Photophysical and antitubercular studies on newly synthesised structurally architectured sulphonamide
This study presents the synthesis and characterisation of four mono-azo sulphonamide derivatives through diazo-coupling electrophilic substitution reactions. The structural analysis of the synthesised molecules was conducted utilising FT-IR, 1H-NMR and HR-MS techniques. Absorption and fluorescence maxima of the synthesised molecules were determined across solvents of varying polarity to explore Solvatochromic behaviour. Density functional theory was employed to elucidate electronic and optical properties, including the computation of HOMOLUMO energies using Gaussian 09W software, with comparisons to experimental data. Molecular electrostatic potential 3D plots identified electrophilic and nucleophilic sites. Solvent interactions were evaluated using KamletAbboud Taft and Catalan parameters. Further, global chemical reactivity descriptors were estimated to ascertain chemical reactivity of the molecules. Additionally, the effectiveness of the colourant anti-tubercular activity was evaluated using in vitro and molecular docking techniques. The biological activity results reveal that methyl-pyridone and barbituric acid coupled with sulphamethizole (SMP and SMB) displayed excellent anti-tubercular activity compared with the standard Gentamycin. 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. -
Propensity Score Matching and a Difference in Difference Approach to Assess ESGs Influence on Indian Acquirer Performance
This research involves an in-depth analysis of the intricate relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance scores and the financial and operational performance of Indian acquirers. The research methodology employed herein entails a meticulously crafted design, incorporating a blend of the Propensity Score Matching and Difference-in-Differences model. This strategic amalgamation serves to rigorously assess the impact of ESG factors on the performance outcomes of Indian acquirers involved in M&As. The empirical findings of this study reveal a robust and statistically significant correlation between M&A endeavours and ESG considerations. Notably, the research discerns that M&A activities tend to exert an adverse influence on ESG performance metrics within the Indian corporate landscape. This nuanced insight underscores the multifaceted interplay between strategic corporate actions and the broader sustainability and governance landscape, thereby offering valuable implications for scholars and practitioners in finance and corporate strategy. 2024, University of Wollongong. A comprehensive molecular docking-based study to identify potential drug-candidates against the novel and emerging severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) by targeting the nucleoprotein
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a newly emerging haemorrhagic fever that is caused by an RNA virus called Severe fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome virus (SFTSV). The disease has spread globally with a case fatality rate of 30%. The nucleoprotein (N) of the virus has a pivotal role in replication and transcription of RNA inside the host. Considering that no specific treatment regime is suggested for the disease, N protein may be regarded as the potential candidate drug target. In the present study, in silico molecular docking was performed with 130 compounds (60 natural compounds and 70 repurposed synthetic drugs) against the N protein. Based on the binding affinity (kcal mol?1), we selected Cryptoleurine (?10.323kcalmol?1) and Ivermectin (?10.327kcalmol?1) as the top-ranked ligands from the natural compounds and repurposed synthetic drugs groups respectively, and pharmacophore analysis of these compounds along with other high performing ligands revealed that two aromatic and one acceptor groups could strongly interact with the target protein. Finally, molecular dynamic simulations of Cryptoleurine and Ivermectin showed stable interactions with the N protein of SFTSV. To conclude, Cryptoleurine and Ivermectin can be considered as a potential therapeutic agent against the infectious SFTS virus. Graphical abstract: (Figure presented.) Automated and Interpretable Fake News Detection With Explainable Artificial Intelligence
Fake news is a piece of misleading or forged information that affects society, business, governments, etc., hence is an imperative issue. The solution presented here to detect fake news involves purely using rigorous machine learning approaches in implementing a hybrid of simple yet accurate fake text detection models and fake image detection models to detect fake news. The solution considers the text and images of any news article, extracted using web scraping, where the text segment of a news article is analyzed using an ensemble model of the Nae Bayes, Random Forest, and Decision Tree classifier, which showed improved results than the individual models. The image segment of a news article is analyzed using only a Convolution Neural Network, which showed optimal accuracy similar to the text model. To better train the text models, data preprocessing and aggregation methods were used to combine various fake-real news datasets to have ample amounts of data. Similarly, the CASIA dataset was used to train the image model, over which Error Level Analysis was performed to detect fake images. model results are represented as confusion matrices and are measured using various performance metrics. Optimal ordering and discounting policy for a segmented market with price and freshness dependent demand for mixed quality product
