Technology-based scalable business models: Dimensions and challenges of a new populist business model
Technology based scalable businesses (TSB) have made a significant impact on our lives. The landscape change driven by TSBs has forced many well-established brick-and-mortar businesses to relook at their business models. Despite the influential strides made by TSBs in altering the business landscape the business literature on them is scant. This chapter is a modest attempt to examine TSBs. Scalable businesses could be broadly described as those that can achieve a disproportionate increase in sales/revenue/profits compared to the costs incurred, primarily aided by technology. Google and Uber are examples of how new industries get created and how existing industry landscapes get changed because of technology. Interlinking of technology has offered hitherto unexperienced growth opportunities to such companies. However, the uniqueness of these businesses leaves much to be desired from conventional metrics in adequately explaining the performance of technology-based scalable businesses. 2024, IGI Global. Enhancing Patient Safety and Efficiency in Intravenous Therapy: A Comprehensive Analysis of Smart Infusion Monitoring Systems
Intravenous (IV) fluids, comprising vitamin-rich solutions, are administered to address patient electrolyte imbalances and dehydration through IV infusion therapy. Infusion pumps are integral for precise medication dosage delivery in this common medical procedure, generally posing low risks. These fluids are stored in polypropylene bags connected to patients through tubes. However, when the IV bag empties, the patients blood may flow backward into the IV tube due to higher blood pressure, known as diffusion, potentially leading to complications like air embolism-life-threatening if air enters the bloodstream through the IV line, obstructing blood flow to vital organs. Smart IV Bags emerged as a solution to mitigate such risks, eliminating the need for manual IV bag monitoring while preventing reverse blood flow. This research comprehensively assesses various IoT-enabled IV Bag monitoring systems, comparing their strengths, weaknesses, and unique features. Key evaluation criteria include component efficiency, real-world applicability, accuracy, latency, and technical specifications. The aim is to provide an objective evaluation of each Smart Intravenous Liquid Monitoring System to inform future developments in this field. A systematic approach ensures the selection of systems that best meet specific requirements in diverse healthcare environments. 2024 Scrivener Publishing LLC. -

Improvement in food preservation with nanozymes
To ensure safety, quality, and extended shelf life of perishable food products, food preservation is a critical aspect of food industries. Concerns regarding the potential health risks and loss of nutritional value of food because of traditional methods of preservation such as using chemical additives and high temperatures have set the need for finding alternative methods of preservation, for the betterment of health and the environment. Enzymes have the potential to kill microorganisms. Enzymes such as oxidases, peroxidases, hydrolases, catalases, and others have been extensively studied for their microbicidal activities. However, natural enzymes have shortfalls as they can be easily denatured and cannot be recycled. Nanozymes have gained the limelight in recent years as they can be applied in food industries to overcome the shortfalls of natural enzymes. They embody the highly beneficial properties of both enzymes and nanoparticles at the same time. Due to their enzyme-mimicking properties and versatile applications, nanozymes have become more popular in the last few years. Nanozymes have evolved as a promising alternative for food preservation and the detection of various contaminants in food. However, before the integration of nanozymes into the food industry, several factors such as their stability, biocompatibility, longevity, toxicity, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and regulatory approval need to be addressed. This chapter discusses the concept of nanozymes, its classification, and various applications in food industries specially designed for preservation of food products. 2024 Elsevier Inc. Corporate governance for sustainable development
Governance relates to structures and processes within an organisation to ensure greater accountability, a higher sense of responsiveness, transparency, and rule of law. Corporate governance balances the interests of a company's many stakeholders, such as shareholders, customers, vendors, financiers, the government, the community, and, very importantly, its own employees. While traditionally corporates had one clear agenda-i.e., make more profits and increase the shareholders' wealth-the 21st century saw the corporates turning a new leaf and looking at their growth from a societal perspective, specifically those relating to sustainable development like environmental protection. In the classical case of poor corporate governance, in the year 1984, the city Bhopal in India witnessed the most nightmarish experience, with the death of 16,000 people due to the leakage of a poisonous gas. 2024, IGI Global. Strengthening Supply Chain Management Through Technology
The removal of trade barriers with the advent of WTO and which led to LPG (liberalization, privatization, and globalization) across the universe increased choices of brands for consumers and even the complexity of products within organization and the expectations of consumers rising daily. Organizations look for better management of their supply chain from end to end, i.e., sourcing of raw materials from vendors to delivering finished products at the doorstep of consumers. This means businesses that used to be operations hubs within the company have moved into the epicenter of business innovation, and this process can not be done manually or by few people within organizations, thus the need to back up business innovations and product complexities through advanced technologies. Using sensors like RFID, CRM, AI, and ML, organizations today collect information at every checkpoint from status of raw materials flow to the location of finished goods. Supply chain management is the process of planning and implementing the operations of the sourcing of quality materials at competitive cost. This chapter explores strengthening supply chain management through technology. 2023 by IGI Global. -
Climate change and water insecurity: Who bears the brunt? (A case of Yelenahalli Village, Bengaluru)
Rapid urbanisation and neglect towards traditional water bodies have aggravated water security issues in isolated pockets. In the recent past, they have also manifested into natural disasters in major urban centres such as Bengaluru (Bangalore), Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. An examination of the problem is essential to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal on water security laid down by the United Nations in the context of climate change. This paper explores the various socio-economic costs of water scarcity through a case study of Yelenahalli village in Bengaluru. The study's preliminary results find that the encroachment of water bodies has led to a significant cost to households and local governments. Water scarcity is found to have a differential impact on poor and non-poor households in terms of access and the resultant water consumption due to the prevalence of price discrimination in the private water markets. The disparity in access to water is exacerbated despite the government's commencement of piped water supply due to worsening climate conditions and falling groundwater levels. The Author(s), 2023. Sustainable Consumption Practices of Rural India
It is said that real India lives in rural areas. Sustainability can be found very easily in traditions, practices, culture, ethics, sense of belongingness, camaraderie, mindful living of the villages, and small towns of India. They may lack the modern way of living and infrastructure, but their way of existence is such that they contribute toward making sustainable communities. This is specifically reflected in their behavior of consumption; obviously it is also related to their income but consumption in rural areas of India is way lower than those of urban areas, even if that is to be compared by keeping population size as the same. This chapter presents an informative analysis for the reasons and methods which rural population of India practices that results in sustainability. There are practices which are found wide and large such as sharing, self-sustenance because of farming, recycling, less influence of media, simpler living, work-life balance, valuing natural resources, inherent practices of protecting the environment, and pro-community sentimentalities that lead to sustainability. Attitude toward consumption is guided by the so-called spiritual way of living and having satisfaction with life. Happiness does not necessarily come by acquiring tangible resources but by having meaningful relationship, acquiring wisdom, and following indigenous way of living and transferring it to the next generation. This chapter presents a short report by having a take on economic indicators and traditional and cultural practices of rural India and hence present an explanation for how and why sustainable consumption practices are prevalent in such places.
