Navigating Global Poverty in the midst of Rising Income Inequality: A Human Security Approach
From the dawn of civilization, poverty has been a predominant concern. Among them, the post-Second World War welfare state policies and economic development had a significant effect. Scientific and technological advancements and economic growth increased the GDP of almost all countries. However, it also widened the gap between the rich and the poor. This became evident with neoliberalism, privatization, and deregulation of the economy. The private assets increased enormously, losing the public sector's control over the economic interactions. As a result, income and wealth inequality increased rapidly. The World Inequality Report (2022) affirms the massive concentration of income and wealth in the hands of a few individuals. It adversely affects poverty alleviation strategies as poverty increases along with the rising income inequality. The World Bank (2024) affirms this precarious situation. From this perspective, this chapter examines the significance of the human security approach in addressing these human insecurities. 2026, IGI Global Scientific Publishing. All rights reserved. -

From Sensors to Action: Human-Centred Approaches to Communicating Earthquake and Flash-Flood Warnings
Multi-hazard early warning systems (MHEWS) are critical instruments for reducing disaster-related losses in an era marked by intensifying seismic and hydrometeorological risks. Despite advances in sensor technologies and predictive analytics, the effectiveness of early warning systems depends largely on how warnings are communicated, interpreted, and acted upon by diverse populations. This chapter examines the transition from sensor-based detection to actionable public response, focusing on emerging technologies and human-centred dissemination strategies for earthquake and flash-flood warnings. Integrating perspectives from disaster risk reduction, communication theory, and socio-technical systems, the chapter highlights gaps between technological capability and social uptake. It proposes an integrative framework that aligns real-time sensing, decision support, and inclusive communication to strengthen resilience across vulnerable communities. 2026 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing. -
The Transparency Paradox: Rebuilding Trust in AI Shopping Agents Through Explainability
AI shopping agent systems that search, compare, negotiate, and purchase on a consumers behalf promise to reduce friction in digital commerce, but they also intensify long-standing concerns about price discrimination, manipulative choice architecture, and opaque data use. This chapter argues that the resulting transparency paradox is not merely a communication problem: the same AI capabilities that enable personalization can also conceal and optimize exploitation. Building on research in trust, explainable artificial intelligence, humanAI interaction, and consumer protection, the chapter develops a socio-technical approach to rebuilding trust in agentic commerce. It synthesizes regulatory and standards developments and proposes design and governance mechanisms layered explanations, contestable outcomes, auditability, and choice-integrity controls intended to make AI shopping agents intelligible and accountable across jurisdictions and market contexts. Algorithms Against Manipulation: Safeguarding Consumer Rights in AI Shopping
The growing use of AI driven shopping agents has transformed digital commerce through enhanced personalization, while simultaneously enabling new forms of consumer manipulation, including dark patterns, algorithmic price discrimination, and subscription traps. This chapter critically examines whether existing regulatory frameworks particularly the GDPR, the EUAI Act, and Indias Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 are adequate to address persuasive algorithmic practices. It argues that prevailing consent based regulatory models are structurally ill-equipped to counter real-time and adaptive AI driven manipulation. Drawing on regulatory gaps and contemporary case studies, the chapter advances the normative proposal of classifying advanced AI shopping agents as information fiduciaries. Such a framework would impose enforceable duties of loyalty and care toward consumers, moving beyond notice-and-consent paradigms and strengthening consumer protection in AI-mediated digital marketplaces. Persons With Disabilities: A Critical Analysis of India's Right-Based Approach
Disability is a challenging issue across the globe, as almost 16% of the global population has some kind of disability. India, the most populous country in the world, also faces the severity of disability issues as 2.2% of its population belongs to that group. For a good period, Indian society considered disability as a curse in the context of karma theory. Accordingly, the disabled faced discrimination, marginalization, and social exclusion. Though the Constitution guaranteed equal rights, India's approach towards disabled was mostly based on charitable contributions for their rehabilitation rather than a rights-based approach. But in line with the paradigm shift in the global approach, the Indian perspective also changed, underlining the rights of the disabled. Many policies were designed to give them access to the mainstream of the society, but India lacks adequate strategies for implementing these policies. 2026 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
