Study of Three-Dimensional Mapping of Interstellar Extinction in Milky Way Galaxy
The Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) is scheduled to be launched as a part of the ASTROSAT satellite. As part of the mission planning for the instrument we have studied the efficacy of UVIT observations for interstellar extinction measurements. We find that in the best case scenario, the UVIT can measure the reddening to an accuracy of about 0.02 magnitudes, which combined with the derived distances to the stars, will enable us to model the three-dimensional distribution of extinction in our Galaxy. The knowledge of the distribution of the ISM will then be used to study distant objects, affected by it. This work points the way to further refining the UVIT mission plan to best satisfy different science studies. newlineWe report here on our plans to use data from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard the ASTROSAT mission to probe the extinction across the entire sky. This mission has been in develonment since 2000 (Agrawal 2001) and is expected to be launched on a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 2013. The UVIT instrument is being developed at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) and includes three telescopes, two in the ultraviolet (FUV and NUV) and one in the visible, each including a filter wheel with a number of different filters (Kumar et al. 2012). We have run a series of simulations to determine which filters are best suited for our purpose and will use these results in planning our observations with the UVIT. -
Rayleigh-benard and benard-marangoni convection in micropolar fluid
We study in this thesis, Rayleigh-Bard and Bard-Marangoni convection in a micropolar fluid. We study the effects of temperature modulation at the boundary and gravity modulation in the presence of porous medium. The effects of rotation and internal heat generation are also investigated and results are presented graphically and discussed qualitatively. The problem presented in this thesis throws light on externally controlled internal convection in a micropolar fluid. These problems have many possible applications in geophysics, astrophysics, oceanography engineering and in space situations with g-jitter connected with gravity stimulation study. With this motivation, we examine in this thesis five problems and their summary is given below one by one. (i) THE EFFECT OF IMPOSED TIME-PERIODIC BOUNDARY TEMPERATURE AND POROUS MEDIUM ON THE ONSET OF RAYLEIGH-BARD CONVECTION IN A MICROPOLAR FLUID The analysis of buoyancy driven convection in a micropolar fluid saturated porous layer heated from below and subject to temperature modulation is presented. In addition to a steady temperature difference between the walls of the porous layer, a time-dependent periodic perturbation is applied to the wall temperatures. The small amplitude of the modulation is used to compute the critical Rayleigh number and critical wave number. Three cases of the oscillating temperature field are examined: (a) symmetric, so that the wall temperatures are modulated in phase, (b) asymmetric, corresponding to out-of-phase modulation, and (c) only the bottom wall is modulated. Possibilities of the occurrence of subcritical instabilities are also discussed. The shift in the critical Rayleigh number is calculated as a function of frequency and it is found that it is possible to advance or delay the onset of convection by time modulation of the wall temperatures. Role of employee value proposition in creating employer brand value for employee attraction and retention
Employee Value Proposition is a set of associations and offerings provided by an organisation in return for the skills, capabilities and experiences an employee brings to the organisation. Employee newlineexpectations from the employer is now shifted from monetary to more intrinsic values like rewards, recognition, and flexible work. newlineUnderstanding the value proposition is vital to devise appropriate human resource strategies for employee attraction and retention. Human resource managers have realised that the communicating the value propositions to the employees is as important as devising them. This has led human newlineresource managers to collaborate with marketing team to develop right newlinecommunicating strategies to build a lucrative employer brand to attract right talent into the organisation. Previous studies lack focus on dual outcomes of employer brand. The current study develops an employer brand for internal employees and potential employees. Although the value proposition components remain same for both category of employees, the order of preference differs. The study has used structured questionnaire to newlineunderstand the order of preference of value proportion components for internal and potential employees among generation X, Y and Z. The findings assist human resource managers to use the developed framework newlineto identify the value proposition preferred and develop and communicate the Employee Value Proposition accordingly. The theoretical contribution includes proposing differentiated Employer Brand framework for internal and potential employees. -
Effect of personality psychological capital institutional support on job satisfaction and affective commitment among private school teachers in south karnataka
