Counseling and Psychotherapy in India: Radha's Story
This chapter discusses the case of Radha, who presented with depression and infertility. The focus of counseling was to alleviate Radha's psychological distress, help her redefine her identity, and explore alternatives to infertility in the individual and marital context. The counselor's suggestion to use traditional healing practices, especially Pranayama, greatly helped the client, as she used these practices as for preventive coping. Handling the sensitive issue of infertility was challenging for the counselor, especially dealing with the ingrained cultural resistance to infertility and the client's value system that contributed to her own psychological state. Classical approaches to counseling and psychotherapy are indeed useful but require contextualization and an understanding of eclectic practice. Along with eclectic practice, integration of alternative systems of care, such as traditional healing practices, is seen as essential in the practice of counseling and psychotherapy in India. 2015 by the American Counseling Association. Countering educational disruptions through an inclusive approach: Bridging the digital divide in distance education
The COVID-19 pandemic has created havoc across the globe, irrespective of governments, industries, and societies. The education sector is one of the most extensively affected by the global health crisis, manifesting expansive negative consequences to learners from various age groups and socioeconomic statuses. Despite the predicaments posed by the pandemic, academic institutions continue to provide education through a distance learning approach. However, the educational disruptions have underscored the lack of digital resources and competencies, excluding poor and unconnected students. Likewise, transitioning to remote education exposed the digital divide and inequalities that have been neglected for a long time. If the ultimate objective is to provide distance education, it is vital to devise solutions to problems faced by underprivileged students. CovalentOrganic Frameworks (COF): An Advanced Generation of Reticular Organic Polymers for Energy and Environmental Applications
Over the past decade, nanoporous materials have caught strong attention among the scientific community due to their tremendous potential in real-world applications. This chapter introduces one such group of nanoporous materials called Covalent Organic Frameworks or simply COFs. Here, we briefly covered the overview of synthesis of COFs and their post-synthetic modifications employing different linkages boron, imine, triazine linkages, etc. High porosity with adjustable periodic pores, well-defined structures, and tunable skeletons are some of the key properties of COFs. In account of such advantages COFs have been scientifically researched in applications like adsorption, separation, energy storage devices, sensing, and especially in degrading various pollutants like heavy metals As, Cd, Cr, Cu; radionuclides UO 2 2+, TcO 4 ?, Nd 3 +, I 2; organic waste dyes, pharmaceutical waste, organo-phosphorous retardants, etc. This chapter specifically describes the current advancement of COFs in segregating hazardous chemicals by sorption methods. One such example is heavy metal sorption in trace amounts from water which otherwise can pose a great threat to human health if not removed completely. Some of these ions include UO 2 2+. By utilizing weak chemical interactions for dye confinement within COF pores, industrial sewage water can be made dye free. ?-conjugated backbones found in aromatic COFs could function as a signal transducer, or active functional groups evenly spaced could act as a receptor, and the uniform pores can serve as mass transfer inducer/enhancers. As a result, COFs can facilitate facile and smooth ion transport by the virtue of redox activities within COF pores. This makes COF a robust and efficient material for energy applications particularly in designing batteries and supercapacitors. Thus, COFs could act as a potential electrodes both anode and cathode for energy storage devices. The current chapter also highlights the development in the field of environmental applications using COF materials. COVID-19 and Mental Health of Indian Youth: Association with Background Variables and Stress
