By considering the five key system inputs (purchasing, receiving, storing, processing, distributing) that are indispensable in the supply chain, the company can first take action to stabilize the supply chain performance, and secondly to improve its effectiveness by reducing uncertainty in the supply chain and operational capabilities. This paper outlines the key drivers and uncertainties in the food supply chain and describes a structured supply chain audit that can be used to measure the effectiveness of the supply chain.
