Plasmonic Nanocomposite for Visible Light-Modulated Bimorph-Actuator
Soft actuators have great potential applications in sophisticated movement and sensitive devices due to their flexible nature, good interaction, and precise control. However, existing carbon-based optical actuators are limited in their response under visible light irradiation. The limited visible light absorbance of the carbon nanostructure brought the metallic nanoparticle into the soft actuators that can absorb visible light. This study introduces a new type of plasmonic photothermal-bimorph actuator, using graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and silver nanorods (Ag NRs) to overcome the limitations of traditional optical actuators. The bimorph film is actuated by visible and near-infrared light stimuli with various power densities showing reversible deformation behavior. The actuator shows significant bending associated with a ?50 change in bending angle under visible light irradiation with a response time of ?5 1 sec. Furthermore, a smart photo-controlled non-contact switch is fabricated based on photo-thermal conversion properties, demonstrating perfect integration of plasmonic bimorph actuators. The density functional theory based molecular dynamics calculations provide an additional understanding of the bending of actuators under external stimulus. Using illustrative demonstrations of actuators, these results hint at a method for generating multipurpose visible light-based soft robots, supporting a new approach to developing an optical locking system. 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH. -
Designing an artificial intelligence-enabled large language model for financial decisions
Purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI) has profoundly reshaped financial decision-making, introducing a paradigm shift in how institutions and individuals navigate the complex finance landscape. The study evaluates the significant impact of integrating advanced AI and large language models (LLMs) in financial decision analytics. Design/methodology/approach: The study offers FinSageNet, a novel framework designed and tested to harness the potential of LLMs in financial decisions. The framework excels in handling and analyzing large volumes of numerical and textual data through advanced data mining techniques. Findings: FinSageNet demonstrates exceptional text summarization capabilities, outperforming models like FLAN and GPT-3.5 in Rouge score metrics. The proposed model has shown more accuracy than generic models. Originality/value: The study emphasizes the significance of consistently updating models and adopting a comprehensive approach to integrating AI into financial decisions. Voluntary cybersecurity risk disclosures and firms characteristics: the moderating role of the knowledge-intensive industry
Purpose: This study examines voluntary cybersecurity risk disclosures (VCRD) by listed Indian companies. It also investigates how it relates to firm-specific characteristics such as size, leverage, profitability, liquidity, beta, market growth and industry. Design/methodology/approach: The extent of VCRD was measured by assessing the cumulative occurrence of cybersecurity risk keywords in the annual report of 100 listed Indian non-financial companies. Keyword extraction and occurrence counts were performed using Python software. A multiple regression analysis was applied to predict the characteristics of VCRD. Findings: The results showed that the theoretical frameworks underpinned by agency and signalling theories continued to provide a valid explanation of VCRD by Indian companies. Specifically, the findings emphasized the importance of firm size, leverage, and beta as significant VCRD determinants. Additionally, the study found that knowledge-intensive industries had a favourable impact on the extent of VCRD. Research limitations/implications: This study is relevant because it informs company management, regulators and investors about the nature and characteristics of companies that satisfy stakeholder demands to prevent cyber breaches. Originality/value: Understanding disclosure characteristics is crucial from policy and regulatory perspectives. Studies on cybersecurity disclosures are related to developed economies such as the United States of America and Canada. Unveiling virtual interactive marketplaces: Shopping motivations in the Metaverse through the lens of uses and gratifications theory
The emergence of Metaverse has transformed the consumer shopping experience. This novel e-commerce platform offers a fresh approach to shopping, with Generation Z primarily exploring this innovative technology. Our research examines shopping within the Metaverse by developing a model based on the Uses and Gratifications Theory and Metaverse-related factors. A total of 1220 Gen Z consumers were surveyed, and data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Further, analysis of collected data was done using PLS-SEM. The results reveal that information seeking, perceived enjoyment, escapism, social interaction, sense of immersion, and personalization influence the shopping intention in the Metaverse, and perceived risk negatively influences the shopping intention of consumers. Further, shopping intention influences the potential use of Metaverse for shopping, and this relationship is moderated by technological innovativeness. This investigation into the adoption of the Metaverse for retail purposes augments the current Metaverse research and enhances the uses and gratifications theory within the Metaverse domain. Recent developments in melamine detection: Applications of gold and silver nanostructures in colorimetric and fluorometric assays
