An ICT-integrated Modular Training Program Enhancing the Digital Research Skills of Research Scholars
The teaching profession in higher education demands strong research skills, and with rapid technological advancements, university teaching professionals must familiarize themselves with digital research skills. Thus, university teachers and PhD research scholars across the globe are eager to develop their digital research skills to enhance their work efficiency. Acquiring digital research skills on the job or during the PhD program has proven to be challenging. These skills assist higher education professionals in various ways, such as supervising doctoral students, conducting research, working on research projects, and publishing research articles. Thus, the present study attempted to provide ICT-integrated modular training (MT) to facilitate the higher education teaching faculty and PhD scholars with digital research skills. The study employed a repeated cross-sectional research design and measured the effectiveness of the MT through a single group pre and post-test design. Researchers conducted three modular training sessions annually on digital research skills over five consecutive years. In total, 300 scholars attended the training and participated in the pre-test, post-test, and satisfaction survey. Findings from paired sample t-tests (t-value varied between 4.117 to 7.525, p < 0.05) revealed that modular training has been significantly effective with a large effect size (d > 0.8). Furthermore, the satisfaction survey revealed a high degree of satisfaction among participants. Future research may explore ways to strengthen the technological and pedagogical content knowledge of modular training programs in developing digital research skills. The introduction chapter presents the transition that teaching internship models underwent from the 20th century to the 21st century. The previous chapter dealt with important templates useful for carrying out internships. The present chapter attempts to provide certain guidelines for carrying out internships. These guidelines might help those involved in organising teaching internships at schools. Understanding the steps of organising and deliberations on each stage of the internship process helps the stakeholders reap maximum benefit from the internship. SAMPLE TEMPLATES FOR ORGANIZING TEACHING INTERNSHIP
The previous chapter discussed assessment in internship, while this chapter introduces various templates for such assessments and presentations in teaching internship. There are various tasks provided to preservice teachers, such as making reflections, observations, and lesson plans. These tasks are evaluated during the completion of the internship. A rubric for this evaluation is also provided in this chapter. The chapter also provides templates for a permission letter seeking leave and a template for successful completion of internship. TEACHING INTERNSHIP IN INDIA
The chapter provides a detailed account of the evolution of education at different time periods from the Vedic, Buddhism, and Mughals to the present day, exploring any presence of teacher education. However, the official teacher education institutes were opened during the pre-independence era under British rule. The number of institutes has increased over the years with the reformation of numerous educational policies, such as the National Education Policy and Commissions (Kothari Commission, Mudaliar Commission, The University Education Commission, etc.). The chapter also offers insights into the emergence of internships, the regulating body for teacher education in India, and their significance, along with the requisites for a teacher in India. India is one of the largest youth-populated countries in the world. Technological advancements during and post-COVID have gifted most youth with personal computers/smartphones and internet connectivity at an affordable price. Thus, binge-watching social media has become the order of the day. Youths are excessively interested in building fit-looks for their psychosocial well-being. However, it has adversely changed their life routine and academic performance. Thus, the present study attempted to measure the relationship between their motivation to fit looks and academic performance in the presence of mediating variables like physical exercise, sleeping, and eating patterns. The study surveyed 300 UG students attending physical exercise or gym classes. The study employed mediation analysis to find the relationship. Results revealed a total and indirect effect between motivation to fit looks and academic performance in the presence of mediating variables, explaining the full mediation effect. The study warrants future researchers to explore the reasons for these relationships with a qualitative approach and identify plausible suggestions to improve youths psychosocial well-being. 2024 Universidade Estadual de Maringa. Social media disorder in relation to device screen time and autosuggested social media content engagement; [Zislost zp?soben?asem stren na socinh sh v souvislosti s automaticky generovan obsahem na socinh sh]
Though emerging technology offers people a comfortable life, a few adverse effects also exist. There was a rapid increase in mobile phone usage and internet consumption during and post the Covid-19 pandemic, which reached the extent of addiction among youths. Thus, this study examines social media disorder among adolescents in relation to the time spent on a computer or smart-phone device screen and engaging in autosuggested social media content. The study included 235 responses from students in higher secondary schools of Bangalore, India. The study found a significant positive correlation between device screen time, autosuggested social media content engagement (ASMCE), and social media disorder. Multiple regression analysis indicated that 56.5% of social media disorder among adolescents is due to the time spent on a computer or smart phone device and autosuggested social media content engagement. The study did not measure any differences in social media disorder based on the demographic details of the study participants. As social media disorder affects the mental health of adolescents, especially in post pandemic times, and further affects their academic performance, the researchers suggest that future studies explore the other factors causing social media disorder. 2023 The Authors. -
Student engagement in online learning during COVID-19
