Edge/Fog Computing: An Overview and Insight into Research Directions
The rapid proliferation of data from applications including IoT, and on-demand access to data have increased dependency on cloud computing, which helps to minimize the overhead related to data storage and maintenance. Applications such as IoT, industrial control, etc. generate data which are highly time-critical in most scenarios. The cloud platform offers permanent storage of this massive amount of data but with comparatively less focus on time-sensitivity. Edge/fog computing are extensions of the cloud computing paradigm and require less response time for time-sensitive data. The edge/fog brings processing and storage closer to the edge of the network, thereby reducing network traffic, delay, and latency. It acts as an intermediate layer between the end devices and the cloud platform, for data collection, offloading, processing, and data management. This chapter addresses the need for fog computing, presents the design model for edge/fog computing, and discusses applications and open issues of implementation. Socio-economic Development and Value Creation Through Corporate Social Responsibility: A Case Study of Bosch India Foundation
In recent years, it is mandatory for profitable organizations in India to work toward Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Many thinkers in the industry have appreciated the move of the Indian Government by mandating profitable businesses to take responsibility for society by sharing certain portions of the profit made by these organizations. This study focuses on various initiatives taken by BOSCH India Foundation (BIF) for socio-economic development and value creation through its CSR activities. The primary data are collected by conducting interviews with the seniorlevel managers working in the CSR department of the Bidadi plant. The data are also collected by visiting the field of action, discussing with various stakeholders and observing their initiatives. The secondary data are collected from published sources and official records of the company. This case study shows that BOSCH India Foundation is focusing on the development of the villages in Bidadi. Their CSR initiatives focus on education, agriculture and livestock development, health and hygiene, environment, women empowerment, youth development and access to potable water. This study analyzes the economic and social impacts it has created in the society. Application of Nanomaterials in Fuel Cell and Photovoltaic System
The emerging appliances and components of nanotechnology facilitate pioneering and cost-efficient strategies to meet the ever-growing energy demands. Child friendly schools: Challenges and issues in creating a positive and protective school environment
Schools are considered to be one of the safest places where children are seen on a daily basis and are under the supervision of teachers who are trained and equipped caregivers. Children are victims of all forms of abuse, punishment, neglect, discrimination, and ill-treatment within the school setting. Though there are various policies and programmes at international and national levels, addressing child protection has been a serious challenge for every community. Children need to be protected and any acts that hamper their well-being and safety need to be curbed. The objective of this chapter is to critically evaluate school-based child-protection programmes and suggest a model of child protection through positive schooling. Positive schooling is an approach to create a healthier and safer school environment. Positive schooling emphasises inclusiveness, strength-based education, developing character strengths, creating least restrictive environments, and fostering well-being among the school community, including students and teachers. It aims at creating a positive culture where every learner gets equal opportunities to learn and develop. It gives value to overall well-being of the individual and happiness within the learning environment. It promotes positive teaching strategies without the use of punishment and pressure. The positive culture within the school environment would promote peer support and collaboration, preventing bullying and abuse. Learners and facilitators would respect and support each other, focusing on strengths rather than weakness, which would, in turn, create an inclusive environment accommodating everyone. The chapter also highlights the need for: trained professionals, like counsellors, in school settings; stronger school-based polices; and the need for collaboration among school administrators, counsellors, teachers, and parents. Polyoxometalates and redox-active molecular clusters for supercapacitors
Hybrid electric vehicles and portable electronic devices become inevitable part of our daily life and it is necessary to develop efficient energy storage devices to supply them power. Supercapacitors (SCs) are electrochemical energy storage devices with high power densities. The electrochemical performances of a SC depend mainly on the electrode-active material used in it. An efficient electrode-active material should have qualities such as large surface area, porous structure, uniform pore distribution, good chemical and electrochemical stabilities, and good mechanical strength, to name a few. Mesoporous electrode architecture is highly preferred to obtain maximum electrolyte-ion accessibility that can boost the electrochemical performance of the SC electrode. The various electrode-active materials developed to date are transition metal oxides, electronically conducting polymers, carbon nanomaterials, etc. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are comparatively novel electrode candidates that possess excellent structural stability during the reversible redox reactions. A unique characteristic such as higher oxidation state possessed by POMs makes them an ideal platform to accept and release electrons during the electrochemical charge storage. POMs are considered to be a polyatomic anion, which hold early transition metals like Mo, V, W, etc., and are linked to an oxygen atom in a three-dimensional cluster. The cluster formation of POMs enables higher stability and easy to prepare composites with other materials such as carbon nanomaterial, electronically conducting polymers, etc. The preparation of hybrid electrode architectures by anchoring of POMs helps in producing a large number of electroactive sites for the enhanced electrochemical reactions to occur. Translation of supercapacitor technology from laboratory scale to commercialization