Owing to various factors, fresh produce purchased by the retailer is initially of mixed quality. A random proportion of the lot would generally have lost some freshness before being received in stock, while the remaining items would still be fresh. This calls for some discount initially for the former, and later, when the latter product is not so fresh. For demand declining with increase in selling price and decrease in freshness, this paper deals with optimal ordering and discounting policy when the lot received is of mixed quality and the market has two segments differentiated by the initial product quality sold simultaneously at widely different prices. Sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of optimal cycle length and the optimal discount are obtained. Sensitivity analysis reveals that increase in freshness time and proportion of initially fresh items in the lot result in increased profit rate. Copyright 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd. -
Feminism in Practice: Learning from the Barefoot Solar Mamas
The Barefoot College (India) is an NGO working in the fields of education, skills development, health, drinking water, and solar power mainly to train older, rural women who are determined to challenge restrictive gender roles in their respective communities. Since its inception, the NGO has trained over 2,000 rural women as solar engineers across 93 countries worldwide and has brought electricity to over 18,000 homes. Barefoot trainers employ non-normative methods of sharing knowledge such as color coding, sign language, and practical experience. This paper conducts a critical assessment of the Barefoot College Solar Electrification Programme to explore how it empowers illiterate and semi-literate women from remote rural areas around the world to become solar engineers (or Solar Mamas). It utilizes qualitative research methods to analyze this women's empowerment project as a landmark practical application of decolonial feminist theory. The paper contends that the Barefoot approach both challenges and conforms to the Women in Development and Gender and Development approaches of the past. The research is grounded methodologically in feminist praxis and also borrows from the conceptual frameworks of Feminist Political Ecology and Women and the Politics of Place. Stories and personal experiences from Solar Mamas have been highlighted to understand the real world impact of the program. Fractional Approach for Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reactions Model with Unified Technique
The Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction model represents chemical oscillators that exhibit periodic vibrations as a result of complex physic-chemical phenomena. The non-linear behaviour exhibited by Belousov-Zhabotinsky model is the cause of Turing patterns, birth of spiral waves, rise of limit cycle attractors, and deterministic chaos in many chemical reaction processes. Due to these noteworthy characteristics, in this paper, we have analyzed mathematical Belousov-Zhabotinsky model by a novel numerical approach q-Homotopy analysis transformation method. To interpret new observations, we have incorporated Caputo fractional derivative in the model. The numerical result are presented graphically and concerning the absolute error of solutions. With the help of the homotopy parameter curve, we have projected the convergence region with reference to diverse values of fractional derivative. Heat and mass transfer analysis of Casson-based hybrid nanofluid flow in the presence of an aligned magnetic field: An application toward mechanical engineering
This examination explores the flow of a hybridized nanofluid (HyNf) containing silica and tin oxide nanoparticles mixed with engine oil (EO/SnO2-SiO2). The flowing occurs via a permeable material constrained by a semi-infinite flat plate. The study takes into account various factors such as convective heat and mass transference, chemical reactions, the Dufour effect, the Lorentz force, thermal radiative fluxing, and radiative absorbing. The research involves converting the managing formulas of the flowing model into a dimensionless form and applying the regular perturbation procedure to find solutions for the rate of fluid flow, temperature, and species diffusion. The surface frictional factor, Nusselt quantity, and Sherwood quantity reflect the shearing stress, rates of heat transference, and rates of mass transport at the plate, respectively. An analysis is conducted on the impact of several factors, including the suction variable, magnetic variable, radiation-absorbing factor, Casson parameter, and Dufour number, on the flow and related quantities. This analysis is based on an examination of graphs and tables. The findings suggest that the heat transference rate in the Casson hybridized nanofluid is better than that in the mono nanofluid. It is exposed that the temperature reduces at the plate having improved frequency of oscillation and also fluid velocity declines for improving values of aligned magnetized field (Formula presented.), but it shows the reverse phenomenon with Gr1 and Gc1. Reward Based Garbage Monitoring and Collection System Using Sensors