A teacher's personality traits are important to create and maintain a classroom learning environment. The behaviour of Teachers depends on the characteristics of the personality. There have been many pieces of research based on the positive aspects of teachers' behaviour through enhancing some psychological states which are based on the positive institutional behaviour. This particular research has its focus on the positive strengths of the teachers, and this construct has an essential influence on job satisfaction. Hence, a satisfied and engaged teacher is very much necessary to strengthen the competitive student base of every School. To explore the fact, the researcher has chosen the constructs such as Personality, Positive psychological capital, Institutional factors (Perceived Institutional support, Work-life policies, Work autonomy), Job satisfaction factors, and Affective commitment to study the impact of the Big five dimensions of personality on job satisfaction and affective commitment of private school teachers in South Karnataka and to investigate the impact of psychological capital on job satisfaction and affective commitment of teachers. The study also attempts to understand the influence of Institutional factors (perceived Institutional support, work-life policies, and work autonomy) on job satisfaction and affective commitment. Also, the study explores the influence of job satisfaction on the outcome factors namely affective commitment among private school teachers. The study used a descriptive research design, and it is observed that the total number of districts in south Karnataka is fifteen. The researcher selected four private schools from each district randomly with the help of the private school list used as a sampling frame. The total sample size for the study estimated were 477 teachers working in private schools. The study has analysed the data using appropriate statistical tools such as (i) frequency analysis, (ii) Factor analysis, (iii) ANOVA with post hoc (v) Regression analysis. The study concludes that when the private school teachers personalities such as extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience which will tend to significantly influence Job satisfaction among teachers working in the private schools of South Karnataka. Similarly, private school teachers Psychological capital like resilience, self-efficacy, optimism, and hope which tend to influence job satisfaction at their work significantly. This study also concludes that private school teachers to be given proper work-life balance and work autonomy by the school management, which will significantly influence job satisfaction among the teachers at work. Also, private school teachers who possess personalities such as extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience significantly influence the teacher's affective commitment. The study also reveals that the private school teachers have Psychological capital like resilience, Self-efficacy, Hope, and Optimism, which tend to significantly influence their affective commitment which will reflect towards their respective institution. If the private institution gave the school teachers proper work-life balance and work autonomy, then they tend to influence their affective commitment significantly. Also, it is concluded that the affective commitment of teachers significantly influences the job satisfaction level of school teachers. This implies that the school management can enhance the level of teachers' commitment to their schools by creating a more conducive and more satisfying environment in the workplace. Accordingly, schools can decide on pay and other monetary incentives. However, they can enhance teachers' job satisfaction by creating better training and development opportunities, improving leadership and management support, promoting accountability, and involving teachers in decision-making made at the school level. Another important finding of this study is the observed positive relationships between scores of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Some of these findings contradict the existing literature in these fields; others are inconsistent with the prevailing literature. -
Impact of functional inter dependency on employee satisfaction with performance appraisal in real estate industry
Earlier researches have consistently underlined an intrinsic proportionate relationship between the success of an organization and the effort put in by the employees towards the attainment of the set goals for success. An employee with a higher level of job satisfaction tends to be more positively disposed and productive in the work place, than the opposite of it. A positively charged wok atmosphere contributes much to the overall growth of an organization and is the result of the satisfaction newlinelevel enjoyed by employees. One major factor that determines employee satisfaction is the organization s system in place to reward and recognise the employee through performance appraisal. Genuine unbiased performance appraisal tends to bolster the performance of employees. Thus, performance appraisal is one of the most widely researched areas in newlineindustrial/organizational psychology (Murphy and Cleveland, 1995). Recent studies among employees indicate several inadequacies with the current performance appraisal system in use as it does not measure the performance in all directions. Thus, there seems to be a gap that needs exploration. Employee s deliverables depend on external and internal newlinefactors. Functional interdependence is one such internal factor which influences the performance of the employee. However, there is limited knowledge available on the role of interdependency factors in the performance of the employee during the performance review. This article presents a conceptual framework to understand the role of functional newlineinterdependence in the performance appraisal and the satisfaction of the employee whose deliverables are highly functional interdependence. The framework proposes the relationship between the functional newlineinterdependence in the job, fairness in the performance appraisal by considering that interdependence and subsequently the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of the employee in performance appraisal. -
