Nanotechnological approach in nutraceuticals
Nanonutraceuticals are a fabrication process for extending the food quality and shelf life using nanocomposites for the protection of nutrition supplements in food, which acts as encapsulation against the factors causing spoilage. This chapter discusses the advantages of nanotechnology in food processing, packaging, and post packaging. The use of nanomaterials as ingredients, packaging materials, and for processing packed food imparts better taste, texture, and consistency. Nanotechnology improves the flavor, taste, and has better delivery of culinary balance. Encapsulation in food packaging helps maintain the taste and odor by maintaining the permeability of packaging, food texture, and the matrix, while regulating the specific release of active agents at a specific rate and time. Thus, a nanopackaging delivery system helps maintain the moisture and temperature. The impact of the use of nanomaterials should be studied under various circumstances to help understand nanomaterial use to deliver bioactive compounds. 2024 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Rethinking growth for long-term welfare: A case for circular economy transition in the tourism sector in Nepal
The construct of Circular Economy (CE) is emerging as an alternate to the existing linear "extraction-use-disposal" economic model. CE concept emphasises the significance of sustaining the value of resources like materials and products within the economy, lessening waste generation, thereby enhancing sustainability. The pandemic crisis has offered a rare prospect to pause and ruminate on crucial anxieties about the future prospects of the tourism industry, together with issues related to overall resilience, undesirable environmental and social impacts, opportunities, and risks amidst the emerging sustainability challenges. Over-tourism, GHG emissions and biosphere degradation problems will not automatically recede post-pandemic when the 'normalcy' returns. Principally, these challenges have to be dynamically addressed so as to rebuild a tourism industry that is economically and environmentally sustainable and more resilient. This paper aims to understand the need and implications of the shift of the tourism industry to the circular economy model. An attempt is made to examine the prospect of Nepal transitioning into a CE so that there is a well-balanced and restorative accomplishment from economic and environmental standpoints. 2024 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Agro-food traceability with efficient user interface using blockchain technology
Food traceability is crucial for food quality and safety to reduce vulnerabilities of product globalization. The traditional Agri-food production system does not offer easy traceability of the product at any point of the supply chain. Blockchain based production system resolves the challenges by reducing the complexity of traceability. Still no other study has presented Blockchain-based traceability platform with a lower impact on the environment and lower cost for each transaction sent by the supply chain. In the existing system, proof of work consensus protocol is used in blockchain which consumes more energy for transactions. The proposed traceability system is based on Ethereum Blockchain, which uses the Proof-of-Stake mechanism of consensus that requires minimal computational power, is highly scalable and environmentally sustainable. The user interface of consumer is specially designed that provides all the tracking information of the agro-food. The developed traceability platform digitizes the entire production chain making the data immutable and available in realtime. 2024 by IGI Global. -
Generative AI and its impact on creative thinking abilities in higher education institutions
Generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT have started gaining increased popularity among higher education institutions. Students, as well as teaching professionals, can utilize these tools for various academic purposes due to the immense benefits they provide by way of customization of data generated and ease of access to data. However, this chapter seeks to analyze how such tools may impact students' creative thinking ability. It also analyses the drawbacks faced by teachers after implementation of such tools. The methodology adopted for the study was two surveys: one administered to gather students' opinions and the other for understanding teachers' perspectives. The analysis of the data collected shows that the over-reliance of students on such generative AI tools might hinder students' ability to think creatively to some extent. The chapter also suggests some of the strategies that can be adopted by teachers to ensure students' capabilities are assessed accurately. 2024, IGI Global. All rights reserved. -
Exploring artificial intelligence techniques for diabetic retinopathy detection: A case study
There is a notable increase in the prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) globally. This increase is caused due to type2 diabetes, diabetes mellitus (DM). Among people, diabetes leads to vision loss or Diabetic Retinopathy. Early detection is very much necessary for timely intervention and appropriate treatment on vision loss among diabetic patients. This chapter explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods are helpful in automated detection of diabetic retinopathy. In this chapter deep learning algorithm is proposed that is used to extract important features from retinal images and classify the images to identify the presence of DR. The model is evaluated using various metrics like specificity, sensitivity etc. The results of the case study provide an AI driven solution to existing methods used to identify DR and this can improve the early detection and appropriate treatment at the right time. 2024, IGI Global.
