Growth and microindentation analysis of pure and doped Sb2 Se3 crystals
Pure and doped antimony selenide (Sb2 Se3, Sb 2 Se2.8 Te0.2, and Sb2 Se 2.6 Te0.4) crystals have been grown from melt by the Bridgman Stockbarger method. X-ray powder diffraction analysis was carried out to determine the lattice parameters of the grown samples. The morphology of cleavage planes was observed using SEM. Energy dispersive analysis by X-rays (EDAX) was done to find out the chemical composition of the grown samples. Correlation of microhardness with other mechanical characteristics such as toughness, brittleness, and yield strength, has been investigated. The effects of Te doping on the mechanical behaviour and energy gap were also studied on the cleavage faces. Ti?tak. -
Alpha decay favoured isotopes of some superheavy nuclei: Spontaneous fission versus alpha decay
Spontaneous fission and alpha decay are the main decay modes for superheavy nuclei. The superheavy nuclei which have small alpha decay half-life compared to spontaneous fission half-life will survive fission and can be detected in the laboratory through alpha decay. We have studied the alpha decay half-life and spontaneous half-life of some superheavy elements in the atomic range Z = 100-130. Spontaneous fission half-lives of superheavy nuclei have been calculated using the phenomenological formula and the alpha decay half-lives using Viola-Seaborg-Sobiczewski formula (Sobiczewski et al. 1989), semi empirical relation of Brown (1992) and formula based on generalized liquid drop model proposed by Dasgupta-Schubert and Reyes (2007). The results are reported here. -
Photometric identification of objects from galaxy evolution explorer survey and sloan digital sky survey
We have used Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) observations to extract seven band photometric magnitudes for over 80 000 objects in the vicinity of the North Galactic Pole. Although these had been identified as stars by the SDSS pipeline, we found through fitting with model spectral energy distributions that most were, in fact, of extragalactic origin. Only about 9 per cent of these objects turned out to be mainsequence stars and about 11 per cent were white dwarfs and red giants collectively, while galaxies and quasars contributed to the remaining 80 per cent of the data. We have classified these objects into different spectral types (for the stars) and into different galactic types (for the galaxies). As part of our fitting procedure, we derive the distance and extinction to each object and the photometric redshift towards galaxies and quasars. This method easily allows for the addition of any number of observations to cover a more diverse range of wavelengths, as well as the addition of any number of model templates. The primary objective of this work is to eventually derive a three-dimensional extinction map of the Milky Way Galaxy. 2013 The Authors Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society. -

Bio-demineralization of Indian bituminous coal by Aspergillus niger and characterization of the products
The effect of demineralization on an Indian bituminous coal has been investigated by filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger. X-ray diffraction profile reveals the presence of inorganic components in the sample. Bio-Solubilization using Aspergillus niger significantly reduced the ash content in the coal sample (10.23wt% to 5.21wt %). Leaching process removed silicate and pyrite minerals where as aluminates were decreased considerably. The carbon content showed an increase of 19.94% where as the oxygen content decreased by 52.3%. During biosolubilization the fungus produced acids like gluconic acid, oxalic acid and citric acid along with oxalates which are responsible for the demineralization in coal by the formation of mineral salts. The broad diffraction peak at 2?~25.5 is due to the crystalline carbon in the sample which is mainly due to the typical (002) plane reflection of graphite. -
Monopsonistic exploitation in contract farming: Articulating a strategy for grower cooperation
Contract farming has been considered a new hope to instil dynamism in third world agriculture. However, there remains serious concern whether small peasants will be able to benefit from this system since buyers may often be a single large or at most, few large corporations, a typical case of monopsony. In this paper we question the basis of the fears that are often raised in the literature. A clear analytical approach to understanding the (economic) meaning of monopsony helps us articulate a strategy for grower cooperation that could effectively deal with monopsony power in contract farming systems. A compilation of interstellar column densities
We have collated absorption line data toward 3008 stars in order to create a unified database of interstellar column densities. These data have been taken from a number of different published sources and include many different species and ionizations. The preliminary results from our analysis show a tight relation [N(H)/E(B - V)= 6.1210 21] between N(H) and E(B - V). Similar plots have been obtained with many different species, and their correlations along with the correlation coefficients are presented. 2012 The American Astronomical Society. Novel heterocyclic thiosemicarbazones derivatives as colorimetric and "turn on" fluorescent sensors for fluoride anion sensing employing hydrogen bonding
(Chemical Equation Presented) Two novel heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone derivatives have been synthesized, and characterized, by means of spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Their chromophoric-fluorogenic response towards anions in competing solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was studied. The receptor shows selective recognition towards fluoride anion. The binding affinity of the receptors with fluoride anion was calculated using UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. -