Determinants of consumer product return behavior with respect to online shopping of apparels
This research aims at finding the determinants of consumer product return newlinebehavior with respect to online shopping of apparel in Bangalore city. The study was administered to 600 respondents, and the response received was from 465 respondents. The convenience sampling method was used to collect samples across Bangalore city. Product return behavior was measured using a newlinefive-point Likert scale for 34 items. The literature review was conducted extensively, covering both Indian and international context. This research is designed to address the literature gaps. Many hypotheses were proposed in the thesis and were examined using structural equation modeling. The hypotheses were tested with the software newlineAMOS 25 and SPSS 25 to fulfill the research objectives. Confirmatory factor analysis was done on the data to confirm the instrument reliability and validity. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to verify the constructs developed from the detailed literature review. ANOVA post hoc test was done to check the relationship among the demographic variables. Descriptive statistics were used newlineto interpret the data. With the help of structural equation modeling, the causal newlinerelationship between the dependent variable and the independent variables were identified. The study on the determinants of product return behavior has provided a lot of newlineinsights. Customer attitude has a significant and negative impact on product return behavior. The customers with a positive attitude towards online apparel purchases will be less likely to return products. The previous customer experience and their consumption pattern have a significant and negative impact on product return behavior. The customers with a bad experience with newlinebuying online apparel products, tend to return their products more. The perceived risk of online apparel purchases has a significant and positive impact on product return behavior. The customers with a high perceived risk of online apparel purchases will be more likely to return their products. -
Sustainable tourism management : Issues and challenges of eco wildlife resorts in karnataka
Sustainable tourism principles comprise of visitor satisfaction, the economic newlinesustainability of the industry, environment conservation, socio-cultural and economic newlinedevelopment of local communities. The tourism industry has to consider all these elements while developing any form of tourism for its long-term sustainability. Eco and wildlife resorts are one of the prominent and attractive segments of the accommodation sector. It has a major implication for implementing sustainable tourism practices in their daily operations since they are set close to nature and reside in pristine wildlife regions. It is inevitable for eco and wildlife tourism, to consider all newlinethe elements of sustainable tourism practices and to implement it in their day to day newlineactivities. At the same time, they might have to face issues and challenges in newlineimplementing sustainable practices. So, the main objective of the research is to newlineunderstand operational issues and challenges of eco and wildlife resorts in achieving newlinesustainable tourism principles. The purpose of the study is to investigate the issues and challenges faced by eco and wildlife resorts in implementing sustainable tourism practices and understanding the indicators used by the resorts to measure their sustainable tourism newlinepractices. The scope of the study covers selected eco and wildlife resorts in Karnataka because most eco and wildlife reserve areas are shared by pristine natural areas and are located near villages. The targeted respondents of the study are eco and wildlife resort managers and visitors of eco and wildlife resorts. Based on purposive sampling, 30 resorts are selected for the study, and 410 visitors are selected based on convenient sampling technique. The study employs a mixed-method research design. newlineTriangulation design is used in the study. The study adopted a tool to identify the newlinesustainable tourism indicators used by the resorts to measuring their sustainable newlinetourism practices. -
Tribal population and skill development programme : A study of idukki district in kerala
