Growth of some urinary crystals and studies on inhibitors and promoters. II. X-ray studies and inhibitory or promotery role of some substances
Best conditions were established for the gel growth of three urinary crystals viz., calcium oxalate monohydrate, calcium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate and ammonium magnesium phosphate hexahydrate. The crystals grown were characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques and density measurements. Crystal growth experiments were carried out by incorporating the extracts or juices of some natural products in the gel media. By carefully observing the changes in the growth of crystals (compared to control experiments carried out at the same conditions), results about the inhibitory or promotery role of the substance incorporated were obtained. It was found that the extracts or juices of many of the naturally occurring substances have interesting inhibitory or promotery effects. These results may have useful applications in the treatment of recurrent stone patients. -
Growth trajectories for executive and social cognitive abilities in an Indian population sample: Impact of demographic and psychosocial determinants
Cognitive abilities are markers of brain development and psychopathology. Abilities, across executive, and social domains need better characterization over development, including factors that influence developmental change. This study is based on the cVEDA [Consortium on Vulnerability to Externalizing Disorders and Addictions] study, an Indian population based developmental cohort. Verbal working memory, visuo-spatial working memory, response inhibition, set-shifting, and social cognition (faux pas recognition and emotion recognition) were cross-sectionally assessed in > 8000 individuals over the ages 623 years. There was adequate representation across sex, urban-rural background, psychosocial risk (psychopathology, childhood adversity and wealth index, i.e. socio-economic status). Quantile regression was used to model developmental change. Age-based trajectories were generated, along with examination of the impact of determinants (sex, childhood adversity, and wealth index). Development in both executive and social cognitive abilities continued into adulthood. Maturation and stabilization occurred in increasing order of complexity, from working memory to inhibitory control to cognitive flexibility. Age related change was more pronounced for low quantiles in response inhibition (??4 versus =2 for higher quantiles), but for higher quantiles in set-shifting (? > ?1 versus ?0.25 for lower quantiles). Wealth index had the largest influence on developmental change across cognitive abilities. Sex differences were prominent in response inhibition, set-shifting and emotion recognition. Childhood adversity had a negative influence on cognitive development. These findings add to the limited literature on patterns and determinants of cognitive development. They have implications for understanding developmental vulnerabilities in young persons, and the need for providing conducive socio-economic environments. 2023 Elsevier B.V. -
Growth, survival and haemato-biochemical profiles of the freshwater catfish, Pangasius sutchi (Fowler, 1937) fingerlings fed with Tinospora cordifolia leaf extract supplemented diet
The present study documents the possible effects of Tinospora cordifolia leaf extract supplemented diets on growth, survival and haemato-biochemical profiles of the catfish, Pangasius sutchi fingerlings. P. sutchi fingerlings were fed with formulated diets, supplemented with four different concentrations of T. cordifolia leaf extract (viz. 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg kg-1 of feed) for 45 days. Fingerlings fed with basal diet served as control. Various parameters of serum biochemical and haematology such as serum total protein content, albumin content, globulin content, albumin globulin ratio, glucose, erythrocytes count, leucocytes count were evaluated along with growth parameters. The results indicated that Specific Growth Rate (SGR), Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER), survival and Haemato-biochemical profiles such as total serum protein, albumin, globulin, albumin globulin ratio and serum glucose were high in the fingerlings fed with T. cordifolia leaf extract supplemented diets, irrespective of dosage, compared to control. Among the four concentrations of T. cordifolia leaf extract used, 400 mg/kg of feed group showed increased growth, survival and enhanced the health status of P. sutchi fingerlings. 2020, Egyptian Society for the Development of Fisheries and Human Health. GST and its Impact on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises - A Study of Peenya Industrial Area in Banglaore, Karnataka
The introduction of Goods and Service Tax on 1st July, 2017 has revamped the tax structure and carved out a new path for the Indian economy. The new tax regime was envisioned to be free of all the problems of the previous tax system but, however since its proposal it has received mixed reviews from industries, academia and others. With extensive changes aimed at One Nation One Tax, it has left massive impact on the Small Scale Industries too. Hence this paper critically analyses the impact of Goods and Service Tax (GST) on Small Scale Industries specifically in Karnataka. Existing literature says that GST shall reduce the cost of doing business, increases transparency, decreases prices of product, increase tax compliance and improve ease of doing business. This paper proves some of these assertions through a primary data research and further identifies the need of reforms with respect to separation of definition of job work and labour work, penalties for non-payment of GST, dual administration and issues pending from the previous tax regime. It has also clearly established that composition scheme has been a non-performer and the reverse charge mechanism must be re-introduced later or revamped to balance its costs and benefits. Gut Homeostasis; Microbial Cross Talks In Health and Disease Management