The purity of milk, traditionally regarded as a symbol of health and nourishment, has been undermined by the alarming issue of melamine (MLM) adulteration. This nitrogen-rich compound is illicitly introduced to falsely enhance protein content, posing significant health risks. Traditional detection methods are often labor-intensive, time-consuming, or require expensive equipment. In response, researchers have developed colorimetric detection techniques to efficiently screen milk for MLM contamination. These methods are particularly promising due to their ease of preparation, rapid detection, high sensitivity, and capability for naked-eye detection. Furthermore, the unique optical properties of advanced nanomaterials have facilitated fluorometric detection, wherein the presence of contaminants induces detectable changes in fluorescence intensity or wavelength. This study offers an in-depth review of recent advancements in colorimetric and fluorometric probes based on silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanostructures, exploring their application in food analysis. It delves into the underlying sensing mechanisms of these probes, showcasing their efficacy in detecting food contaminants. Despite the numerous advantages of Ag and Au nanostructure-based probes, challenges remain, particularly in addressing the complexity of food matrices, achieving simultaneous detection of multiple analytes, and mitigating interference from testing conditions. Additionally, this review highlights the emergence of immunoassay-based sensors, noting that many commercially available MLM testing kits utilize ELISA and LFIA platforms. Bougainvillea glabra-mediated synthesis of Zr?O and chitosan-coated zirconium oxide nanoparticles: Multifunctional antibacterial and anticancer agents with enhanced biocompatibility
The effectiveness and safety of nanomaterials (NMs) are essential for their use in healthcare. This study focuses on creating NPs with multifunctional antibacterial and anticancer properties to combat bacterial infections and cancer disease more effectively than traditional antibiotics. This study investigates the synthesis of Zr3O and chitosan (ch) coated zirconium oxide nanoparticles (chZrO NPs) using Bougainvillea glabra (B. glabra) plant extract through a green, one-pot precipitation method. The synthesized NPs were analyzed using various techniques. Their antibacterial properties are attributed to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), influenced by their size, large surface area, oxygen vacancies, ion release, and diffusion capabilities. The chZrO NPs showed superior antibacterial activity compared to Zr3O and chitosan alone, with effective inhibition against both Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus and B. subtilis) and Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli and P. aeruginosa). Additionally, anticancer studies of chZrO NPs demonstrated significant activity against colon cancer HCT116 cells with C50 values of 4.98 ?g/mL compared to chitosan and Zr3O with 9.62, 6.69 ?g/mL, while biocompatibility tests on L929 cells confirmed their safety showing 93 % cell viability compared to ch and Zr3O. These findings suggest that chZrO NPs are promising candidates for future use in clinical and healthcare applications. 2025 Elsevier B.V. -
Exploring various nanomaterials in enhancing the performance of chiral nematic liquid crystal for blue phase display
This study aims to develop composite liquid crystal (LC) materials for energy-efficient blue phase (BP) display applications with enhanced luminescent and dielectric properties. Chiral nematic liquid crystal (CNLC) was systematically doped with nanomaterials, including nickel zinc ferrite (NZFO), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), gold nanoparticles (GNPs), and strontium titanate (SrTiO3). Optimal doping concentrations (0.05 wt% for NZFO and SWCNT; 0.1 wt% for GNPs) enhanced photoluminescence, while SrTiO3 served as a luminescence quencher. Dielectric studies revealed a substantial reduction in the Freedericksz transition threshold voltage, particularly with NZFO (0.05 wt%), which halved the voltage. Optical texture and structural analysis confirmed that the CNLC structure remain intact while maintaining the BP temperature window (12 C). The reduced splay elastic constant in all doped CNLC revealed that the optimum quantity of nanomaterials is occupied in the disclination site of BP, resulting in a reduction of volume and associated free energy around the disclinations to reduce threshold voltage. These findings highlight the potential of nanomaterial-doped CNLCs, especially magnetic NZFO NPs, in enabling high-performance, low-power BP-based LC displays for advanced applications. 2025 Elsevier B.V. -
Brinkman-Bard convection in a rotating-binary liquid saturated porous medium
The primary intent of the work is to investigate the linear and weakly non-linear stability analyses of natural convection in a rotating binary liquidsaturated porous medium. In the mathematical model, Newtonian binary liquid-saturated porous medium with uniform rotation subjected to stress-free isothermal boundaries and the validity of OseenBoussinesq approximation is considered in the study. Normal mode analysis is operated to acquire the DarcyRayleigh number expression in terms of the other parameters. The amount of heat and mass transfer rates are approximated at the lower boundary by performing weakly non-linear stability analysis using truncated Fourier series solution. The analysis of critical Rayleigh number, critical wave number, heat, and mass transfer is done for different values of parameters and discussed in detail with the help of plots and tables. Lewis number stabilizes the convective system, whereas increasing in the separation ratio coefficient destabilizes the convective system. Weakly nonlinear stability analysis reveals that the binary liquids with a smaller separation ratio coefficient transport the maximum heat and minimum mass compared to binary liquids with large separation ratio coefficient values. The amount of heat transport is enhanced by 14% with increase in the values of Ta whereas the same is diminished by 3.5 % and 5% respectively for the ? and Le. Thus, the effect of rotations pronounced on the onset of convection, heat and mass transports predominantly compared to the effect of binary mixtures parameters. The results of the classical RayleighBard convection and natural convection in a liquid-saturated porous medium with local thermal-equilibrium assumption can be obtained as a particular case of the study by setting the appropriate limits. 2025 Elsevier Ltd -
