Properties and Occurrence Rates for Kepler Exoplanet Candidates as a Function of Host Star Metallicity from the DR25 Catalog
Correlations between the occurrence rate of exoplanets and their host star properties provide important clues about the planet formation process. We studied the dependence of the observed properties of exoplanets (radius, mass, and orbital period) as a function of their host star metallicity. We analyzed the planetary radii and orbital periods of over 2800 Kepler candidates from the latest Kepler data release, DR25 (Q1-Q17), with revised planetary radii based on Gaia DR2 as a function of host star metallicity (from the Q1-Q17 (DR25) stellar and planet catalog). With a much larger sample and improved radius measurements, we are able to reconfirm previous results in the literature. We show that the average metallicity of the host star increases as the radius of the planet increases. We demonstrate this by first calculating the average host star metallicity for different radius bins and then supplementing these results by calculating the occurrence rate as a function of planetary radius and host star metallicity. We find a similar trend between host star metallicity and planet mass: the average host star metallicity increases with increasing planet mass. This trend, however, reverses for masses >4.0 M J: host star metallicity drops with increasing planetary mass. We further examined the correlation between the host star metallicity and the orbital period of the planet. We find that for planets with orbital periods less than 10 days, the average metallicity of the host star is higher than that for planets with periods greater than 10 days. 2018. Properties of alkali-activated concrete (AAC) incorporating demolished building waste (DBW) as aggregates
This study was undertaken to evaluate the potential of demolished building waste (DBW) as aggregates in alkali-activated concrete (AAC). A recent road-widening activity led to the demolition of commercial buildings along National Highway 275, Bangalore-Bantwal, India. DBW was collected from these sites and processed manually at the laboratory facility of CHRIST (Deemed to be University). Processing of DBW was done to obtain both waste coarse and fine aggregates from demolished concrete and brick waste units, respectively. AAC was synthesized by fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, along with waste aggregate replacement rates of 0, 25, 50, and 75% by weight of natural aggregates. Fresh and hardened properties of developed concrete mixtures were experimentally determined. Results of the study indicate that 28-day compressive strength of 30.4 and 21 MPa was obtained for AAC with 25 and 50% DBW aggregates, which was 8.6 and 36.9% lower than control mix, respectively. Further, there was an increase in the water absorption and a reduction to acid resistance for all the AAC mixes with DBW aggregates. Based on the results obtained, it was observed that AAC with 25 and 50% DBW aggregates find great potential in civil engineering applications. 2021 The Author(s). Properties of high strength concrete with reduced amount of Portland cement a case study
In the last 15years Bangalore city has systematically modernized its concrete production process with the help of ready-mix concrete (RMC) facility. However, one of the present requirements of these facilities is to lower its carbon footprint by reducing consumption of Portland cement in the concrete production process. Further, the demand for high-strength concrete (HSC) has increased due to construction of high-rise buildings and other major infrastructure projects in the urban areas of the city. Therefore, this study presents the experimental test results of HSC mixes proportioned with reduced consumption of Portland cement. Four types of concrete mixes with 50% of Portland cement replaced by ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) were considered. Additionally, two control mixes without GGBS replacement were also tested. Fresh, hardened, and durability properties of all the mixes were experimental determined and presented. The results showed that concrete mixes proportioned with 50% GGBS obtained a maximum 28-day compressive strength of 77 MPa. Further, all the mixes with GGBS exhibited superior durability properties when compared to control mixes. Thus, concrete mixes with 50% GGBS replaced for Portland cement are favourable for producing HSC at RMC facilities at Bangalore city. 2021 The Author(s). Prospective memory in early and established psychosis: An Indian perspective
Individuals affected by psychosis often have deficits in several neurocognitive functions. Prospective memory (PM), the ability to remember to do things, is crucial for activities of daily living, social and occupational functioning, but very few studies have attempted to examine this domain of functioning in people with psychosis, particularly in India. A total of 71 patients with psychosis, (both early and established psychosis), and 140 age, gender and education-matched healthy controls were assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale, and Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination. PM was assessed using the Cambridge Prospective Memory Test and the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ). Group differences were evaluated using MannWhitney U-tests. Significantly greater cognitive deficits, higher anxiety and depression were evident in the psychosis group compared with controls. The psychosis group performed significantly poorer on both time- and event-based tests in CAMPROMPT than controls. These differences remained when controlling for age, education, general cognitive functioning and mood. The subjective measure of PM (PRMQ) did not differentiate the two groups. The PM performance of early and established psychosis patients was similar. Comparisons with cross-cultural data (PRMQ UK norms and CAMPROMPT and PRMQ Chinese data) revealed important differences in PM performance. Individuals with psychosis have significant deficits in both time- and event-based PM. CAMPROMPT emerged as a more sensitive PM measure compared with PRMQ. Results from cross-cultural comparisons underscore the need for cultural contextualization of assessments. 2023 The British Psychological Society. -

