Academic stress and its sources among university students
Stress has become part of students' academic life due to the various internal and external expectations placed upon their shoulders. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the problems associated with academic stress as transitions occur at an individual and social level. It therefore, becomes imperative to understand the sources and impact of academic stress in order to derive adequate and efficient intervention strategies. The study employed a quantitative research design where participants were screened using Academic Stress Scale (Rajendran& Kaliappan,1991 from four streams namely, commerce, management, humanities, and basic sciences. The five dimensions of sources such as personal inadequacy, fear of failure, interpersonal difficulties with teachers, teacher pupil relationship and inadequate study facilities were further analysed and gender differences were also obtained. Understanding the sources of stress would facilitate the development of effective counselling modules and intervention strategies by school psychologists and counsellors in order to help students alleviate stress. Neurobiological aspects of violent and criminal behaviour: Deficits in frontal lobe function and neurotransmitters
Many neurobiological abnormalities have been reported in patients with violent and criminal behaviour. Strong associations exist between aggressive/violent behaviour and brain dysfunction. Also, many studies support an association between frontal lobe dysfunction and increased aggressive or antisocial behaviour. The focal orbitofrontal brain injury is specifically associated with increased aggression. Deficits in frontal lobe executive functions may increase the likelihood of future aggression, but as of now, studies have reliably demonstrated a characteristic pattern of frontal network dysfunction predictive of violent crime. The evidence is strongest for an association between focal prefrontal damage and an impulsive subtype of aggressive behaviour. This paper covers dysfunctions in these regions contributing to severe aggressive and violent behaviour, as well as neurotransmitters implicated in the same. 2018 International Journal of Criminal Justice Sciences (IJCJS). -
Brain-based learning method: Opportunities and challenges
The chapter examines the concept of brain-based learning to bridge the gap between neuropsychology and education while understanding the best way to use our brain for meaningful learning. It suggests learning as a developmental process that enhances in a challenging but less threatening environment. Brain plasticity suggests that repeated exposure to a stimulus in a conducive environment helps in better recall and retrieval, as the repeated exposure allows the formation of new neural connections and strengthening the old ones while engaging in the task. As the application of brain-based learning moves away from the traditional style of learning, it focuses on a more holistic understanding of the process of learning. The chapter talks about applying a brain-based learning model to enhance learning in a stimulating surrounding to explore and stimulate various sense organs and further enhance neural connections. It discusses strategies to incorporate to allow engagement of sensory organs and problem-solve to enhance learning. Another perspective suggests attaching emotion to a situation which leads to forming a meaningful association in our brain. Depending on the strength of this connection, it becomes easier to recall and retrieve the memory. Importance of brain-based learning in effective teaching process
Neuroscience plays an important role to inform about brain functioning and corresponding behaviors. While scientists have continuously studied about brain in its entirety, several other fields in science, arts, and humanities are drawing applications from these neuroscientific studies. Similarly, in terms of education too, there are several applications. Once such is brain-based learning. This is to learn and teach with an understanding about brain's capability and functioning to increase one's learning potential. In order to do so, effective teaching is required. This particular chapter thus focuses on different teaching strategies which adopt brain-based learning and are evidence-based. The chapter initially informs about neuroscience and cognitive science interaction and its impact on effective teaching-learning process. Psychogenic Non-epileptic Seizures in Children: Prevention and Intervention Strategies
Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) often get misdiagnosed to be epileptic seizures, and the price that is paid for the same by the patient and the family is huge. It is called by multiple names such as pseudoseizures non-epileptic attack disorder, dissociative seizures, and functional motor disorder. Not only is it difficult to identify the disorder, but it also poses an added difficulty with comorbid epilepsy. Adding on to these, it becomes difficult for both the healthcare provider to offer psychoeducation and the family to accept since no tangible evidence such as scans portrays any abnormality. Though in a simple manner it can be said this disorder presents itself like epileptic seizures but has no neurological base, explaining the same to the patients and their family is not as simple. However, surprisingly the prognosis for PNES is better for children. This chapter thus focuses on aspects that are essential for the treatment of the disorder and prevention. In particular, the manifestation of PNES in children is discussed by introducing the disorder with epidemiological information. Further clinical picture, etiology, diagnosis and prevention and intervention are discussed. Although there are limited studies that exist on the treatment of the disorder in the pediatric population, their outcomes to reduce PNES symptoms are significant. Hence, the chapter makes an attempt to review these studies in detail and mention highlights of these studies that contribute to a reduction in the symptoms. Finally, the chapter concludes with a biopsychosocial model that explains the relationship between these factors and PNES and how this can be used in prevention. Misuse of Internet Among School Children: Risk Factors and Preventative Measures
