Stacked LSTM and Kernel-PCA-based Ensemble Learning for Cardiac Arrhythmia Classification
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the most prevalent causes of death and disability worldwide. Cardiac arrhythmia is one of the chronic cardiovascular diseases that create panic in human life. Early diagnosis aids physicians in securing life. ECG is a non-stationary physiological signal representing the heart's electrical activity. Automated tools to detect arrhythmia from ECG signals are possible with Machine Learning (ML). The ensemble learning technique combines the power of two or more classifiers to solve a computational intelligence problem. It enhances the performance of the models by fusing two or more models, which extremely increases its strength. The proposed ensemble Machine learning amalgamates the potency of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and ensemble learning, opening up a new direction for research. In this research work, two novel ensemble methods of Extreme Gradient Boosting-LSTM (EXGB-LSTM) are developed, which use LSTM as a base learner and are transformed into an ensemble learner by coalescing with Extreme Gradient Boosting. Kernel Principal Component Analysis (K-PCA) is a significant non-linear dimensionality reduction technique. It can manage highdimensional datasets with various features by lowering the dimensionality of the data while retaining the most crucial details. It has been applied as a preprocessing step for feature reduction in the dataset, and the performance of EXGB-LSTM is tested with and without K-PCA. Experimental results showed that the first method, fusion of EXG-LSTM, has reached an accuracy of 92.1%, Precision of 90.6%, F1-score of 94%, and Recall of 92.7%. The second proposed method, KPCA with EXGB-LSTM, attained the highest accuracy of 94.3%, with a precision of 92%, F1-score of 98%, and Recall of 94.9% for multi-class cardiac arrhythmia classification. Decolonizing the Home at Home in the Pandemic: Articulating Women's Experience
Feminism bears the promise of liberation of and equality for women. Reading and teaching feminist texts, within the academia and in activist spaces, has provided the opportunity to explore what it means to become and be a woman. This article explores the experience of teaching a course on women's writing at the undergraduate level during the COVID-19 pandemic. Normally, a course on feminist writings is an occasion for self-reflection, thereby providing an opportunity to establish a dialogue between the domestic and the public. Such dialogues took place in secure institutional spaces such as classrooms or conference halls, without the intrusion of the domestic. However, as the teacher-student interaction shifted to an online mode during the pandemic, all the participants in this dialogue, including the instructor and the students, found themselves in domestic spaces, with family members listening. The article chronicles the anxieties of a woman instructor, as she teaches feminist texts from home to learners who are sitting behind computer screen in their homes and the possible impact of feminist ideas on the domestic spaces of all participants. 2022 The Author(s). God has signed: Nature, divinity and mysticism in the poetry of Kuvempu
Kuvempu wrote a large number of poems on the mysteries of nature. Kuvempu hails from the heart of Western Ghats and he spent his childhood and youth exploring the forests around his house. Untrammelled nature was both mysterious and beautiful; hence nature turned out to be a primary inspiration to write poetry. Kuvempu looks outward, seeking to comprehend the oneness of all in nature through his senses. But he is also struck by the inability to comprehend and explain nature through senses. Often he expresses his awe at natural sights such as dawn (which appears to him as a God's signature) or the greenery of Western Ghats (which seems to have painted everything in nature in green, including poet's soul and the blood in the stomach). This leads Kuvempu to resort to mysticism in order to relate, comprehend and sing about nature. He sees in nature the divine presence. Computational investigation into the structure, effect of band gap energies, charge transfer, reactivity, thermal energies and NADPH inhibitory activity of a benzimidazole derivative
This work contains computational investigations of a benzimidazole derivative consisting of density functional theory, electronic structure and biological evaluation of a benzimidazole derivative. Density functional theory evaluation were conducted, starting from geometry optimisation, followed by the molecular electrostatic potential, spectral analyses, polarizability studies and thermodynamic analyses via the frequency calculations. Solvent frontier molecular orbital analyses, impact on the properties of the molecule were modelled with the IEFPCM model of solvation. Topological analyses helped to ascertain the molecule's electronic structure. Biological assessment included pharmacokinetic property evaluation and molecular docking. Pharmacokinetic descriptors were generated using online tools and the molecule was assessed for its efficacy as a drug molecule by comparing with the rules concerning drug-likeness and analysing the descriptors relating to absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity of the molecule. Docking of the molecule with the two targets, 7D3E and 3A1F, yielded a good binding energy of ?7.39 and ?5.81 kcal/mol respectively. 2024 Elsevier B.V. -