Positive psychology in individual wellness: a thematic illustration of drama as a therapeutic framework in identity transformation
Purpose: The language of participative theatre can be considered immersive in the treatment of its dialectics where participants engage fully with their dichotomies and value systems through physical and psychological exploratory processes as they commit themselves to transformation. Design/methodology/approach: The use of drama as an intervention for challenging recurring mental models of oppressive narratives is used extensively in experiential psychotherapy and as a socio-psychological integrative tool. This experiential methodology allows for an organic development and expression of themes and motifs by encouraging a participant to develop a deeper awareness of how he/she interprets their identity and that of the community in which they function. Findings: This paper aims to review the implications of applying drama-based interventions as positive psychotherapeutic devices to facilitate self-reflection and active-constructive responding in enabling a rendering of positive patterns of thought and purposeful movement towards emotional and physical well-being. Practical implications: Research on the principles of positive psychology suggests that positive emotions lead to therapeutic change. Nurturing positive emotions which are immanent in spirituality, creativity and optimistic perseverance through autonomy and self-regulation enable individual potential to come to meaningful fruition. A reliable inter-domain routing framework for autonomous systems using hybrid Blockchain
Inter-domain networks face several routing challenges, such as security, scalability, and reliability concerns in existing BGP-based systems. These challenges are exacerbated by the increasing number of interconnected networks and the lack of a standardized approach for routing data between them. Hybrid Blockchain-based framework has proposed for inter-domain routing in autonomous systems in this research. The framework combines the use of traditional routing protocols with the distributed ledger technology of Blockchain. It leverages the salient features of both to create a more secure and efficient routing framework. The Blockchain component provides a decentralized and tamper-proof ledger for storing routing information, while the traditional routing protocols handle the actual exchange of data between autonomous systems. The framework is designed to enhance the security of inter-domain routing by incorporating the use of digital signatures and information sharing among participating autonomous systems. Each participating system maintains a copy of the distributed ledger and can verify the authenticity of routing information using digital signatures. It ensures that only legitimate and authorized data is transmitted between autonomous systems, mitigating the risk of malicious attacks or illegitimate routing. The proposed framework obtained 87.73 % Route calculation Speed, 90.41 % Route filtering, 93.77 % Fault tolerance, 94.10 % Load balancing, 95.54 % Hop count, 95.13 % bandwidth consumption, 93.94 % Security Management and 96.29 % Convergence time. Factors influencing dynamic capabilities of entrepreneurial-led organisations to achieve analytical transformation
Entrepreneurial spirit transforms the economic scenario resulting in a significant contribution to society. Analytical transformation enables entrepreneurs with superior effective decision-making capability through information gathering, advanced technology adoption and data analysis. Effective analysis leads to superior organisational performance. However, in entrepreneurial-led large Indian organisations, the adoption of analytics is limited to predicting results. The study aims to identify the key factors that impact analytical transformation. The study also aims to identify key dynamic capabilities to achieve such transformation. This article identifies base theories related to the identified concepts. This article aims to develop an analytical transformation capability model for entrepreneurial-driven large industries. Computational investigation into the solvent effect, electron distribution, reactivity profile, pharmacokinetic properties and anti-cancer action of Hemimycalin C
This work consists of DFT studies and biological evaluation of the marine alkaloid Hemimycalin C. The DFT calculations include energy minimisation, reactivity analysis of the frontier molecular orbitals, electronic transition studies (UV spectra generation), molecular electrostatic potential colour map analysis (MEP), and natural bond orbitals (NBO) studies. Non-linear optical (NLO) properties estimation is also performed to obtain the first-order hyperpolarizability, mean polarizability and dipole moment of Hemimycalin C. The solvent methanol emerges as the most interesting among the polar solvents employed in this study, as it impacts the properties of Hemimycalin C to a significant extent. Multiwfn software is used for topological analyses, which include the calculation of Reduced Density Gradient (RDG), Localised Orbital Locator (LOL) maps), and Electron Localisation Function (ELF). The computed ADMET profile indicates that the molecule is a potent lead (drug candidate) as the medicinal chemistry parameters are mostly within the optimal range. The Ramachandran plots are also computed to show the stability and quality of the target proteins, by computation of the permitted psi and phi angles. The complexes of the ligand are docked using AutoDock Tools against blood cancer receptors to obtain good binding affinity values. 2025 Elsevier B.V. -