India is a country which has people of different cultures, religions, traditions, newlinelanguages, castes and creed. In the democratic country of India, tribal people are one of the groups keeping their own culture and tradition that needs to be emphasized. The significant characteristics of the tribes are primitive traits, geographic isolation, distinct culture, shyness of contact and economically backwardness. By and large, tribes are living in different geo-climatic and ecological conditions covering from forest and plains to hills and the area lack accessibility. Though they are considered as the marginalized or most vulnerable population in India, their way of life and tradition, culture is to be preserved and they should be brought into the mainstream of society. In order to uplift the tribal community to be a part of the mainstream of society, the development of their skills is very essential. Skill development is the driving force for the transformation and development of an economy. The Government of India has taken several steps and launched many skill development newlineschemes along with other welfare schemes for the betterment of the mainstream as well as the tribal communities in India. .Keeping this objective in mind, in the 12thfive-year plan, the government of India gave the highest priority to skill development. The National Policy on Skill Development was announced by the cabinet of India (2009) to make a workforce with the strong skills knowledge and accepted qualification framework which will help to enhance the competitiveness of India and to get a decent job in the global market(IBEF, 2013). But many factors prevent the scheduled tribes from becoming beneficiaries of various skill development programs provided by the government. In the above context, this study is an attempt to know the nature and effectiveness of various skill development programs offered to the tribal community. -
Actulization of the educational vision of kuriakose elias chavara through providing higher educational of facilities in the formation of human capital in CMI and CMC higher education institutions
Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the great educational visionary of the 19th newlinecentury, had opened a new path in the education field of our nation through his newlinevaluable contributions. He has soared high in the caste-ridden society and took the initial step in the field of education by starting schools with the aim of educating all irrespective of caste or creed. Understanding that education is the best tool to transform the society, he promoted the poor and the marginalized to attend school and made the high caste and the lower caste sit in the same room and on the same bench. Kuriakose Elias Chavara comprehended the immense newlineneed for education, and his work has performed a distinct function in the newlineformation of a contemporary nation. To realize his vision, he established two newlineindigenous congregations named Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) for men and Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC) for women. Being inspired by the vision of the founder, these two Congregations started many schools and colleges all over India. The current study throws light on the Actualization of the Educational Vision of Kuriakose Elias Chavara in relation to Higher Educational Facilities and Formation of Human Capital as independent variables. A newlineconvergent parallel mix method study was employed with a sample consisting of 190 religious faculty members of CMI and CMC higher education institutions from different parts of India. The findings of the study reveal a close positive correlation of actualization of the educational vision of Chavara with the independent variables. Educational facilities are seen to be essential in the development of quality education. Formation of Human Capital acts as significant predictor in the vision actualization. The study is based on the higher education system and religious faculty members in CMI and CMC. It is also expected that providing educational facilities and Formation of Human Capital are the newlinecombination of the vision actualization in the education field. -
Factors influencing family reintergration of children in conflict with law
The Children in Conflict with Law (CCL) is one of the two categories of children under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 (JJA, 2015). The behaviour formation of the CCL is significant because it could help the children: (a) from being a possible threat to society, and (b) being disciplined at all stages of their growth. The failure of newlinebehaviour correction of CCL may lead to severe recidivism, and can potentially newlinetransform them into experienced criminals who would not be tolerated by any society. newlineReintegration of CCL back into their family is the best solution for the problem. The newlineresearch Factors influencing family reintegration of CCL is an attempt to find the factors influencing these children, their family environment, and the society as a newlinewhole for reintegration. This fact-finding study has been completed with an explanatory sequential method in a mixed-research approach. The child offender s demographic details, personality, family environment, social support, and protective factors were part of this research s study. The data were collected both quantitatively and qualitatively. The self-made interview schedules and a standardised tool of the newlineBig Five Personality Inventory were used quantitatively. Case studies through in depth interviews and observations were applied qualitatively to collect data. Simple newlinefrequency analysis and cross-case study with thematic analysis have been used for newlineanalysing the data. Though many powerful social support systems like the Juvenile newlineJustice Board (JJB), District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Police and Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) supported the reintegration of CCL actively, the newlinepersonality of the children and their family environment with its traditions had created adverse effects on the attempts towards reintegration. Twenty to thirty per cent newlineof successful reintegration proves that a scientific and timely intervention can solve newlinethe problems of juvenile delinquency to a great extent. -