Quantum computational, solvation and in-silico biological studies of a potential anti-cancer thiophene derivative
Heterocyclic molecules display a wide spectrum of properties that span both material and biological domains. Material properties stem from their interactions in the bulk, where a large number of molecules of the same type get together resulting in an enhancement of properties. However, biological properties emanate from the interaction of a single or a few molecules with a biologically functional macromolecule. Computational tools offer a particularly useful way of theoretically studying molecules to arrive at a conclusion regarding such properties, even though they may vary when experimentally evaluated. This study concerns itself with the theoretical investigation comprising density functional theory calculations, topological analyses and in-silico biological evaluation of a thiophene compound, i.e. the title compound. Density functional theory was used to compute properties of the title molecule and their variations in unsolvated and solvated phases using Gaussian 09. The molecule in solvent phases encompassing organic polar protic, organic polar aprotic and inorganic polar protic nature have been subjected to theoretical investigations. The suitability of the molecule for deployment as a modern optical material is examined with positive results. Topological characteristics of the molecule were evaluated using Multiwfn 3.8 to examine electron density distribution and the possible resulting covalent, non-covalent and weak interactions because of such distribution. The potency of the molecule towards brain cancer was evaluated by molecular docking with Auto Dock Tools against two brain cancer protein targets 6ETJ and 6YPE with a good docking score of ?6.63 and ?6.21 kcal mol?1 respectively and the resulting interactions visualized and its pharmacokinetic properties obtained using online tools. 2024 Elsevier B.V. -
Assessing Land Use Transformation in Kanhangad Town: A Special Emphasis on Wetland Ecosystems
Kerala, renowned for its lush landscapes, is facing environmental challenges due to rapid urbanization, particularly in Kanhangad. This area, notable for its unique wetland ecosystem crucial for biodiversity and human livelihoods, is experiencing a conflict between residential development and wetland conservation. A comprehensive study in Kanhangad, employing diverse data sources such as open-source data, Google Earth Satellite Imagery, OpenStreetMap, and tools like ArcGIS, provides a detailed analysis of land use and its environmental impacts. The study combines digital data analysis with physical surveys to understand the ecological and developmental status comprehensively. The study reveals a dominant trend in Kanhangad's land use, with residential areas comprising 52% of the total land, mostly large, detached single-family homes. This reflects a societal shift towards viewing homes as status symbols, contributing to natural resource depletion. The research underscores the need for sustainable, low-cost housing, suggesting vertical housing as a potential solution to balance residential demands with environmental conservation. Kanhangad's wetlands, essential for local biodiversity and livelihoods, face threats from urban development and infrastructural expansion. The study shows a drastic reduction in wetland area, from 12.9 km in 2004-05 to just 1.66 km by 2020-21, indicating severe ecological degradation. Despite the Kerala Conservation of Paddy land and Wetland Act of 2008, which aims to protect these ecosystems, its limited effectiveness is evident from the ongoing depletion of wetlands. This situation calls for stricter enforcement of environmental regulations and greater public involvement in conservation efforts. Furthermore, the research examines the Kerala Paddy and Wetland Conservation Act-2008, analysing its role and effectiveness in local environmental governance. The Act, focusing on prohibiting wetland and paddy land conversion, is vital for regional conservation. However, gaps in its implementation are highlighted, especially considering the exacerbation of the 2018 and 2019 Kerala floods due to land conversion practices. Radio pulsar sub-populations (II): The mysterious RRATs
Several conjectures have been put forward to explain rotating radio transients (RRATs), the newest subclass of neutron stars, and their connections to other radio pulsars. This work discusses these conjectures in the context of the characteristic properties of the RRAT population. Contrary to expectations, it is seen that: (a) the RRAT population is statistically un-correlated with the nulling pulsars and (b) the RRAT phenomenon is unlikely to be related to old age or death-line proximity. It is perhaps more likely that the special emission property of RRATs is a signature of them being later evolutionary phases of other types of neutron stars which may have resulted in restructuring their magnetic fields. 2022, Indian Academy of Sciences. -
Beyond Binary: Exploring the Dynamics of Bi-Curiosity Propulsion and Persistence Among Young Women