This overview chapter discusses the critical process of transforming supercapacitor technology from the laboratory scale to successful commercialization. Supercapacitors possess remarkable energy storage capacity and fast discharge cycles, making them highly promising for diverse applications, including electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. However, transitioning from small-scale prototyping to mass production presents significant challenges, such as scalability, cost-effectiveness, and maintaining consistent performance. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the main obstacles in the commercialization process and propose strategies and solutions to expedite the market introduction of supercapacitors. By identifying and addressing these hurdles, this research aims to facilitate the rapid and efficient transition of supercapacitor technology into commercial applications. To achieve this goal, the present chapter examines several aspects, including increasing production output, optimizing manufacturing processes, and reducing costs while upholding performance standards. Additionally, this chapter explores methods to ensure the scalability and reliability of supercapacitors, enabling seamless integration into existing energy storage systems. By bridging the gap between laboratory innovation and large-scale production, this study seeks to make a significant contribution to the realization of efficient and sustainable energy storage technologies across various industries. Unraveling the Intangibles: Influence of AI and Employee Valuation on Corporate Sustainability
This study investigates the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and human capital on a firm's sustainability based on the selected thirty companies in the Indian Information Technology (IT) Sector. It also involves an insight into the usage of AI tools for the same. This study takes three independent variables, namelySalaries and wages (SW), Provident Fund (PF), and Gratuity and superannuation (GS), which are dependent on the Return On Capital Employed (ROCE). Furthermore, the study evaluates these variables through multiple regression analysis to establish the link between them and determine how human capital affects a firm's profitability. Towards a culturally-informed counselling and psychotherapy
Indigenizing health psychological practices in the background of cultural diversity in India needs to address the tremendous resources of healing practices embedded in the Indian traditions. Looking for cultural imprints in mental health has received attention among academicians and researchers in the last two decades significantly. Teaching, training and practice of counseling and psychotherapy has also greatly been benefitted and progressed eventually. Several academic and research initiatives have been taken to build a culturally informed counseling and psychotherapy in India. There is need to internalize cultural differences and incorporating them consciously in the training and practice of therapy. Antifouling Nanoparticle Coatings for Post-Harvest Food Preservation
The reports of the World Food Preservation Center exhibit that the entire number of inhabitants in the globe will reach 9.6 billion by the year 2050. With the increasing population, there is a growing pressure on agricultural produce which is further amplified by the losses between harvest and retail (~17%) and other wastages (~17%). Globally, this is a major concern, and thus, there is no surprise to look into current research developments in food preservation. This chapter provides comprehensive reports on the recent trends in various nanoparticle coatings for the aforementioned application. Silicon dioxide (SiO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and zinc oxide (ZnO) nano regime coatings on silicon substrate and polymer substrates have been discussed for antifouling applications. This chapter is categorized as follows: Section I delivers the introduction about the significance of food preservation in reference to the reported statistics. In section II, the discussion starts with the materials and methods for post-harvest food saving. Major recent advances in terms of materials or methods to increase the shelf life of cuisine are portrayed in the same section II. Section III entails the appropriate computational methods to envision the interaction of food residuals with coated nanolayers through sensing. Tag indicator: a new predictive tool for stock trading
In this paper, TAGan indicator for stock market prediction in which volume-based means for measuring potential trading and investing decision-making is introduced. This task has been in correlation of the changes in the volume with the changes in the actual trade volume. Using this, a concise trading strategy is formulated. Hoping to outperform the market and analyze the results by back testing across intraday, price data for the last 1 year, 2019, is performed. It was discovered that about 48.9% of the time, the volume-based trading strategy outperformed and the returns from market are also healthy enough to support the claim. Statistical methods like linear regression, mean square error in prediction and stochastic gradient descent are applied. Furthermore, while the scope of the study was limited to a few stocks in Nifty in order to mitigate selection bias, nonetheless, we hypothesize that numerous other assets that similarly possess a predictable correlation to volumes based on daily high and low are likely to exist. Implementation of integer factorization algorithm with pisano period
The problem of factorization of large integers into the prime factors has always been of mathematical interest for centuries. In this paper, starting with a historical overview of integer factorization algorithms, the study is extended to some recent developments in the prime factorization with Pisano period. To reduce the computational complexity of Fibonacci number modulo operation, the fast Fibonacci modulo algorithm has been used. To find the Pisano periods of large integers, a stochastic algorithm is adopted. The Pisano period factorization method has been proved slightly better than the recently developed algorithms such as quadratic sieve method and the elliptic curve method. The Truncated Modified Lindley Generated Family of Distributions
In this paper, two contributions to the modified Lindley distribution are provided. First, we bend the truncation scheme to this model to introduce a new distribution on the interval (0, 1). Theory and practice are provided. In particular, we show that it can be an interesting alternative to the analogous truncated exponential and Lindley distributions. Then, we employ this truncated distribution to develop a new generalized family of distributions. Spiritual Dispositional Coping and Health Hardiness on Stress and Related Illnesses: Aftermath COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an array of challenges that have taken a significant toll on psychological well-being and health. Public fear-mongering, hopelessness, and uncertainty have contributed to many negative emotions during the pandemic. The psychological ramifications of these emotions include stress, anxiety, and depression. The extreme stress that people experienced caused mental conditions like post-pandemic stress disorder. Literature suggests there is also an increased susceptibility to stress-related chronic illness. Another major concern post-coronavirus contraction is long COVID (post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, or PASC), which further leads to complications impacting physical, cognitive, and mental health dimensions and multiple organ system syndromes. As a result of this predicament, there is an increased reliance on various complementary and alternative approaches and interventions for engaging in health-promoting behaviours. The chapter focuses on how spiritual dispositional coping and health hardiness can be used as health protective measures.