Protection of Artificial Intelligence Autonomously Generated Works under the Copyright Act, 1957-An Analytical Study
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not new anymore; it has become a new normal. In the present 3A era (Advanced, automated and autonomous), the Next Rembrandt paintings, Shimons lyrics and songs and Bot Dylans Irish folk songs are the works generated by the AI without any considerable human contribution. In the US, the Copyright Act, 1976 does not protect the works generated independently by the AI without human intervention and thus dropping such works in the public domain immediately after their creation. However, in the UK, the Copyright, Patents and the Designs Act, 1988 under Section 9 (3) attributes copyright to the person by whom the arrangements necessary for the creation of the work are undertaken in case of AI generated works. India has taken a giant leap by considering AI as the joint author along with the human responsible for the creation of work. However, there is not much comprehensive literature available that focuses on the impact of AI being considered as a joint author. This paper aims to create a concrete foundation by emphasising such impact under the Copyright Act, 1957. Furthermore, the paper considers the stance of the US, UK and Australia in protecting AI generated works to suggest measures to the current copyright regime in India. 2023, National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research. Protection of intellectual property and human rights during health emergencies: an assessment of the patent waiver proposal
Purpose: Several countries, such as South Africa and India, believe that intellectual property rights (IPRs), including patents, impede the efficient increase in vaccine production to inoculate the global population as they scramble to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Their proposal at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to waive these pharmaceutical patents has been met with resistance from a few developed countries, who believe that the abrogation of IPRs is unnecessary, even during a pandemic. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact of a potential waiver of medical patents at the WTO versus the status quo of IPR laws in the global economy. Design/methodology/approach: This study examines key arguments from economic and moral standpoints regarding the provisions of the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement and other related international agreements and their validity based on the premise of the internalisation of positive externalities posed by vaccines. Findings: The effectiveness of the TRIPS agreement in securing medical access is weak on account of the ability of profit-making multinationals to secure IP rights and on account of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a multilateral agreement that supports patent evergreening and a period of protection on test data which challenges the access to medicines and the fundamental human right to health. Protoplanetary disks around young stellar and substellar objects in the ? Orionis cluster
Understanding the evolution and dissipation of protoplanetary disks are crucial in star and planet formation studies. We report the protoplanetary disk population in the nearby young ? Orionis cluster (d? 408 pc; age ? 1.8 Myr) and analyse the disk properties, such as dependence on stellar mass and disk evolution. We utilize the comprehensive census of 170 spectroscopic members of the region refined using astrometry from Gaia DR3 for a wide mass range of ? 190.004 M? . Using the near-infrared (2MASS) and mid-infrared (WISE) photometries, we classify the sources based on the spectral index, into class I, class II, flat spectrum and class III young stellar objects. The frequency of sources hosting a disk with stellar mass <2 M? in this region is 41 7 %, which is consistent with the disk fraction estimated in previous studies. We see that there is no significant dependence of disk fraction on stellar mass among T Tauri stars (<2 M?), but we propose rapid disk depletion around higher mass stars (>2 M?). Furthermore, we found the lowest mass of a disk-bearing object to be ? 20 MJup and the pronounced disk-fraction among the brown dwarf population hints at the formation scenario that brown dwarfs form similar to low-mass stars. 2023, Indian Academy of Sciences. -
Provably secure quantum key distribution By applying quantum gate
The need for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is strengthening due to its inalienable principles of quantum mechanics. QKD commences when sender transforms bits into qubits or quantum states by applying photon polarization and sends to the receiver. The qubits are altered when measured in incorrect polarization and cannot be reproduced according to quantum mechanics principles. BB84 protocol is the primary QKD protocol announced in 1984. This paper introduces a new regime of secure QKD using Hadamard quantum gate named as PVK16 QKD protocol. Applying quantum gate to QKD makes tangle to the eavesdroppers to measure the qubits. For a given length of key, it is shown that the error rate is negligible. Also, the authentication procedure using digital certificates prior to QKD is being performed which confers assurance that the communicating entities are legitimate users. Pseudocapacitive electrode performance of zinc oxide decorated reduced graphene oxide/poly(1,8-diaminonaphthalene) composite