Emotional Intelligence and Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Indian Students in the Context of Interstate Education
India is known for its cultural diversity based on several factors, such as language, religion, race, and customs. In India, people used to move from one place to another for various purposes, and this was particularly the case with students in pursuit of education. In such situations, cross-cultural adaptation is one of the factors that facilitate their adjustment to new cultures and surroundings. Cross-cultural adaptation is needed when a person has to live in a different cultural setting than their own native place. Being sensitive to others emotions is essential when one lives in a new place. Emotional intelligence helps in that way and influences cross-cultural adaptation. Therefore, the present study was intended to explore the influence of emotional intelligence on cross-cultural adaptation. As many as 332 students, aged 17 to 29, who moved to another state for education, participated in the study. Emotional Intelligence Scale and Cross-Cultural Adjustment Scale were used for data collection. The components of emotional intelligence, such as self-emotional appraisal (SEA) and others emotional appraisal (OEA), were found to significantly influence expatriate adjustment. Furthermore, SEA and OEA have also influenced cultural novelty and the use of emotions (UOE). Students from rural areas were found to have more cross-cultural adaptation in the presence of their friends company compared to urban dwellers. Acid functionalized Arachis hypogaea skin based carbon nanosphere as efficacious material for enhanced energy storage
The present introduces a single step approach for enhancing supercapacitor performance by utilizing acid-functionalized porous carbon derived from the inner skin of Arachis hypogaea as a sustainable biomass precursor. Through pyrolysis at 800 C in a nitrogen atmosphere, the resulting porous carbon material demonstrates unique structural and electrochemical behavior as confirmed by FTIR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, FE-SEM, HR-TEM,EDS,BET analyses. The acid functionalized variant (FAH8) significantly outperformed the non-functionalized carbon (AH8), showing a fourfold increase in specific capacitance. Electrochemical evaluations revealed that FAH8 achieved a high specific capacitance of 273 Fg?1 at 0.25 Ag?1 in 3 M KOH, with an energy density of 22.5 Wh kg?1 and a power density of 125 W kg?1 in a three-electrode setup. The symmetrical CR2032 device of FAH8 exhibited a maximum capacitance of 98 Fg?1 and displayed excellent stability, with 98.5 % efficiency and 97.4 % capacitance retention after 7500 cycles. Notably, the device also delivered a high energy density of 23.17 Wh kg?1 and power density of 325.0 W kg?1. The enhanced performance attributed by the simple acid functionalization highlights the potential of this material in energy storage. Thus, the study not only emphasizes the effective use of low-cost biomass precursors but also provides a straightforward functionalization strategy to boost energy storage capabilities, paving the way for sustainable high-performance supercapacitors. 2025 Elsevier Ltd -
Direct ink writing of nickel oxide-based thin films for room temperature gas detection
The rapid industrial growth and increasing population have led to significant pollution and deterioration of the natural atmospheric environment. Major atmospheric pollutants include NO2 and CO2. Hence, it is imperative to develop NO2 and CO2 sensors for ambient conditions, that can be used in indoor air quality monitoring, breath analysis, food spoilage detection, etc. In the present study, two thin film nanocomposite (nickel oxide-graphene and nickel oxide-silver nanowires) gas sensors are fabricated using direct ink writing. The nano-composites are investigated for their structural, optical, and electrical properties. Later the nano-composite is deposited on the interdigitated electrode (IDE) pattern to form NO2 and CO2 sensors. The deposited films are then exposed to NO2 and CO2 gases separately and their response and recovery times are determined using a custom-built gas sensing setup. Nickel oxide-graphene provides a good response time and recovery time of 10 and 9 s, respectively for NO2, due to the higher electron affinity of graphene towards NO2. Nickel oxide-silver nanowire nano-composite is suited for CO2 gas because silver is an excellent electrocatalyst for CO2 by giving response and recovery times of 11 s each. Beyond brick and mortar: determinants of retail investors investment intention in indirect real estate through REITs in India
Purpose: This research aims to identify the factors that influence the investment intention of retail investors in Indian REITs. The study incorporates the theory of planned behavior and innovation diffusion theory as the research framework, with perceived risk and mass media influence as additional constructs. Design/methodology/approach: Primary data were collected using self-administered questionnaires from 534 potential investors in India. The data were analyzed using partial least square structural equation modeling. Findings: The study showed that factors such as relative advantage, compatibility, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control and mass media significantly and positively influence investment intention in Indian REITs. However, perceived risk was found to have a negative and significant influence, while complexity did not affect investment intention. Modelling the energy dependent X-ray variability of Mrk 335
