Public policies, developmental strategies, and market forces often determine the nature and output of research in humanities and social sciences. Research in literatures, languages, and media needs articulationa process that reveals the significant interdisciplinary interventions that can be brought to the process of research and highlights the need for purpose-driven research as research rather than need-based research for research. This paper offers a critical overview of the role of research in universities in India, contemporary approaches to research at the national level, and the need to engage in interdisciplinary, collaborative, and action-based research, especially in humanities and social sciences departments in universities across India.