Development of Reduced graphene oxide/Zinc oxide/poly(1,8-diaminonaphthalene) (rGO/ZnO/PDAN) composite and its supercapacitor performance has been evaluated. Functional, crystal and morphological structures along with the thermal stability of the polymer-impregnated composite were studied using analyses such as FTIR, powder XRD, Raman, SEM and TGA techniques. The SEM images showcased the random decoration of irregularly shaped ZnO in between the wrinkled rGO sheets and the PDAN. The defective structure of the hybrid composite contributes capacitive features through electron transfer kinetics. The specific capacitance value for the rGO/ZnO/PDAN composite modified NF electrode in 3 M KOH was found to be 239 F/g at the current density of 0.5 A/g. The capacitance retained is 92 % after 5000 cycles at 5 A/g current density. A solid-state symmetrical supercapacitor device based on a novel rGO/ZnO/PDAN composite was successfully developed, which exhibits the specific capacity (40 at 0.6 A/g), energy density (12.66 Wh/kg) and power density (993 W/kg). The synergistic combination of surface-active nitrogen heteroatoms, extended conjugation and ZnO particles decorated over rGO sheets of rGO/ZnO/PDAN ternary hybrid composite displayed significant structural stability and electrochemical pseudocapacitive performances. 2023 Elsevier Ltd -
Psidium guajava-mediated green synthesis of Fe-doped ZnO and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles: a comprehensive study on characterization and biological applications
The efficacy of nanoparticles (NPs) in healthcare applications hinges on their biocidal activity and biocompatibility. This research is dedicated to green-synthesized NPs with potent biocidal properties, aiming for high inhibition rates in bacterial infections and offering a multifunctional application, including potential use in anticancer therapy, in comparison to traditional antibiotics. The present study focuses on synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs), including iron-doped ZnO (GZF) and cobalt-doped ZnO (GZC), using the green co-precipitation method involving Psidium guajava (P. guajava) leaf extract. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized NPs were analyzed using various characterization techniques. The antibacterial and anticancer activity depends on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), particle size, surface area, oxygen vacancy, Zn2+ release, and diffusion ability. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized NPs was tested against various Gram-positive (Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae), Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) and Gram-negative (Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) bacterial strains. The zone of inhibition showed higher activity of GZC (1820mm) compared to GZF (1619mm) and GZO (1115mm) NPs. Moreover, anticancer studies against blood cancer cell line (MOLT-4) showed half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 11.3?g/mL for GZC compared to GZF and GZO NPs with 12.1?g/mL and 12.5?g/mL, respectively. Cytotoxicity assessments carried out on the fibroblast L929 cell line indicated that GZO, GZF, and GZC NPs demonstrated cell viabilities of 85.43%, 86.66%, and 88.14%, respectively. Thus, green-synthesized GZC NPs hold promise as multifunctional agents in the biomedical sector. Psychological adjustment, choice of game genre and living arrangements among adolescents with and without IGD
In India, the prevalence of internet gaming disorders ranges from 8 to 9%. Adolescents are more likely to become addicted to online games. This study compares teenage gamers with and without Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) in terms of game genre, psychosocial adjustment, and living conditions with a sample of 80 in each group. The results demonstrate that adolescents with this disorder had significantly higher scores for depression, anxiety, and psychosocial deterioration than adolescents without gaming disorder. Even though the prevalence of males is high, both genders do not significantly differ from one another in psychological adjustment. Another finding is that adolescents with gaming disorders play multiplayer online role-play games and Battle Royal games more frequently than average players. The prevalence of this disorder is also influenced by living conditions; teenagers who stay in hostels or pay guest rooms are more likely to develop a gaming addiction. Psychological capital and innovative work behaviour: The role of mastery orientation and creative self-efficacy
Continuous innovation is what helps companies survive the highly discontinuous competition. Securing innovative work behaviour from employees has drawn the attention of businesses and researchers alike. The current work draws on broaden-and-build theory and goal orientation theory to propose how an individual's psychological capital, which is malleable, helps in achieving innovative work behaviour from employees. The study has been conducted in the context of three-star hotels located in and around New Delhi, the capital of India. The data was collected using standard scales from a dyad of 229 employees and their managers. The present study enriches the innovative work behavior literature by combining different perspectives in a coherent framework and demonstrates the partially mediated positive relationship of psychological capital and innovative work behavior via mastery orientation. Psychological Components for Marital Distress and Divorce in Newlywed Indian Couples