The coronavirus has become a public health concern of the decade, affecting the economic, social, and psychological stability of the whole world. Having understood the detrimental impact of the pandemic to the mental health of people of all age groups, youth is understood to be the most vulnerable population who receives its direct impact. The broad objective was to study the mental health status of Indian youth and its association with various demographic variables. Psychological stress and mental health was another relationship that was explored. A group of 317 participants between the age group of 19 to 29 voluntarily took part in the online survey. Gender was found to be associated with overall mental health status (p < 0.01) as well its correlates, namely anxiety (p < 0.05), depression (p < 0.05), and loss of behavioral control (p < 0.01). Association between age and loss of positive affect (p < 0.05), number of siblings and loss of behavioral control (p < 0.01), and family environment and overall mental health scores (p < 0.001) were found. Similarly, feeling of restlessness during lockdown (p < 0.001), availability of support (p < 0.001), and feeling the need to consult a mental health professional were associated with the overall mental health score as well as all its sub-scales. Further, there were strong negative correlations between psychological stress and overall mental health scores, as well as that of anxiety, depression, and loss of behavioral control and positive affect sub-scales. The study highlighted the need for psychological support services for the youth population of the country to cope with and adapt to the new situation. Covid-19 and school management
The breakout of COVID-19 from Wuhan, China has shaken the world economy, giving a traumatic experience to people across the world. Most of the countries have locked down their business enterprises. Schools have started teaching online, and teachers have moved to online teaching in no time. School managers are making quick decisions on various challenges faced by their schools. These uncertain conditions have led to the present study. The present study explores the impact of COVID-19 on various dimensions of school management, such as finance, infrastructure, staff training, student enrollment, student retention, student welfare activities, co-curricular activities, and challenges and opportunities; how to maintain efficiency amidst COVID-19 pandemic; and how to reduce the pandemic effect in schools. This research employed the phenomenological qualitative method to address the research problems. The data was collected from the semi-structured online interview and review of related literature. COVID-19 Effects on Learning Behaviour of Tourism Students for Sustainable Education: The Malaysian Context
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the alarming spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) began to shock the world on 31 December 2019, and it was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei, in China when a patient presented with pneumonia. To date, the virus has recorded over 2,088,663 cases worldwide. The impact of COVID-19 would be precisely worrying as it aggravated not only tourism but also the learning behaviour of tourism students. What are the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the learning behaviour of tourism students? What lessons could be learned to make it more sustainable for the students? And finally, what would be the suggested resilient strategies for the tourism students in the post-pandemic era? There is no original study conducted to focalise investigation on revealing the negative characteristics of COVID-19 and the learning curve of university students in Malaysia. However, the main objectives of this chapter are to provide an overview of the effects of COVID-19 in the learning behaviour of tourism students for sustainable education and the factors that distress students minds and how these helped students to share the positive aspects with others. It is gradually visible that the effects of COVID-19 on learning behaviour and dangers to university students in Malaysia and their significance on students emotional change or learning behaviours are not well perceived. COVID-19 pandemic, risk-reduction strategies and crisis management in the travel insurance sector
Travel has always been considered to be a risky affair as there are multiple uncertainties associated with it. Though the tourism industry has developed sophisticated methods to manage these risks, there are still certain uncontrollable and unforeseen circumstances that might affect the physical, emotional, and mental state of travellers. The result would be a huge financial burden for the traveller and increased frustration towards the tour operator. The concept of travel insurance was introduced to relieve travellers of such unforeseen risks while travelling. Moreover, the Covid 19 pandemic has instilled a sense of fear and doubt among the minds of travellers which affects their travel decision-making to a large extent. Destinations and tourism suppliers have introduced various risk reduction strategies and methods to resolve this issue. Covid-19 pandemic: How do the family businesses in India cope with the crisis?