Sexual identity fails to adhere to the dichotomous models, transcending to a more fluid quality than normative compulsory heterosexuality. The present study investigates the experience of bi-curiosity, focusing on its initiation among young women residing in urban India. Bi-curiosity, a sexual orientation questioning marked by exploratory experiences, is a possible but not a necessary precursor to bisexuality. This qualitative study explores on the psychological and social factors contributing to a bi-curious orientation. It focuses on the subjective processes of development and maintenance of sexual identity questioning. Three organizing themes emerged from the Reflective Thematic Analysis: (a.) Affective Indicators, (b.) Social Experiences, and (c.) Intimacy in friendships. While sexual identity questioning was propelled by more psychological factors, like physical attraction, fantasy, experienced jealousy toward men, and comfort with the same sex, social and environmental factors contribute significantly. Individual experiences with patriarchy, social attitudes toward same-sex relationships, and their representation on media platforms often reinforce the process. Another important contributor was womens close friendships with the same sex, which are sites for physical closeness, emotional intimacy, and personal growth, and share these characteristics with romantic relationships. Predictors of emotional and behavioral problems among Indian adolescents: A clinic-based study
Background: Emotional and behavioral problems place a heavy burden on the adolescents and their families. Many factors are known to influence adolescent mental health. The current study was designed to determine the predictors of emotional and behavioral problems among Indian adolescents. Methods: The parents of adolescents in the age group of 10 to 18 (N = 81) were recruited from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (Parent version), Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire (Parent version) and, the Parent Interview Schedule (PIS) were used to assess the parental practices, emotional and behavioral problems and abnormal psychosocial environment of the adolescents. The data were analyzed with stepwise multiple linear and Quantile regression to find out significant predictors of emotional and behavioral problems among adolescents. Results: Adolescent's age, parental involvement, and paternal age are the significant predictors of emotional problems. Parental mental disorder or deviance, gender, and inconsistent discipline are the significant predictors for conduct problems. Poor monitoring and supervision, paternal and maternal age are statistically significant predictors of prosocial skills among the adolescents. Inadequate or distorted intrafamilial communication and parental mental disorder are the significant predictors of total difficulties among the adolescents. Conclusion: The study validates the role of abnormal psychosocial environments and negative parenting practices as risk factors for emotional and behavioral problems among the adolescents. A comprehensive analysis which covers all possible variables related to adolescent mental health is mandatory for the health professionals before planning the intervention. 2018 Elsevier B.V. -
MOF derived cobalt-phospho-boride for rapid hydrogen generation via NaBH4 hydrolysis
Developing effective transition metal catalysts that can replace precious metal-based catalysts for hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of chemical hydride has attracted extensive interest. This study focuses on synthesizing cobalt phospho-boride (CoPB) within a metal-organic framework (MOF) framework using hydrothermal and chemical reduction methodologies. Incorporating boron and phosphorous into Co-MOF enhances the hydrogen generation rate, reaching 1.8 L/min/g and 3.6 L/min/g for CoB-MOF and CoPB-MOF, respectively, during NaBH4 hydrolysis. Along with the nanostructured morphology of MOF, the electron modulation around Co-sites due to the presence of P and B creates a synergic effect to produce this high H2 generation rate and very low activation energy of 20.7 kJ/mol. The kinetic studies on NaBH4 hydrolysis reaction revealed zero-order kinetics with respect to NaBH4 concentration for CoPB-MOF, where porous morphology renders facile movement of BH4? ions to the active sites. The heat treatment at 773 K in the N2 atmosphere did not show any significant fall in the activity of CoPB-MOF, thus showcasing its robust nature. Lignin nanoparticles from Ayurvedic industry spent materials: Applications in Pickering emulsions for curcumin and vitamin D3 encapsulation
Lignin nanoparticles (LNP), extracted from spent materials of Dashamoola Arishta (Ayurvedic formulation), shared a molecular weight of 14.42 kDa with commercial lignin. Processed into LNPs (496.43 0.54 nm) via planetary ball milling, they demonstrated stability at pH 8.0 with a zeta potential of ?32 0.27 mV. Operating as Pickering particles, LNP encapsulated curcumin and vitamin D3 in sunflower oil, forming LnE + Cu + vD3 nanoemulsions (particle size: 347.40 0.71 nm, zeta potential: ?42.27 0.72 mV) with high encapsulation efficiencies (curcumin: 87.95 0.21%, vitamin D3: 72.66 0.11%). The LnE + Cu + vD3 emulsion exhibited stability without phase separation over 90 days at room (27 2 C) and refrigeration (4 1 C) temperatures. Remarkably, LnE + Cu + vD3 exhibited reduced toxicity, causing 29.32% and 34.99% cell death in L6 and RAW264.7 cells respectively, at the highest concentration (50 ?g/mL). A Methodological Framework for Descriptive Phenomenological Research