Most of the time in our surroundings we come across the overfilled garbage bins near the lakes. When the bins are full, people just throw the waste here and there, which eventually goes into the lakes and pollutes the water bodies. This is because of improper dumping of garbage that is practiced in our society. With the increase in population, this problem is taking really bad shape. The prime need is to maintain a clean and healthy environment with proper disposal of waste. This paper presents a small effort to reduce this garbage problem. An Android app has been created which keeps on checking whether the dustbin is full. Also, the people will be rewarded for throwing waste into the dustbins. A QR code has been attached to the dustbin which will be scanned for rewarding the people. The dustbins use an IR sensor that detects the receiver of waste in bins. Major part of this proposed system includes the proper working of mobile application and proximity sensors. Arduino is used to maintain the proper connection with sensors and application and that is done by Bluetooth sensor. The main objective of this proposed system is to lure people to put waste into the dustbin along with the contribution towards smart city vision. Mindfulness-based strengths practice: a conceptual framework and empirical review of the literature
This review set out to provide empirical literature on mindfulness-based strengths practice (MBSP), a new approach in positive psychology that integrates mindfulness with character strengths, two positive predictors of well-being. First, the conceptualization of integrating character strengths and mindfulness into MBSP is discussed. The literature on the interrelatedness of character strengths and mindfulness is then described, along with ways that the intervention of MBSP encourages positive outcomes at various levels. The literature search returned 7 (10 samples, N = 3,851) studies supporting a positive association between character strengths and mindfulness (r = 0.30.4) and the mediating role of character strengths/virtues in mindfulness and mindfulnesss role in enhancing character strengths toward psychological well-being. The nine MBSP intervention studies (9 samples, N = 354) conducted in diverse contexts provide evidence of a significant improvement in well-being, engagement, life satisfaction, mindfulness, positive affect, character strengths, work-related outcomes, heightened birthing parents well-being during pregnancy and childbirth, increased academic performance, and enhanced mental health among students. The intervention studies also reported the fostering of mindful positive parenting and contributions to a significant reduction in negative psychological states, such as stress, depression, anxiety, and negative affect. This comprehensive review provides empirical support for the MBSP framework and its positive impact on well-being across various domains, including organizations, education, healthcare, and family. However, it underscores the need for more extensive research, as the current literature on MBSP is limited. The review encourages future studies to explore MBSP applications in diverse domains, thereby paving the way for a deeper understanding of its potential benefits. 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. -
Philanthropic and Functional Motivation of DREAMS Afterschool Intervention Programme Volunteers: A Correlational Study
Rapid increase in access to information and communication technology among youths have changed their approach towards life. Present study aims to find the relationship between philanthropy and functional motivation among fresh DREAMS volunteers. Study adopted two standardized tool to measure philanthropy and functional motivation. Study selected all the fresh 255 volunteers who just joined DREAMS afterschool intervention programme (AIP), which included 25 boys and 230 girls. Study employed descriptive correlational design and administered the survey questionnaire to participants of the study. Statistical analysis of the data revealed a significant positive moderate correlation between philanthropy and functional motivation. Philanthropy could explain 11.8% variation in functional motivation of fresh volunteers. Quartile points explains almost 74% of the participants fared high on functional motivation than philanthropy. Thus, present day youths have high functional motivation to volunteer than philanthropy. Photocatalytic Degradation of Toxic Textile Dyes by Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized from Strobilanthes hamiltoniana Leaf Extract
Biocompatible nanoparticle synthesis from Strobilanthes hamiltoniana leaf extracts is an ecologically friendly, cost-effective and long-lasting technique for wastewater treatment, particularly for textile dye degradation. S. hamiltoniana mediated silver nanoparticles (SH-Ag NPs) showed a maximum absorbance of 432 nm. Based on the FESEM analysis, the SH-Ag NPs were usually spherical with an average diameter of nm. The FTIR analyses revealed the significance of functional groups in the formation of SH-Ag NPs. Degradation and rate of degradation for textile dyes after 320 min, SH-Ag NPs displayed 88.4%, 79.49%, 0.0059 min-1 and 0.00495 min-1 for reactive blue 220 (RB-220) and reactive blue 222A (RB-222A) dyes. The phytotoxicity study of SH-Ag NPs treated dye solutions demonstrated a significant decrease in inhibitory efficiency when compared to dye effluents. The biosynthesized SH-Ag NPs could represent a viable catalyst alternative for treating textile dye degradation both before and after it enters aquatic environments. 2024 Asian Publication Corporation. ALLEVIATION OF POVERTY THROUGH PANCHAYAT RAJ INSTITUTIONS: A CRITICAL STUDY OF CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS IN KARNATAKA, INDIA; [REDUO DA POBREZA ATRAV DE INSTITUIES PANCHAYAT RAJ: UM ESTUDO CRICO DOS DESAFIOS E PERSPECTIVAS EM KARNATAKA, DIA]