Online teaching and learning have become the novel norm amidst COVID-19 pandemic crisis across the world. The educational institutions across the world have switched to online mode of instruction to continue to provide education. Thus, research on effectiveness of online teaching and factors affecting the students engagement in a virtual classroom has gained importance. Students during pandemic are learning at home and lack motivation and confidence in their academic life. The present study aimed to analyze the student engagement and the factors that affect the student engagement in online learning environment. The study employed a quantitative research design to collect data from 600 students attending online classes in schools and colleges of Bangalore, India. The study found that there is a positive correlation between students intrinsic motivation and student engagement. Student engagement increases as the academic pressure or tension decreases. The core findings of the study showed that interest towards learning, perceived competence, and perceived choice of students determines student engagement in online classroom. Almost 33.7 % variance in student engagement is because of students intrinsic motivation. Future researchers may explore external factors affecting student engagement. Is robotics education and training gender dependent? A suggestive robotics syllabus for teacher training
Application of robotics is rapidly increasing in all fields of life. Though robotics education became popular in the 21st century, its teaching and training has not gained much importance across the world, especially in developing and low-income countries. There are various reasons for its neglect and one of them could be gender-science stereotypes. Research studies are yet to explore the reasons for its slow emergence. The present study explores the need and training for educational robotics considering the role of students, teachers, teacher-educators and parents, determining whether it is gender-dependent or not. The study also proposes to come up with a syllabus for robotics training. The study employs exploratory, sequential, qualitative-quantitative mixed-method research design and applies purposive sampling techniques. Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews, including five science teacher-educators, five science teachers, and five trainee teachers majoring in sciences to understand the need, scope and benefits of robotics education. They recruited 100 high school students, 50 teacher-educators, and 100 parents to test whether their interest in robotics is gender-dependent through Chi-square analysis. The study revealed the need for robotics education under four themes and seven subthemes. It has been found that the interest of students and parents and the readiness of teacher-educators for robotics education is gender-dependent. The study came up with a suggestive syllabus for robotics training. It recommends that future researchers should focus on the implementation of robotics teaching for teacher and school education. 2021 Authors. -

Lived Experiences, Challenges, and Coping Mechanisms of Undergraduate Students on Cybersecurity in Digital Environments
Higher education students use digital devices for learning, entertainment, and financial transactions. The present study examines undergraduate (UG) students challenges faced in cyber security space amid digital environments. The study employed a qualitative research design with a narrative inquiry method to capture the lived experiences, challenges, and coping mechanism of UG students through semi structured interviews. The researchers analyzed the qualitative data of ten UG students using the inductive thematic analysis method. UG students shared overall that they face varied experiences, multiple challenges, and cope with cyber security issues in multiple ways. Findings from the study led to recommendations for stakeholders, which includes designing higher education classes in a more secure way. Flipped Classroom Strategy in Online Teaching: Challenges Faced by Higher Education Teachers
Flipped classroom model has gained increasing interest among university teachers in recent years [1] (Stohr et al.). The reason for its popularity is attributed to its bearing on Vygotskys constructivism theory and for the student centered approach [2] (Ziling Xu et al.). Countries in the world are affected by COVID-19 including India. Hence higher education institutes have begun their online classes. Flipped classroom teaching has been quite prevalent in Indian higher education recently. Online class initiation from higher education institutes in India has pushed faculty members to teach online and faculty have begun flipped classroom teaching online. Flipped classroom teaching in online differs from the face to face mode. There are challenges and issues while using flipped classroom in online mode by the faculty members of higher education. This leads to the present study to find out the challenges of flipped classroom teaching in online mode by teachers of higher education. The present study adopted qualitative research method. Structured interviews and focus group discussion were conducted to answer the research question. Study was able to discuss the challenges of flipped classroom in online mode. Innovative instructional strategies that motivate students to learn during the pandemic
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread all over the world affecting public health at the outset of 2020. This has slowed down almost every sector of human life including education. However, few of the private educational institutes have risen to the occasion immediately and have continued providing education online. Teachers were forced to adapt themselves to teach online. Students started to attend online classes from home. Inevitably, parents had to invest in purchasing computers or smartphones and internet connections to support their children's education. Though all these changes began with an overwhelming spirit from all stakeholders, in no time it has become a monotony. This has led to the present study to find innovative instructional strategies that can motivate learners to learn and sustain interest in learning during pandemics. Covid-19 and school management
The breakout of COVID-19 from Wuhan, China has shaken the world economy, giving a traumatic experience to people across the world. Most of the countries have locked down their business enterprises. Schools have started teaching online, and teachers have moved to online teaching in no time. School managers are making quick decisions on various challenges faced by their schools. These uncertain conditions have led to the present study. The present study explores the impact of COVID-19 on various dimensions of school management, such as finance, infrastructure, staff training, student enrollment, student retention, student welfare activities, co-curricular activities, and challenges and opportunities; how to maintain efficiency amidst COVID-19 pandemic; and how to reduce the pandemic effect in schools. This research employed the phenomenological qualitative method to address the research problems. The data was collected from the semi-structured online interview and review of related literature.