Modulated rayleigh-benard ferroconvection in couple stress fluid
Ferromagnetic fluid with couple stress confined between two stress-free, isothermal horizontal plates is considered in this study. The effect of different types of modulation on Rayleigh-Bard convection in a ferromagnetic fluid with couple stress is examined by considering sinusoidal (sine) and non-sinusoidal (square, triangular, and sawtooth) wave types of modulation. Rayleigh- Bard convection in a ferromagnetic fluid with couple stress subjected to gravity, rotation, temperature, and internal heat modulation is discussed by performing linear and non-linear analyses. The expression for the critical Rayleigh number and the correction Rayleigh number are deduced using the Venezian approach. The effect of gravity, rotation, temperature and internal heat modulation on heat transport is studied using the generalized Lorenz model. The effect of various parameters on the onset of convection and heat transport is studied. The ferromagnetic parameters hasten the convection onset and enhance the heat transfer under various modulations. The results of a Newtonian fluid, ferromagnetic fluid, and couple stress fluid is obtained as the limiting cases of this study. -
Optical and Infrared studies of herbig Ae Be stars
The work makes use of the unprecedented capability of the Gaia mission to study various properties of Herbig Ae/Be stars. We placed the Herbig Ae/Be stars in the Gaia color-magnitude diagram and accurately estimated their age and mass. The mass accretion rate is calculated from Hand#945; line newlineflux measurements of 106 HAeBe stars. The mass accretion rate is found to decay exponentially with the age of Herbig Ae/Be stars. Further, the immediate neighborhood of two Herbig Ae/Be stars, V1787 Ori and IL newlineCep, are studied using the astrometric and photometric data from the Gaia mission. We discovered a low mass binary companion to V1787 Ori using the analysis of distance and proper motion values from Gaia DR2. The newlinemass ratio of the coeval binary system is found to be 0.23. Such a skewed mass ratio system is rarely identified in Herbig Ae/Be binary systems. The method of identification and characterization of the V1787 Ori wide binary system opens up the possibility of identifying more such systems. The HBe newlinestar IL Cep tells a much more complex story. The star is identified with a cluster of low mass stars associated with it. We identified 79 co-moving stars that are coeval to IL Cep, within 2 pc radius, from the analysis of newlineGaia EDR3 astrometry. The triggered star formation process called the quotRocket effectquot caused by a massive star HD 216658 is identified to be the cause of the clustered star formation near IL Cep. The effect of this process is demonstrated for the first time using the proper motion data from Gaia. newlineThe immediate neighborhood of Herbig Ae/Be stars is identified as the formation region of long-chain carbon molecules such as Fullerenes and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons. -
Study on nonlinear convective flow of hybrid nanofluids in an annulus
In this modern fluid field technology, hybrid nanofluids are of great interest to researchers due to their improved thermal properties which provide a superior improvement in heat transfer compared to nanofluids. The hybrid nanofluid flow in an annular geometry finds its relevance in engineering and material manufacturing processes such as heat exchangers, nuclear power plants, hot rolling, and heat storage systems due to their high heat transport rate. Since these devices are operated at moderate and very high temperatures adopting linear Boussinesq approximation becomes inappropriate. Owing to this, the present research is devoted to the study of flow, heat, and mass transport characteristics of hybrid nanofluid in an annulus including the effects of radial/transversal magnetic field, thermal radiation, exponential space-related heat source, uniform/non-uniform heat source and variable thermophysical properties under the nonlinear Boussinesq approximation. The fundamental equations are obtained from the laws of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. The dimensionless governing nonlinear equations are treated analytically/numerically. Further, the sensitivity analysis using response surface methodology (RSM) is performed to enhance the understanding of heat and mass transport behavior. The significance of various flow parameters (involving in the problem) on the flow structure, thermal model, concentration field, heat, and mass transport rate are analysed through 2D/3D-surface plots and discussed quantitatively. -
Multi-component condesation mediated synthesis of bioactive heterocyclic compounds
