In the present study soot, an environmental pollutant is converted to a value-added product by facile synthesis techniques. The physicochemical changes of the nanostructures are investigated by means of XRD, AFM, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XPS analyses SEM-EDS and TEM analysis. XRD analysis confirms the formation of few layer oxidized carbon nanostructures with smaller lateral dimensions. Raman spectra reveal the existence of graphenic layer with a fewer defect. AFM and SEM analyses reveal the formation of stacked tiny fragments of graphenic carbon lamellae. XPS and IR analyses confirm the incorporation of oxygen functionalities into the carbon backbone. 2018 by the authors.