The Covid-19 pandemic brought about a major economic breakdown throughout the world due to the shutting down of businesses and organizations. Covid-19 took a toll on India also, the second-most populous country. In India, family-run businesses are the deep-rooted, oldest, and most widespread form of business ownership. Most family businesses, while keeping the welfare of their customers, employees, and communities in mind, have resorted to remote work and halting non-essential work. The government of India took measures mainly consisting of an increased moratorium period, corporate tax cuts, lower interest on delayed tax payments, extension in return filing deadline, and other policy decisions. This study discusses the impact of Covid-19 on family businesses and how family businesses cope with the shock to the system. Crafting an experiencescape for sustainable cultural tourism: A case study of udaipur's craft village "Shilpgram"
India, known for its rich and varied cultural heritage, hosts numerous fairs and festivals as vibrant platforms to showcase its diversity. Events like the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Ellora-Ajanta International Festival, Surajkund Crafts Mela, Pushkar Fair, and many others celebrate the country's artistic and cultural wealth. This book chapter explores sustainable culture and heritage development in Udaipur's craft village, 'Shilpgram.' The village hosts an annual craft fair during the peak tourist season, attracting artists across India to showcase their unique crafts, folk dances, and paintings. This chapter assesses Shilpgram's feasibility as an experiencescape model using a case study method. Interviews with key stakeholders provided insight into the destination's difficulties, strengths, and best practices. Creativity Education in India: Breaking Barriers
Classrooms in India are posed with challenges of rigid curriculum demands, lack of resources, large class sizes and very often low motivation levels among teachers. Add to that poor teacher training facilities. Given the constraints, the pursuit of encouraging creativity education in the Indian schooling system seems like a tall order. The aim of this chapter is to explore the scope for creative learning and expression in Indian classrooms. The purpose is also to search for education models that facilitate and encourage creativity amongst children by adapting the curriculum to their advantage and operate within the constraints imposed by systemic drawbacks. The chapter searches for a coherent, pragmatic definition of creativity among practitioners and pedagogues with the rationale of identifying workable solutions for dissemination of creativity education in Indian classrooms. The methodology entails conversations and interviews with teachers, curriculum planners and pedagogues representing different education models and schooling systems in India. A case-study design approach is assumed to present programs that are successfully implementing practices which encourage creativity learning among their students. An attempt is made to highlight the philosophical beliefs that underlie adoption of such practices as well as to document the challenges and demands that such an endeavour imposes on the system. The chapter therefore, provides an optimistic view of the future of out of the box learning not only in the Indian classrooms but also makes a case for all education systems stifled by curriculum constraints and lack of resources. CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing of crops: Food and nutritional security
The United Nations established the goal of achieving global food security by 2030 as one of its top sustainable development goals in 2015. The current agricultural harvest is insufficient to accomplish the zero-hunger objective and feed the world's growing population. It would require more extensive and consistent crop production. Gene-editing technologies have recently emerged as viable alternatives to permit precise modifications in genomes with increased efficiency and yield higher agricultural productivity. Due to their simplicity, adaptability, and reproducibility across a diverse variety of species, genetic engineering techniques like CRISPR-Cas9 have become quite prominent. CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology can improve crop yields, quality, stress resistance, food safety, nutritional security, and shelf-life, reduce antibiotic resistance, and hasten plant domestication. Cutting-edge techniques like genome editing (GE) allow for the precise introduction or mutation of specified genes into plant genomes. The advent of programmable nucleases like CRISPR-Cas9 has improved gene editing and potentially improved food production and nutritional security. Knock-out, knock-in, gene activation, gene repression, nuclear rearrangements, base editing, molecular breeding, and epigenome engineering are just a few ways that CRISPR systems can target and change genes. For novel applications in plant genetic engineering, CRISPR-Cas systems can be repurposed for GE toward de-novo speciation; mitochondrial and plastid genome engineering toward enhancing photosynthesis, submergence, and drought tolerance. Critical Analysis of MoS2-Based Systems for Textile Wastewater Treatment
Indiscriminate discharge of toxic organic contaminant-laden wastewater into water bodies is one of the major issues posing a risk to the environment in general and aquatic living systems in particular. Widely used textile dyes are ubiquitous in the effluents emanating from industries. Photocatalysts, due to their efficiency and eco-friendliness, can be effectively used to remove pollutant dyes from the water bodies. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), an emerging co-catalyst, has high photocatalytic activity, strong absorptivity, non-toxicity, and low cost; with a graphene-like structure, it offers functional features similar to graphene: high charge carrier transfer, strong wear resistance, and good mechanical strength. However, in aspects such as cost, abundance, versatile morphologies, and tunable band gap with efficient visible light absorption properties, MoS2 scores over graphene. The present chapter discusses the recent advances in nanostructured MoS2 materials for applications in environmental remediation. Special emphasis has been paid to MoS2 and MoS2-based systems for the photocatalytic degradation of various organic contaminants such as malachite green, methyl orange, rhodamine B, and methylene blue that find extensive use in the textile industry. As a result, MoS2 systems play an essential role in nanocomposites, especially in speeding up photo-induced electron transport and lowering electron recombination rates, making them desirable photocatalysts for the degradation of pollutants.
