Although biotechnology has the potential to improve food security, sustainability, and agricultural production, its use frequently marginalizes smallholder farmers due to seed monopolies and stringent intellectual property laws. The chapter looks critically at how national patent laws, TRIPS, UPOV, and other international legal frameworks disproportionately favor agribusinesses at the expense of traditional knowledge, seed sovereignty, and the right to survive.