The Internet has been one of the most transformative and rapidly growing technologies. In recent years, it has improved the quality of life in areas such as communication, education, recreation. On the contrary, there are growing concerns about the use of the Internet that have created adverse consequences in the areas of social life, interpersonal relationships, family environment, and school activities. School-going children were vulnerable to such unhealthy outcomes due to readily available high-speed Internet and ease of access to different Internet platforms, which resulted in risky behaviours, decreased academic performance, poor nutrition, decreased sleep quality, and a high incidence of inter-social conflicts. While the majority of the research has focused on the adolescent population in terms of problematic Internet use, only a few studies have identified the vulnerabilities of school-going children in the same context. The research also confirmed that the risk factors for problematic Internet use start as early as middle childhood. Heightened risky use of the Internet was observed in children with neurodevelopmental concerns. This study explores risk factors associated with problematic Internet use among school-going children, identifying relevant warning signs followed with preventative measures. Evaluation of relation of personality, parenting, stress and depression in patients with secondary amenorrhoea
Background: Relatively few studies have assessed psychosocial correlates for secondary amenorrhea. Our study of the Gynaecological condition concerning personality factor (on introversion-extroversion dimension), parenting (authoritarian and authoritative) style, depression and perceived stress addresses this gap in the literature. The study inquires, whether these variables are related. Aims and objectives: To evaluate the relation of personality, parenting, stress and depression in patients with secondary amenorrhoea. Methods: Evaluation was done for forty-four young-adult female patients (with their fathers alive) affected by secondary amenorrhea, requesting help for menstrual disorders. The Parental Authority Questionnaire administered on the parent of patients, and Beck Depression Inventory, Perceived stress scale, Kundu Introversion-Extraversion Inventory on patients. In addition to that sixty healthy participants were recruited. The 104 participants were divided into two groups according to the presence (44 cases) or the absence (60 cases) of clinically diagnosed secondary amenorrhea. Results: Appropriate use of correlation coefficient followed by a test of significance revealed significant correlations between the variables which were hypothesised in accordance and hadbeen discussedregarding future research. Conclusions: Secondary amenorrhea was found to be possibly associated with personality factors, stress, depression and the kind of parenting individuals receive during their lifetime. -
Securing the Digital Realm: Unmasking Fraud in Online Transactions Using Supervised Machine Learning Techniques
A key component of contemporary banking systems and e-commerce platforms is identifying fraud in online transactions. Traditional rule-based techniques are insufficient for preventing sophisticated fraud schemes because of the increasing complexity and number of expanding online transactions. This research study examines the development of fraud detection methods, emphasizing data analytics and machine learning (ML) models. The study also focuses on the fact that developing efficient fraud detection systems requires continuous observation, data preprocessing, feature selection, and testing of models. Seven ML models, Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Trees (DT), k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Nae Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forests (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) are considered for classifying the dataset into fraudulent or not. During the experimentation study, it was observed that XGBoost yielded the highest accuracy of 99% when compared to other models. Users can determine which features significantly influence the model's predictions by using XGBoost's feature significance insights. Additionally, XGBoost provides integrated support for managing missing values in data, negating the requirement for imputation and other preprocessing procedures. Due to these, it performed better. Deep Learning Based Age Estimation Model
To improve accuracy and resilience in demographic categorization, this research presents a novel use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for age prediction. Deep learning is utilized to achieve this goal. Precise estimation of age has become essential in a variety of areas, including human-computer interaction, marketing, and healthcare. The ability of CNNs to handle the intricacies of facial features for accurate demographic forecasts is examined in this study. The research covers every step of the age prediction process, including dataset collection, prepossessing, model architecture, and assessment measures. The CNN is trained to automatically extract hierarchical characteristics from facial photos, which enables the model to recognize complex patterns related to age. The architecture's flexibility to different lighting conditions, facial expressions, and postures. In this research, we deal with deep learning-based perceived age estimation in still-face pictures. Our Convolution Neural Network models (CNNs) have been trained prior on Image Net for picture classification, as they use the VGG architecture. In addition, we analyze the effects of tailoring over Web photos having known age, considering a lack of apparent age-annotated annotated images. In addition, this work adds to the increasing library of studies on the use of deep learning methods for demographic data evaluation by showing the effectiveness of CNNs to predict age. Effect of post annealing on DC magnetron sputtered tungsten oxide (WO3) thin films for smartwindow applications