The personal and family consequences of the ever-increasing ratio of divorce have focused global attention on formulating tactics to avert marital breakdown. However, the increase in the rate of divorce cases indicates that its core reasons have not yet been tackled. The most recurrently asked question in the literature around divorce is this: Why do couples shatter so soon, even after marrying with high prospects? This study endeavors to find answers for this question from a family psychological perspective. Using a basic interpretative qualitative method and phenomenological research paradigm, this study has provided very personal experiences of 20 newlywed divorced participants and also their sole vision on crucial key psychological factors for marital distress and divorce. One superordinate theme derived in the analysis involves intrapsychic resistance to accommodate life cycle transitions. Psychological distress among college students of coastal district of Karnataka: A community-based cross-sectional survey
Background: Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) are frequent among adolescents and early adults. National Mental Health Survey of India 20152016 shows alarming results, especially for depression. This study explored the prevalence of psychological distress among college students. Additionally, the relationship between gender, living arrangement with psychological distress in various educational streams were explored. Materials and Methods: Through a cross-sectional community-based survey a total of 4839 college going students of various educational streams in Mangalore, Karnataka were assessed for psychological distress with Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Results: Participants had median age of 19 (range = 9) years and the majority (59.5%) were females. The median SRQ score was 4 (range 20) and about 28.5% of students were found to be psychologically stressed. The suicidal ideation was reported by 13.6% of the students. Engineering and Arts/science/commerce students had significantly higher psychological distress scores as compared to health and allied sciences (k = 47.7; p < 0.001) and those who were staying with families (U = 2,687,648.5; p = 0.004) reported higher levels of psychological distress in comparison to those who were staying away from their families. Conclusion: Prevalence of psychological distress was high among students, especially non-medical students, students who were staying with their families, and those who were younger in age. A significant proportion of students had suicidal ideation, which needs early mental health interventions at the college level. 2018 -
Psychological distress among doctoral scholars: Its association with perseverance and passion
Background: the study examined psychological distress and its association with perseverance and passion for long term goals among 400 Ph.D. scholars from Pondicherry University. MethODs: the sample collected through multi-stage convenience sampling technique was assessed using a structured Questionnaire, Depression, anxiety and stress scale (Dass-21), Grit scale and Flourishing scale. resULts: the results showed that 7.5% and 4.5% had severe and extremely severe depression, 12.5% and 20% had severe and extremely severe anxiety, and 5% and 1.5% had severe and extremely severe stress. the data was collected from one indian University and analyzed based the information gathered through self-report inventory. cONcLUsiONs: congenial family environment, good relationship with parents and friends were observed to be positive factors for psychological well-being. there is an urgent need to extend mental health support services to the PhD scholars especially for those who were suffering from severe and extremely severe psychological distress. 2020 Edizioni Minerva Medica Online version at http://www.minervamedica.it -
Psychological distress and quality of community life among migratory construction workers in India
Objectives: The objectives of this study are to elicit sociodemographic details, assess the level of psychological distress, and measure the quality of community life (QoCL) of migratory construction workers. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional research design and survey method of sampling was followed. The semi-structured interview schedule, self-reporting questionnaire, and QoCL scale were used as measures for the study. Results: Out of 75 respondents, 37 (49.3%) did not have formal education, 38 (50.7%) have migrated for less than a month duration, 33 (44.0%) respondents migrated with their families. The mean age of respondents was 32.03 9.82 years. About 48 (64.0%) were identified as potential respondents for psychosocial care and female respondents (M = 12.90 4.03, t = ?3.03, P < 0.003) have higher distress than males (M = 9.50 4.56, t = ?3.03, P < 0.003) ones. Overall, QoCL indicated a below moderate (59.08 8.31) level. Conclusion: The distress was high and QoCL indicated a below moderate level. Intersectoral and community mental health services were required to enhance QoCL and reduce distress among migratory construction workers. 2023 Published by Scientific Scholar on behalf of Journal of Neurosciences in Rural Practice.