Aromatic heterocycles constitute the most diverse family of organic compounds. Moreover, aromatic heterocycles are widely used for the synthesis of dyes and polymeric materials of high value. The development of selective reactions that utilize easily available and abundant precursors for the efficient synthesis of heterocyclic compounds is a long-standing goal of chemical research. Despite the centrality of its role in a number of important research areas, including medicinal chemistry, total synthesis, and materials science, a general, selective, step-economical, and step-efficient synthesis of heterocycles is still needed. newlinePyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole derivatives have been synthesised by a one-pot multicomponent condensation of different aldehydes, dialdehydes, and ketones with malononitrile, ethyl acetoacetate, hydrazine hydrate (or phenylhydrazine) in the presence of magnetic nano-[CoFe2O4] catalyst under ultrasonic irradiation. The catalyst can be retrieved using an external magnet and used repeatedly. A practical, scalable method for obtaining various pyranopyrazoles has been demonstrated. The extraordinary catalytic role of the various catalyst has been discovered in the processes, which reveals a possible character of enhancing reaction rates and stabilising the intermediates during the course of the reactions. -
A Feminist study of food in select culinary narratives
This research studies Indian immigrant women s relationship with food in the twenty-first century globalised, capitalist, multicultural, American society. It adds to the limited scholarship on the genre of diasporic culinary narratives by looking at the works of Shoba Narayan s Monsoon Diary: A Memoir with Recipes (2003),Amulya Malladi s Serving Crazy with Curry (2007), Bharti Kirchner s Pastries: A Novel of Desserts and Discoveries (2009) and Sandeepa Mukherjee Datta s Bong Mom s Cookbook (2013). The research thus views food as a means for immigrant women to articulate their sense of self and critique the standardization of women s relationship with food by the capitalist food industry. Moreover, critiques of capitalist notions of women s relationship with food further enables the select texts to re-envision women s relationship with the kitchen and domestic work. Finally, the study analyses select culinary narratives as paradoxical texts for its simultaneous critique of the commodification of ethnic culture and performance of cultural self-commodification -
Indicators of corporate financial distress : evidence from India
The study aims to identify the indicators of corporate financial distress in the Indian industrial sector. The study begins by analysing the corporate bankruptcy filings and the outcomes of filings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016. From the analysis of bankruptcy filings, a newlinelist of 82 publicly listed companies of industrial nature experiencing financial distress that have filed for bankruptcy under IBC is identified. Each of the 82 companies are paired with an equal number of matching newlinefinancially sound companies to form a sample of 164 companies. Further, 12 variables from the annual reports of the sample companies are analysed for a period of five years immediately preceding the bankruptcy filing by the distressed companies. Simple regression analysis is employed for determining the primary indicator of corporate financial distress and logistic regression analysis is used to identify the supplementary indicator of corporate financial distress in the Indian industrial sector. The primary and the supplementary indicators are presented in the form of a two-stage process to form the Corporate Distress Prediction (CDP) scorecard. The newlinerecommended CDP scorecard predicts financial distress in the Indian industrial sector at an accuracy ranging between 90 percent to 100 percent during the five years of study. The major implication of the study is that it newlinecan guide the corporate stakeholders in knowing the financial health of a newlinecompany. -
Role of project management methodologies in achieving project success and business value creation in financial services IT projects
Increasingly, project-based organizations, have been implementing project management methodology for specific projects based on the dynamic environment. Financial services face challenges in the form of unstable market conditions, economies and technology, strict controls, and higher stress to meet customer demands and maximize profits. Many IT initiatives fail to provide the desired outcomes as per the project budgets, project types, and project contexts. Some are also unable to deliver business value to the customers due to the adoption of an unsuitable project management methodology. Regardless of the wide variety of choices, project managers often fail to decide on available alternatives. Project managers tend to tailor projects based on criteria that may not be associated with the overall project objectives rationally. The goal of this newlineresearch work is to assess the role of hybrid and agile project management approaches in newlineachieving success and creating business value considering project contexts for financial newlineservices IT projects. A conceptual research framework and various propositions were built on the literature analysis. To analyse the theoretical support, data was gathered through an online questionnaire. The survey was administered to project managers who were newlineinvolved at different levels in IT project development in financial service organizations. The study findings demonstrate that the various key success factors vary significantly across hybrid and agile project management methodologies considering different success measures in IT projects. And, such factors and processes play a vital role, especially in large-size high-technology projects. This research work enriches the project management literature and offers practical guidance by applying the contingency approach for comparing the effect of key success factors applicable to financial service IT projects from the viewpoint of hybrid and agile project management approaches.