Background: Descriptive phenomenological research is crucial in nursing for understanding individuals experiences, perceptions, and relationships, which are essential for person-centered healthcare. However, a common critique is that researchers often use phenomenological methods without fully comprehending their historical and philosophical foundations. Existing literature highlights discrepancies in the application of phenomenological principles by nurse researchers, particularly in their presentation of philosophical underpinnings and methodological details. Aim: This article aims to provide a comprehensive methodological framework for descriptive phenomenological research in nursing, addressing both theoretical and practical aspects to guide novice researchers. Data Sources: This framework synthesizes existing scholarship on descriptive phenomenology. Discussion: Starting from Husserl, this article provides a detailed overview of the history, foundations, and philosophical assumptions of the methodology. It also includes key terms and a comprehensive detailing of all aspects of the research process. Conclusion: This framework enriches existing scholarship by offering a streamlined, step-by-step methodological guide for researchers embarking on descriptive phenomenological studies. It emphasizes the importance of establishing minimum, yet critical criteria for publishing research employing this methodology. Implications for Research: Future nurse researchers are encouraged to enhance methodological transparency in their descriptive phenomenological studies to facilitate rigorous evaluation of method effectiveness and study quality. Synthesis of emeraldine PANI polymer-reduced graphene and its use as polyelectrolyte
Abstract: Reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/polyaniline (PANI) composites grabbed the interest of researcher towards the development of electrolyte material. In present research work, we have focused on the synthesis of rGO and PANI by chemical method. The composites are prepared using different amounts of rGO/PANI and lithium carbonate. The main objective is to enhance structural and electrochemical properties of polymer composites. It is observed that proper interface of polymer composites leads towards the desired chargedischarge capacity and cyclic stability with the diffusion of electrons and electrolyte ions. This particular study can be further used for the development of electrochemical device applications. Fluorescent Carbonized Polymer Dots Derived from o-phenylenediamine and its Photonic Application
Optimizing the optoelectronic characteristics of low-dimensional carbon dots (CDs) through surface modifications and doping has proven instrumental in tailoring them for diverse applications. This study explores a facile and economical hydrothermal synthesis method for generating Carbonized Polymer Dots using o-phenylenediamine at different temperatures. The resulting materials exhibit structural and morphological variations linked to the synthesis temperature. A transition from carbon dots (CDs) embedded in reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-like sheet structures at low temperatures to the core-shell structure at the highest temperature is observed in HR-TEM, implying the formation of CPDs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) corroborates these findings, showing an augmented degree of graphitization in alignment with HR-TEM results. The photoluminescence spectra of CPDs synthesized at the lowest temperature exhibit multiple emission peaks, resulting in a yellowish-orange color. Utilizing these CPDs to fabricate light-emitting diodes (LEDs) produces a vivid bright-green emission with CIE coordinates (0.378, 0.522). Moreover, the CPDs demonstrate solvatochromism across diverse solvents of varying polarity, covering the entire visible spectrum. This intriguing solvatochromic effect positions the CPDs as promising materials for polarity probing applications. The Politics of Cultural Homogenization and Territorialization: Representation of Northeast in Tinkle's WingStar Series
Tinkle, the children's magazine in English in India has been instrumental in shaping the imagination of the young urban Indian child ever since its inception in 1980. No other magazine has the readership and reach that Tinkle enjoys with a circulation of more than 3 lakh. The fact that Tinkle has survived unlike many other magazines in India for 40 odd years is testimony (marketing strategies aside) of its reach and popularity. Tinkle, ever since the days of its founder-editor Anant Pai, has been instrumental in constructing imagined communities of national identities for children in India over the decades since the 1970s ever since the Amar Chitra Kathas. One such attempt in constructing children's imaginaries is the addition of a series Wing Star in 2015, scripted by Sean D'mello and inked by Vineet Nair that features Mapui Kawlim, a 13-year-old superhero from Aizwal, Mizoram. While it is empowering that a national mainstream popular magazine for children would feature a female superhero from among the less represented Northeastern states, what is problematic, according to this study, is the manner in which there has been a conscious erasure of all markers of her ethnicity by appropriating her into the larger mainstream homogenised pan-Indian identity of a young female superhero with no specific markers to represent the culture she belongs to. This study will attempt to read this 'sanitised' representation of a Northeastern superhero in the light of the idea of cultural appropriation and deterritorialization and reterritorialization posited by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari that looks at the erasure of specific ethnic and other identities markers. This study will also engage with the implications of how 'sanitised' representations like this in popular narratives would construct and homogenise the imaginaries of the children of a country as they would grow up with erroneous notions of cultural ethnicities and diversity within the country adding to the problematics of marginalisation and hegemonic nationalities. 2022 Aesthetics Media Services. Agency and self expression: Fan writing as life writing
