An Efficient Underwater Image Restoration Model for Digital Image Processing
Digital image processing (DIP) is showing a massive growth intodays trending world particularly, in the field of biological research. Underwater image analysis plays a vital role, where the images are easily prone to attenuation and haziness. Capturing underwater images has always been a challenging job due to dispersion and scattering of light inside water on a high scale. Several image enhancement and restoration methodologies are currently available to address these issues, where hazing and color diffusion are viewed as a common phenomenon in it. Such procedures normally includes two basic methodologies in it, namely dehazing and contrast or color enhancement, which improves the overall output of the degraded image. However, the quality and processing time of the images can still be enhanced with additional techniques incorporated to it. This work is intended toward proposing one such channel called improvised bright channel prior for dehazing the underwater images. The technique further improves on the existing methodologies by estimating the atmospheric light and refining the transmittance of the image along with image restoration. The experimental results show that the improvised bright channel prior methodology is found to perform better in dehazing underwater images with a balanced intensity in terms of dark and white patches obtained from it. When comparing and contrasting the processing time of the proposed methodology with the existing techniques, it is found that improvised bright channel prior performs better. Also, the quality of the dehazed underwater image obtained from the proposed channel is found to be effective when compared with the existing channels. 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. -
Effect of age and gender on dietary patterns, mindful eating, body image and confidence
The emergence of Diet Culture came into existence with the era of pop culture, which emphasized the idea of body improvement by embracing the portrayal of unrealistic beauty standards set by the thin-ideal media. This growing and trending culture gained its popularity in India with the COVID pandemic and the imposed lockdown, wherein the prevalence of obesity and binge eating resulted from counter-regulatory eating behaviors and restrictive food intake to a greater extent of skipping meals to achieve the desired body type. The present empirical investigation focuses on understanding the gender and age-based differences (between the ages 18 to 55) among Indian population on dietary patterns, body image, mindful eating and physical appearance confidence using 2 3 factorial design. The tools used were Eating Behavior Pattern Questionnaire (EBPQ) [43], Body Self- image Questionnaire (BSIQ) [40], Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ) [18] and Personal Evaluation Inventory (PEI) [44] were administered on a sample size of 120, selected using convenience sampling technique. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS Version 20.0. Results of the study reveal non-significant age and gender differences for mindful eating and appearance confidence. Significant age- differences were observed for Snacking and convenience F(2,114) = 6.22, p <.05; social dependence F(2,114) = 3.87, p <.05 and height dissatisfaction F(2,114) = 8.79, p <.05. And, significant gender differences were observed for Meal Skipping F(1,114) = 6.46, P <.05; snacking and convenience F(1,114) = 4.19, p <.05; fatness evaluation F(1,114) = 5.94, p <.05 and fitness evaluation F(1,114) = 5.33, p <.05. The only significant interaction effect observed was for social dependence dimension F(2, 114) = 3.96, p <.05. Thus, high exposure to social media and diet-related content contributed significantly to changing dietary patterns, and how they look, feel or perceive their body. 2023, BioMed Central Ltd., part of Springer Nature. -

THEORY OF MIND AS A UNIFYING CONSTRUCT OF RELIGIOUS COGNITION AND EUDAIMONIC WELL-BEING AMONG CHRISTIAN ADOLESCENTS
Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability of an individual to identify or predict others emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. In the context of religious cognition and eudaimonic well-being, ToM can be understood as the cognitive process through which individuals interpret and understand religious experiences, knowledge, behaviour, attitudes, and beliefs. These variables are known for sustained psychological and religious consistency in an individual's life. Eudaimonic well-being, on the other hand, refers to the long-lasting effects on individuals mental and spiritual health, enabling them to find purpose and meaning in life, depending on the individual, religion, and society. ToM is an emerging aspect of cognitive neuroscience, rapidly expanding its field to evolution, brain imaging, and religious cognition. The period of adolescence is when adolescents are put into a turbulence of terrible confusion about their identity, beliefs, and autonomy. A thorough understanding of ToM based on religious cognition will foster adolescents' spiritual and mental health. This article connects ToM to religious cognition and the eudaimonic well-being of adolescents in Christian traditions. We propose that ToM could illuminate the relationship between religious cognition and eudaimonic well-being and provide a deepened understanding of these variables in psycho-spiritual therapy. This article also reveals the healing role of ToM on religious cognition and eudaimonic well-being during adolescence and the importance of focusing on spiritual and mental health as developmental assets that can potentially influence them in the future. 2024 Journal of Dharma: Dharmaram Journal of Religions and Philosophies (DVK, Bangalore). -
Social-cognitive Skills Training on Interpersonal Understanding of Social Norms During Adolescence