Microwave assisted condensation of urea, thiourea and hydrazine hydrate with 1-chloro-2-formyl carbazoles in the presence of PTSA as catalyst yields 1,11H-pyrimido[4,5-a]carbazol-2-ones, 1,11H-pyrimido[4,5-a]carbazol-2-thiones and pyrazolo[3,4-a]carbazoles, respectively. The structures of the synthesized compounds have been confirmed on the basis of elemental analysis and spectral data. All the synthesized compounds have been evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Some of the synthesized compounds 2a-g and 3a-g exhibit significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The compounds 2a-g and 3a-g exhibit good antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus. Pyrazolo[3,4-a]carbazoles 4a-g register good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The compound 4e indicate maximum activity of 20 and 24 mm at 500 and 1000?g/disc, respectively, against Lipomyces lopofera fungi. -
Dislocation and microindentation analysis of vapour grown Bi 2Te3-xSex whiskers
The structural defects and microhardness of Bi2Te 3-xSex whiskers (x = 0, 0.2 and 0.4 at % Se) grown by physical vapour deposition (PVD) method have been investigated. Concentric pairs of dislocation loops were observed on the as-grown surfaces of short hexagonal prisms. A systematic study of dislocations in these crystals was carried out by chemical etching technique. The effects of Se doping, annealing and quenching on the mechanical properties have also been studied on the prism faces of Bi 2Te3-xSex whiskers. 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA. -
Accessing the role of critical success factors for successful ERP implementation at Indian SMEs: A statistical validation
Indian SMEs are also integral part of Indian economy; they also face numerous challenges in implementing technologies such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, including a lack of human, technical and financial resources to support such initiatives. Like many other technological advances, ERP systems were initially implemented mostly at large organisations even in India. Their relative absence from Indian SMEs has probably been the main reason for the research focus on large Indian enterprise. A model is developed with the help of quantitative survey-based method to identify and rank the 30 CSFs and, then a framework has been proposed in terms of recommendations for managing these CSFs. It was determined whether the survey instrument was complete and clear or not with the help of pre-pilot survey of 30 questionnaires responses from the Indian ERP consultants. As a result, the initial survey instrument was extensively revised. For the final data collection, new revised survey instruments were then given via a survey to 500+ Indian ERP consultants. K-shell fluorescence yields of barium and lanthanum
K-shell fluorescence yields for barium and lanthanum have been measured adopting simple 2? geometrical configuration and employing a weak 57Co radioactive source. A scintillation spectrometer with an NaI(Tl) detector of dimensions 44.5mm diameter0mm thickness was employed for the detection and measurement of radiation. The results obtained are in good agreement with the best-fitted values of Hubbell et al. (1994) and also with the other experimental values, indicating that our simple method can be extended to determine fluorescence parameters of high Z materials. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. -
Concurrent design, modeling and analysis of Microelectromechanical Systems products - Design for 'X' abilities
In this paper, we present the need for concurrent engineering in Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) device and product development. MEMS system is considered as six subsystems: micromachined element design subsystem, microelectronics circuit design subsystem, fabrication subsystem, packaging subsystem, materials subsystem and environment subsystem. Design for 'X' abilities is addressed by considering six subsystems/abilities. A concurrent model is developed using graph theory to show the interaction between subsystems. This work utilizes the advantages of the graph theoretic approach to consider all design aspects together in a single methodology with the help of a multinomial defined using matrix algebra. The design index developed using the proposed methodology shows the interaction among the subsystems and indicates whether the overall design is acceptable or not, by considering all the aspects related to micromachined element design, microelectronics circuit design, fabrication, packaging, materials, environment etc. A MEMS based RF power sensor is designed and the proposed methodology is explained. Simulated results of the RF MEMS power sensor are presented to validate the proposed methodology. A power sensor with VSWR of 1.08002 is reported. 2012 Bentham Science Publishers. -

Emotional intelligence and self esteem in cannabis abusers
This study was taken up to investigate emotional intelligence and self esteem in cannabis abusers. Cross sectional hospital based study, Study is based on a sample of 200 individuals. 100 Cannabis dependent, diagnosed based on DSM-IV TR was selected from two different hospitals in north India. 100 healthy matched subjects constituted the control group. Assessment was done using MINI, General Health Questionnaire, Indian Adaptation of Emotional Intelligence Scale and Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale. Significant differences were seen in Emotional Intelligence between the Cannabis dependent group and normal control group. The cannabis dependent groups scored significantly low on emotional intelligence in comparison with control group. Further, cannabis dependent group scored significantly lower on score of self esteem than the normal control group. Relationship between emotional intelligence and self esteem was found to be positively correlated. Our study suggests an association between low emotional intelligence, low self esteem and cannabis dependence and the prevention and treatment of cannabis dependence should lay focus on these factors. Preparation and characterisation of amorphous mesoporous aluminophosphate and metal aluminophosphate as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for transesterification reaction
Preparation, characterisation of pure aluminophosphate and aluminophosphate modified with different transition metals (V, Fe, Co Ni & Cu) and their catalytic activity in mono/dibenzyl substituted malonates synthesis are explained. The materials were prepared by the coprecipitation method in the absence of any structure-directing species and characterized for their composition, crystalline nature, total surface acidity, specific surface area pore diameter and pore volume by different techniques. Catalytic activity of the materials was investigated in transesterification of diethylmalonate with benzyl alcohol in liquid phase. Pure aluminophosphate resulted only in benzyl ethylmalonate whereas the incorporation of transition metals favored the formation of both benzyl ethylmalonate and dibenzylmalonate. Catalytic activity parallels the surface acidity and mesoporosity of the catalysts. The effect of the molar ratio of reactants, amount of catalyst, and reaction time on the conversion of diethyl malonate and transester yield has been studied. The highest activity of iron aluminophosphate is attributed to its mesoporous nature with uniform pore size distribution, higher surface acidity and surface area. Further, the scope and generality of iron aluminophosphate as a catalyst in the transesterification was studied using various aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic alcohols. The catalysts could be recycled by retaining most of its initial activity. 2011 Acadie des sciences. Published by Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