Fans, fandoms and fan activities have been part of every culture from time immemorial. Homers epics, Platos work all could be considered in a broad sense as belonging to the larger domain of fan activity or fan art as they are termed in modern day parlance. This paper examines India Forums a digital fan community based in India for audiences and fans of Indian television soaps/serials and attempts to understand how fanfiction and fan activities within this forum acts as means of self-expression and enable its fans to develop a sense of agency that is indigenous to the space in itself. This community is predominantly populated by women or gender anonymous and function as a space that allow fans to construct their own voices, identities and thereby agency, which is most often restricted to that space alone. The fans though not subaltern, in the technical sense of the term, as they belong to the urban space, have access to a computer and can read, write and speak English although not fluently, are still urban middle-class women who have been spoken for and never spoken themselves; and India Forums enable these unheard voices to be heard. This reading analyses the dynamics of this agential space, the politics of this agency and argues that all fan writing within this space functions as life writing within a hypertextual metaconversational paradigm which is not necessarily reflective of traditional forms of life writing using notions of revisionist Freudian psychoanalysis and paradigms of life writing. Induced acyclic path decomposition in graphs
A decomposition of a graph G is a collection ? of graphs H1, H2,...,Hr of G such that every edge of G belongs to exactly one Hi. If each Hi is either an induced path in G, then ? is called an induced acyclic path decomposition of G and if each Hi is a (induced) cycle in G then ? is called a (induced) cycle decomposition of G. The minimum cardinality of an induced acyclic path decomposition of G is called the induced acyclic path decomposition number of G and is denoted by ?ia(G). Similarly the cyclic decomposition number ?c(G) is defined. In this paper we begin an investigation of these parameters. -
Coming out of the desi closet: disclosure of same-sex sexuality in metropolitan-India
Coming out of the closet is a psychosocial process that entails the disclosure of ones non- heteronormative sexual orientation to family, peers, and the wider publica phenomenon that is necessitated by the prevalence of societal heteronormativity. With the recent legal decriminalization of consensual same-sex sexual relationships in India, there is renewed interest in and emergent necessity to expand upon the existing academic discourse on the lives, rights, health and well-being of same-sex attracted individuals in India. The present study accumulates detailed narratives of disclosure of sexual orientation of five male and five female young-adults of same-sex sexuality from ages 18 to 25 in metropolitan cities of India. Thematic narrative analysis is used to gain insight into the factors of being in the closet, those underlying coming out of the closet, and the expectations from and impact of coming out to ones family. Five major themes have emergedthree restraint factors and two propulsion factors influencing sexual identity disclosure. Restraint factors are those that reduce the probability of coming out and these arean incessant pressure to conceal, perceived lack of stability and support, and anticipated disintegration of long-standing familial tradition. Propulsion factors act as catalysts of disclosure and these are target congeniality i.e. approachability of the target of disclosure, and parental validationwhich, when attained, enables the individual to come out more easily to others. The findings have been critically compared and contrasted with the existing body of literature in the domain, which sets the agenda for further inquiry. 2021 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. -
Dynamics of fractional model of biological pest control in tea plants with beddingtondeangelis functional response
In this study, we depicted the spread of pests in tea plants and their control by biological enemies in the frame of a fractional-order model, and its dynamics are surveyed in terms of boundedness, uniqueness, and the existence of the solutions. To reduce the harm to the tea plant, a harvesting term is introduced into the equation that estimates the growth of tea leaves. We analyzed various points of equilibrium of the projected model and derived the conditions for the stability of these equilibrium points. The complex nature is examined by changing the values of various parameters and fractional derivatives.