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to: Analyse the role of Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRIs) in alleviating poverty in Karnataka, India. Identify the challenges faced by PRIs in implementing poverty alleviation programs. Explore potential solutions to overcome these challenges and improve program effectiveness. Provide recommendations for strengthening the role of PRIs in poverty alleviation efforts. Theoretical reference: This paper draws on several theoretical frameworks, including: heories of poverty alleviation, focusing on the role of local governance and community participation. Theories of decentralization and the devolution of power to local governments. Theories of social justice and equity, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of poverty. Theories of sustainable development, highlighting the importance of integrating economic, social, and environmental considerations. Method: This research is primarily a doctrinal study, relying on a variety of primary and secondary sources: Primary Sources: Statutory enactments: Constitution of India, 1950, Central Government Schemes implemented by PRIs, The Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj Act, 1993. Policy documents: National Rural Development Policy, Karnataka State Rural Development Policy, Poverty alleviation scheme guidelines. Secondary Sources: Statistical analysis: Government reports and data sets, Research reports and surveys, Research publications: Peer-reviewed articles and books on poverty alleviation, local governance, and development. Case studies: Examples of successful poverty alleviation programs implemented by PRIs. Results: This research identified several key challenges faced by PRIs in implementing poverty alleviation programs in Karnataka: Corruption: Misuse of funds and resources hinders the effectiveness of programs and prevents benefits from reaching the intended beneficiaries. Caste: Deep-rooted social inequalities limit access to resources and opportunities for marginalized communities. Lack of awareness: Many people remain unaware of available schemes and benefits, leading to underutilization of resources. Limited capacity: PRIs often lack the necessary skills and resources to effectively plan, implement, and monitor programs. Lack of coordination: Poor coordination between different levels of government and stakeholders can lead to delays, duplication of efforts, and inefficient resource allocation. Despite these challenges, the research also identified several promising practices and potential solutions: Transparency and accountability: Initiatives like social audits and public hearings can improve transparency and hold PRI officials accountable for program outcomes. Community participation: Engaging communities in program design and decision-making can ensure programs are relevant and address local needs. Capacity building: Training programs can equip PRI officials with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage programs effectively. Technology and innovation: Utilizing technology can enhance program efficiency, data management, and communication with beneficiaries. Partnerships: Collaborations with NGOs, civil society organizations, and private sector can contribute resources, expertise, and innovation. Conclusion: PRIs play a crucial role in alleviating poverty in India. While they face numerous challenges, there are also promising solutions and opportunities for improvement. Farm bills in the parliament: impact of farmers protest and the democratisation of legislative process in India
This research article analyses the impact of the farmers agitation on the legislative process in India. The Indian farmers protest against the 2020 Indian Agriculture Reform Acts, dubbed as Kala Kanoon (black laws), not only voiced dissatisfaction with the contents of the farm bills but also confronted the undemocratic legislative practices. We provide descriptive evidence by discussing five major dimensions of the impact of the protest and the outcome i.e. the repeal of the laws. First, the protest movement and the resultant repeal helped discern a valuable public policy lesson to abandon top-down policy-making. Second, the protest questioned the bureaucratic approach to legislation that excluded the primary stakeholder group from policy-making. Third, it revealed the diminished role of the legislature and the concentration of power in the executive. Fourth, it exposed vulnerabilities in the parliamentary system when the ruling party holds a brute majority. Fifth, the protest emphasized the importance of state autonomy and legislative accountability to hold the executive accountable. Liberalisation and cashew industry: evidence from India (1965 to 2018)
We examine the impact of liberalisation on production, import, export and area under cultivation of cashew industry in India during 1965 to 2018 period using regression method. We divide data into two sub-periods. The liberalisation and pre-liberalisation period is from 1965 to 1991 and the post-liberalisation period covers the period from 1992 to 2018. We find that cashew production is not influenced post trade liberalisation. This study also finds trade liberalisation has a significant and positive impact on export. Further, we reveal an insignificant impact of liberalisation on import. This study show that the area under cultivation is not changed after the trade liberalisation. 2024 Inderscience Publishers. Advancing Brain Tumor Segmentation in MRI Scans: Hybrid Attention-Residual UNET with Transformer Blocks
