- Description
- Urban planners face a growing need for efficient, smart, and sustainable projects. One of the dynamic urban elements of cities is its streets, which accommodate the majority of the public realm. This study aims to identify sustainable materials that are employed in the construction of urban streets and analyze the potential for other sustainable materials in future street design. We conduct a thorough literature review through case studies and identify sustainable materials currently in use in the construction of urban streets across the world. This study focuses on existing and potential sustainable materials for urban streets suitable for Qatar. Hence, the objectives of this study are: (1) to identify sustainable materials in the construction of urban streets; (2) to analyze challenges to using sustainable materials in making urban streets more sustainable; (3) comparative analysis of the case studies. The study concludes with sustainable urban street design guidelines derived from Qatar. 2025 Elsevier Ltd.
