, SD = 14.88) selected through purposive sampling technique from colleges in Bangalore. Data were analyzed using correlational and hierarchical regression analysis. This study found that religiosity and spirituality and the Big Five personality traits positively correlated with forgiveness whereas all personality traits, except neuroticism, strongly predicted forgiveness more than religiosity and spirituality. These findings suggest that faith-based coping and religious social support in combination with personality traits help emerging adults practice forgiveness in their daily life, leading to further insight into the theories of forgiveness and well-being. 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. -
Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Network Using Energy Efficient Priority Based Routing
Internet of Thing (IoT) collects huge amount of data from the surrounding by monitoring and sensing. Further, transferring these data from IoT devices to cloud environment seems is very challenging. Such that, this paper concentrates on energy consumption, in which the energy efficient routing and priority dependent techniques are proposed. This technique depends upon the RPL network (Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy), which efficiently predicts routing over contents. Every network slot utilizes timing pattern while forwarding image data, audio data. The proposed method enhances the strength of routing protocol and also avoids congestion. The outcomes of the study illustrates that proposed Energy efficient priority based routing (EEPR) technique minimize overheads on mesh, energy consumption and end-end delay. Also, the proposed method outperforms the existing QRPL methods in IoT platform. 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature. -
Compositionally Homogeneous Soft Wrinkles on Elastomeric Substrates: Novel Fabrication Method, Water Collection from Fog, and Triboelectric Charge Generation
Functionality and stimuli-response of natural and artificial elastomeric materials depend significantly on the morphology of their surfaces. Structural transformability and tunable responsiveness of wrinkles on elastomeric materials can enable numerous applications in flexible electronics, optics, and adhesives. Currently existing fabrication techniques rely on sophisticated instrumentation, complex experimental setups, and expensive reagents. These methods are limited in terms of mechanical robustness of the wrinkles produced. Here, a simple, inexpensive, scalable, and reproducible strategy, making use of buckling instability for the creation of soft surface wrinkles on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is presented. PDMS with lower elastic modulus is spin-coated onto a mechanically stretched film of PDMS with a higher elastic modulus. Thermal curing followed by the release of prestrain resulted in the formation of wrinkles in the top layer of the PDMS. The hydrophobic soft surface wrinkles with compositional homogeneity exhibit efficient fog water collection and triboelectric charge generation useful for the preparation of triboelectric nanogenerator devices. Furthermore, the substrates show high mechanical stability and mechanoresponsive optical behaviors. The simplicity and general applicability of the method presented here is expected to establish a promising pathway toward the formation of soft wrinkles in other elastomeric systems also, facilitating important applications in various fields. 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.