Accurate segmentation of brain tumors is vital for effective treatment planning, disease diagnosis, and monitoring treatment outcomes. Post-surgical monitoring, particularly for recurring tumors, relies on MRI scans, presenting challenges in segmenting small residual tumors due to surgical artifacts. This emphasizes the need for a robust model with superior feature extraction capabilities for precise segmentation in both pre-and post-operative scenarios. The study introduces the Hybrid Attention-Residual UNET with Transformer Blocks (HART-UNet), enhancing the U-Net architecture with a spatial self-attention module, deep residual connections, and RESNET50 weights. Trained on BRATS20 and validated on Kaggle LGG and BTC_ postop datasets, HART-UNet outperforms established models (UNET, Attention UNET, UNET++, and RESNET 50), achieving Dice Coefficients of 0.96, 0.97, and 0.88, respectively. These results underscore the models superior segmentation performance, marking a significant advancement in brain tumor analysis across pre-and post-operative MRI scans. 2024 by the authors of this article. -
An empirical analysis of the antecedents and barriers to adopting robo-advisors for investment management among Indian investors
This study aims to provide a research framework to understand the antecedents and barriers to adopting Robo-advisors for investment decision-making in India. The study employed a research model based on the extended UTAUT 2, along with three additional constructs, i.e. personal innovativeness (PI), perceived risk (PR), and technological anxiety (TA). Data collected were analysed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) with the help of SmartPLS 4.0 software. The effect of an environmental education program based on empathy and reflective thinking on preadolescents environmental values and knowledge
As a remedial measure to human-induced climate change, it is imperative to develop intrinsic altruistic values and adequate knowledge of environmental phenomena and behavior to act in favor of the environment. The study aims to assess the effect of an Environmental Education Program (EEP) based on empathy, reflective thinking, and information on preadolescents environmental values and knowledge. For that, a non-equivalent control group design was used. Data collection was done through questionnaires, checklists, and participant thought diaries. Forty-six students (eleven-to-twelve-year-old children) selected through purposive sampling from the sixth standard of two semi-urban schools in Kerala, India, constituted the sample. In the intervention, empathy was manipulated through stories and empathy exercises, reflective thinking through thought diaries, and information on environmental phenomena, issues, and the effect of human actions through stories and knowledge exercises. Empathy, reflective thinking, and information manipulations positively influenced the participants environmental values and knowledge, and the effect manifested in cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions. The study has implications for conducting Environmental Education indoors effectively by integrating affective, cognitive, and metacognitive approaches. Empathy stories can be utilized to address various environmental phenomena and issues. Unveiling stabilization mechanisms in a chaotic fractional Cryosphere model
This article investigates the influence of chaos control and time delay on a chaotic surface energy balance-mass balance model of the Cryosphere. This research delves into the effectiveness of employing the active control method to stabilize chaotic systems with different fractional orders. Moreover, the investigation uncovers a noteworthy aspect of system dynamics, highlighting the role of time delay as a stabilizing element in chaotic systems. The generalized predictor-corrector method has been used to solve the fractional delayed and non-delayed systems. Numerical simulations show that the addition of time lag confers stability to the chaotic model for fractional orders ? = 1 and 0.95. Remarkably, for ? = 0.90, 0.85, 0.80 and 0.75, the delayed model transitions into an asymptotically stable state, revealing the significant stabilizing effect of time delay. As far as the Indian sub-continent is concerned local governance/panchayat has an elaborate history. The rural population have for long practiced this system of governing themselves through their representatives. The mode of working and the powers vested in the local bodies, have not been uniform throughout. The federation conferred constitutional status to the local governance bodies in 1993 and this system has progressed in an interesting way. Karnataka, a southern State in India has been ahead of time in enacting legislations dealing with local governance. Even before the amendment inserting provisions to the Constitution of India was passed, Karnataka had and was implementing extravagant laws pertaining to panchayats. Since democracy and decentralisation are closely associated with the panchayats, the idea of representation has a key role to play. The concerns with respect to involvement and influence of political parties in the local body elections are an important aspect as well. This paper ventures out to understand the panchayat system in Karnataka, pre and post the Constitutional amendment. The paper intends to throw light on the essence of the legislations relating to panchayats in Karnataka and understand the idea of democracy, representational factor and the concept of elections on a non-party basis. The researchers have keenly pondered upon the implementation of apolitical elections in Karnataka, the flaws in the proposed phenomenon. The paper also aims to look into hurdles in the way of these local bodies and propose suggestions to get over the same.