Tungsten oxide (WO3) thin films were deposited on Fluorine Doped Tin Oxide (FTO) and Corning Glass (CG) glass substrate by DC magnetron sputtering. The annealing temperature was varied to study its effect on surface morphology, structural, electrochromic (EC), and optical properties and these are investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Cyclic voltammetry, and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy. From SEM analysis WO3 thin films annealed at 27 C, 100 C, 200 C, and 300 C were shown to crack free after that cracked film was observed for 400 C. From the XRD investigation that the WO3 thin films annealed at 27 C, 100 C, 200 C, and 300 C were amorphous and crystallized at 400 C. The optical band gap (Eg) of WO3 films was decreased from 2.98 eV to 2.30 eV with an increase in annealed temperature. The coloration efficiency (CE) was observed at 51.26 cm2/C at 300 C and 35.06 cm2/C at 400 C and the lowest diffusion coefficient was observed at 5.86 10?10 cm2/s at 400 C. On coloring efficiency, which can be very important in electrochromic (EC) applications, post-annealing has been seen to have a strong influence. 2023 Elsevier B.V. -
Modernized energy management system: A review
The usage of renewable energy system (RES) and its management is vital for reliable electrical energy delivery without pollution. In the scenario of increase in distributed generations (DGs), to utilize the generated electricity from RES without any wastage, to avoid the consumption of electricity during peak hours, to store and retrieve energy in an efficient way from the battery, there is a need for overall energy management system (EMS). As the prices for electricity and pollution are reduced, the review of available methodologies is discussed in this paper. The EMS takes decision based on the predicted load demand. So, the different prediction methodologies and their benefits are also discussed here. Though the electric vehicles (EVs) are considered as load in power system, the storage facility of the EVs are also used as power backup facilities through vehicle to grid (V2G) technology. Epidemiological Transition in India and Determinants that Are Shifting Disease Burden: A Systematic Review
Indias disease burden patterns are shifting towards increased morbidity and mortality from Non-communicable disease and chronic diseases. This is one of the first studies conducted using the PRISMA guidelines and checklist to understand the role played by various determinants of health in this epidemiological transition happening in India. The search on 9 reputed bibliographic databases yielded 459 articles and finally 58 articles were selected based on carefully curated selection criteria. The results confirm the relation between India's demographic transition and the increasing disease burden from Non-communicable diseases (NCDs). 21 studies significantly associated urban residential status, increasing income, better living conditions and education with increasing NCDs' prevalence. 12 studies found that NCDs were more prevalent among women than men. Increased physical activity, a healthy diet and a lower hipto-waist ratio were observed to protect against NCDs. While 9 studies found smoking tobacco and alcohol consumption were not significantly associated with the prevalence of NCDs. It is of foremost importance that Indias public health policy focus must shift towards inclusivity as there is an affluent gradient to the increased morbidity and mortality from NCDs. Machine Learning based Loan Eligibility Prediction using Random Forest Model
When one or more people, organizations, or other entities lend money to other people, organizations, or entities, it is known as a loan. The recipient (that is the borrower) takes on a debt for which he or she is normally accountable for interest payments until the loan is repaid. The major goal of this proposed model is to ensure that an individual, institution, or organization seeking for a loan is properly verified before granting them the loan they require. Before authorizing a loan for any individual or business several factors must be considered. That including gender, education, and the number of dependents. The goal of proposed model is to automate the method, which will save time and energy while improving the efficiency of the process. This particular process input is having two different kind of data set. First one is train data set and second set is test data set. The first date set that is train data set is generally used to train and assess the machine learning model accuracy. The loan eligibility predictions are generated using the test data set. To forecast loan eligibility and train this random forest, machine learning method called Random Forest. The proposed random forest model is providing higher accuracy level. This model is providing 28 % higher accuracy level compare to regular prediction. 2022 IEEE. -
DROUGHT MITIGATION THROUGH HYDROGEL APPLICATION IN RICE (Oryza sativa L.) CULTIVATION
Sustainability in irrigation is an essential step towards responsible water consumption. In recent years, many studies have sketched climate-resilient agricultural practices to fight drought and uncertain rainfall patterns. Major rain-fed crops such as paddy and wheat require aid when there are abnormal dry spells. To mitigate the loss of crops from such events, superabsorbent polymers can be used. Soils amended with hydrogel or Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) retain moisture during drought to prevent loss of water through evaporation and percolation. This allows the crop to grow with less shock from drought. This study compares rice (Oryza sativa L.) growth rate under application (treatment groups) and non-application (control groups) of hydrogel, considering their high-water requirement. NDLR07 (recently developed) and BPT5204 (local variety) rice varieties were chosen for the current study. Randomized controlled trials were performed for each variety on a control group (NC & BC) and 3 treatment groups with 20% (NT20 & BT20), 40% (NT40 & BT40), and 60% (NT60 & BT60) deficit water supplies respectively. N, T, C refers to seed type, treatment group, control group respectively. Intermittent drought condition was imposed for 14 days to assess the resilience of crops. The water retention capacity of the sandy loam soil was better for treatment groups by 20% than control groups even at an average temperature of 40 ?. Treatment groups continued growing through the drought phase and after, while control groups showed stagnation. Among the tested treatment groups, NT20 had the highest growth among all trials. The results of the study suggested that hydrogel application can help to combat droughts and thereby contribute to sustainable agricultural production by restricting the involvement of climate changes. 2021, Editorial board of Journal of Experimental Biology and Agricultural Sciences.