We present a technique which predicts the energy dependent fractional r.m.s. for linear correlated variations of a pair of spectral parameters and apply it to an XMM-Newton observation of Mrk 335. The broadband X-ray spectrum can be interpreted as a patchy absorber partially covering the primary emission, a warm and hot coronal emission or a relativistically blurred reflection along with the primary emission. The fractional r.m.s. has a non-monotonic behaviour with energy for segments of lengths 3 and 6 ksecs. For each spectral model, we consider every pair of spectral parameters and fit the predicted r.m.s. with the observed ones, to get the pair which provides the best fit. We find that a variation in at least two parameters is required for all spectral interpretations. For both time segments, variations in the covering fraction of the absorber and the primary power law index gives the best result for the partial covering model, while a variation in the normalization and spectral index of the warm component gives the best fit in the two corona interpretation. For the reflection model, the best fit parameters are different for the two time segment lengths, and the results suggests that more than two parameters are required to explain the data. This, combined with the extreme values of emissivity index and reflection fraction parameters obtained from the spectral analysis, indicates that the blurred reflection model might not be a suitable explanation for the Mrk 335 spectrum. We discuss the results as well as the potential of the technique to be applied to other data sets of different AGN. 2025 Elsevier B.V. -
Role of psychological well-being, quality of life and distress tolerance in caregivers of geriatric population: an Indian exploratory study
Purpose: This study aims to gain an understanding of how caring for an ageing population affects caregivers psychological well-being, quality of life and ability to tolerate distress. This study provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by family caregivers and underscores the critical need for comprehensive support systems. Design/methodology/approach: A correlational method and cross-sectional research design was used for the study. For this, a sample of 200 caregivers in the age range of 2560 years who were taking care of the geriatric population above the age of 70 years for a minimum of one year were chosen. Four questionnaires ? Burden Scale for Family Caregivers, Psychological Well-Being Scale, World Health Organizations Quality of Life Scale-BRIEF version and Distress Tolerance Scale were chosen. Correlation and multivariate regression were calculated using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) 21 and Jamovi 3.4.1. Findings: This study found that there is a negative correlation of caregiver burden with psychological well-being, quality of life and distress tolerance. The sub-domains of self-acceptance, psychological health and tolerance levels were most impacted for the caregivers. Through multivariate regression, it was found that the caregiver burden significantly predicted psychological well-being and quality of life. Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on the English-speaking caregivers which may overlook the diverse linguistic and cultural variations within the broader caregiver community in India and the data collection exclusively targeted family caregivers providing support to geriatric population without chronic illnesses. This restriction could potentially limit the generalizability of the findings to the broader caregiving context. Practical implications: The implications of this research are that for caregivers, this study underscores the importance of tailored support programmes that address the negative impact of caregiver burden on psychological well-being and quality of life. Health-care professionals can use the findings to incorporate mental health assessments and interventions within caregiving contexts, recognizing the interconnected nature of these variables. Policymakers can use the findings to inform policies related to caregiver support and health-care resource allocation. Originality/value: In India, the social norm is that children are expected to take care of their parents when they become old. Taking care of elderly parents can be challenging, even emotionally. As a result, this study will focus on how caregivers psychological well-being, quality of life and ability to tolerate distress are affected. Polyoxometalate/?-Fe2O3/polyaniline composite: Tailored approaches for high-performance supercapacitors
The need for portable, high-performance electronics that have high power or energy density has increased significantly in recent years. In this work, a composite material was coated on stainless steel that consists of polyoxometalate (POM)/?-Fe2O3/polyaniline (PANI) as an electrode material for a symmetric supercapacitor. ?-Fe2O3 was prepared using starch as a template while PANI was electrodeposited. The physical and chemical characteristics of the modified electrodes were investigated via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic charge[sbnd]discharge (GCD) experiments. In 1 M H2SO4, the composite had a specific capacitance of 528 F/g at a current density of 0.2 A/g. In addition, the composite exhibited a high energy density of 73.4 Wh kg?1 at a high-power density of 7.14 kW kg?1 and 91.62 % capacity retention after 10 cycles. The results show that POM/?-Fe2O3/PANI is a promising composite electrode for use as a supercapacitor electrode material. 2024 The Authors