Background: Social-cognitive skills training (SCST) in a therapeutic setup can result in more positive outcomes when incorporated with psychotherapy, especially among adolescents with minor social-cognitive impairments in their social interactions. It may result in multifarious benefits to mitigate their social-cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to identify the effects of SCST on interpersonal understanding of social norms in adolescents with low social cognition. Methods: In this quasi-experimental research, 80 adolescents (1019 years) with low social cognition, no previous experience of skills training, and absence of any psychological disorders, especially those that affect their social-cognitive functioning, with assent from the participants and written informed consent from the parents/guardian and a score below 58 on the Need For Social-Cognition Scale, were included. They were randomly allocated into SCST or waitlist control group. SCST consists of 20 sessions with indoor activities, games, and discussions, and it has been arranged for 1 hour per 3 days a week for 3 months. Edinburgh social cognition test (ESCoT) was used to assess the degree of interpersonal understanding of social norms among adolescents as part of pre and posttests. Results: The Wilcoxon Sign Ranked Test showed that the interpersonal understanding of social norms after SCST is significantly higher than the interpersonal understanding of social norms SCST with a large effect size. The mean (standard deviation) scores in the ESCoT test improved significantly (P < 0.001) following [W = 0.001, P <.001, r = 1.000]. Conclusion: SCST effectively improves the interpersonal understanding of social norms, an essential developmental milestone during adolescence. It highlights the importance of focusing on mental health as a developmental asset that can influence social-cognitive development in the future. 2024 The Author(s). -
Unlocking eudaimonic well-being: Assessing the impact of adolescent social cognitive skills training
Eudaimonic well-being (EWB) has long-lasting effects on individuals' mental health, enabling them to find purpose and meaning in life, depending on the individual and society. Social cognitive skills training constitutes a new aspect of the adolescent's social development, including three domains: cognitive ToM, affective ToM, and an inter-intra-personal understanding of social norms. This chapter identifies the effectiveness of A-SCST on eudaimonic well-being (EWB) during adolescence. A quasi-experimental research design was used in this study. The authors administrated the PWB-18 scale as a screening tool and the PWB-42 item scale as an outcome measure. Seventy-four participants and adolescents participated in this study. This study confirmed that A-SCST has a positive outcome on the eudaimonic well-being of adolescents post-training with a large effect size, t =-13.0, df = 35, p <.001, r =-2.17 in the experimental group. The A-SCST has successfully improved the eudaimonic well-being of adolescents. 2024, IGI Global. -

AI in Forensics A Data Analytics Perspective
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming the most significant science in all areas of life, and forensic science is one of the fields benefiting from it. Forensics can be defined as a study of crime via the use of scientific methods and techniques. Around the globe, governments invest a large amount of money in developing forensics techniques to prove criminal activities and track criminals effectively. It is now becoming a practice to involve artificial intelligence in supporting the forensic application. It involves a smart and intelligent examination of massive volumes of very complicated data. As a result, AI is becoming an excellent solution for addressing many of the complicated issues that now exist in forensics. For example, AI proves more effective in skeleton-based human identification compared to the traditional skull/skeleton superimposition method. AI can be used to pool meta-data generated from multiple sources connected to forensic science and do a meta-analysis on it to simplify complex data. AI finds patterns and uses them to identify/recognize/predict something that is required in crime tracking or criminal/victim recognition. Complex analytics and probabilistic reasoning are used to recognize patterns. Among the most crucial things to forensic science is the identification of specific sorts of patterns in enormous amounts of data. This could include image pattern recognition, in which the program attempts to distinguish between distinct components of an image or a person. Other types of pattern recognition, such as finding patterns in text, may also exist. Artificial intelligence aids in the more accurate recognition of such patterns in complex data. This chapter introduces the reader to several aspects of artificial intelligence that can be used in forensics. 2024 selection and editorial matter, S. Vijayalakshmi, P. LANGUAGE CONTACT AND CHANGE: AN ANALYSIS OF HERITAGE KONKANI IN KERALA; [CONTACTE LINGSTIC I CANVI: UNA ANISI DEL PATRIMONI KONKANI A KERALA]; [CONTACTO LINGSTICO Y CAMBIO: UN ANISIS DEL PATRIMONIO KONKANI EN KERALA]
This paper analyses the extent of language contact induced change in the sound system of heritage Konkani community of Kerala, India. Heritage Konkanis, belonging to different castes namely Gowda Saraswat Brahmins (GSB), Saraswat non-brahmins, Konkan Sonars, Vaishya Vaniyar and Kudumbi, started migrating to Kerala in the late 13th century. The upper caste GSBs remained as a closed community until 20th century, which helped in the maintenance of their language. Linguistic data for the study was collected from 20 GSB youths of the age group 18-35 using Snowball sampling method. The analysis of the data shows loss of features such as aspiration and nasalization, which are inherent to Konkani. This indicates the vulnerable linguistic situation of the GSB community whose mother tongue exhibits linguistic variations, as a result of prolonged coexistence with the majority language, Malayalam. 2024 University of Barcelona.