The human gut is a densely populated region comprising a diverse collection of microorganisms. The number, type and function of the diverse gut microbiota vary at different sites along the entire gastrointestinal tract. Gut microbes regulate signaling and metabolic pathways through microbial cross talks. Host and microbial interactions mutually contribute for intestinal homeostasis. Rapid shift or imbalance in the microbial community disrupts the equilibrium or homeostatic state leading to dysbiosis and causes many gastrointestinal diseases viz., Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Obesity, Type 2 diabetes, Metabolic endotoxemia, Parkinsons disease and Fatty liver disease etc. Intestinal homeostasis has been confounded by factors that disturb the balance between eubiosis and dysbiosis. This review correlates the consequences of dysbiosis with the incidence of various diseases. Impact of microbiome and its metabolites on various organs such as liver, brain, kidney, large intestine, pancreas etc are discussed. Furthermore, the role of therapeutic approaches such as ingestion of nutraceuticals (probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics), Fecal Microbial Treatment, Phage therapy and Bacterial consortium treatment in restoring the eubiotic state is elaborately reviewed. 2021 The Author(s). Gut Microbiome Characterisation of Chrysomya megacephala: Isolation, Identification, Antibiotic Profiling, and Initial Documentation of Leclercia adecarboxylata from the Fly
Chrysomya megacephala, known for its vector potential, harbors a diverse microbiota crucial in understanding disease transmission dynamics. Herein, we report the first documentation of Leclercia adecarboxylata isolated from C. megacephala. L. adecarboxylata is an Enterobacteriaceae, gram-negative bacillus that cause infections in human and animals. Additionally, we have reported the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis from C. megacepahala. The study carried out the antibiotic profiling and hemolytic assays, which revealed distinct resistance patterns and virulence characteristics, shedding light on potential public health implications. L. adecarboxylata, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis showed positive result for hemolysis and in terms of antibiotic resistance P. aeruginosa strains showed resistance to Amoxicillin, Ampicillin and Tetracycline while, E. faecalis showed resistance towards Streptomycin and Tetracycline. However, L. adecarboxylata showed sensitivity to all antibiotics. This study was conducted from Kozhikode, Kerala, India, and this is the first of its kind of study from the region to analyse the vector potential of C. megacephala. These findings underscore the significance of comprehensive microbiological investigations in vector-borne disease surveillance and management strategies. The Author(s) 2024. -
Gym-Goers Self-Identification with Physically Attractive Fitness Trainers and Intention to Exercise
Gym-goers often socially compare themselves with their trainers as they strive to look as attractive as their fitness trainers. The aim of this study was to better understand this phenomenon in the fitness industry. Relying on social comparison theory and social identity theory, self-identification with a physically attractive fitness trainer was posited to have a strong mediating effect on the relationship between appearance motive, weight management motive and gym-goers intention to exercise. The moderation effects of gym-goers age and gender in the direct relationships between appearance motive, weight management motive and exercise intention were also examined. The primary outcome of this study revealed that gym-goers who were influenced by appearance and weight management motives are more likely to identify with physically attractive fitness trainers. Additionally, gender significantly moderates the relationships between appearance motive, weight management motive and exercise intention. Appearance and weight management motives are the primary factors that influence the exercise intention of female gym-goers as compared to their male counterparts. This study sheds new insights into understanding the influence of the physical attractiveness of fitness trainers and its impact on gym-goers exercise intentions via self and social identification process. 2022 by the authors. Hall effect on two-phase radiated flow of magneto-dusty-nanoliquid with irregular heat generation/consumption
Impacts of Hall current and irregular heat generation/consumption on two-phase flow of dusty-nanofluid are scrutinized. Particulate nanofluid saturates the stretched surface. Heat transfer mechanism is studied via radiative heating and viscous dissipation aspects. The nanoliquid is a carrier fluid and dust (micro-sized fine particles) particles are suspended in it. Governed equations are remodeled in the form of ordinary differential system using stretching transformations. Numeric solutions are developed via Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg scheme. The influence of pertinent parameters on both nanofluid and particle phase flow fields are studied through graphs. The friction factor and Nusselt number are also studied. It is established that the Hall current has a significant impact on thermal flow fields. The irregular heat generation/consumption aspect is constructive for the heating process. 2017 -
Hall effects on dusty nanofluid two-phase transient flow past a stretching sheet using KVL model
The influence of Hall current on the time-dependent flow of nanofluid in the presence of dust particles is investigated. The water-based copper nanoliquid containing fine dust particles occupies a stretching surface. The effective thermal conductivity and the viscosity of the nanoliquid are estimated by KVL (Khanafer-Vafai-Lightstone) model. The notion of boundary layer approximation is employed to model the governing equations for both nanofluid and dust phases. Similarity transformations are employed to obtain ordinary differential equations from the governed partial differential equations. The numeric solutions are developed via Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg integration scheme. The graphical illustrations are to explain the impacts of the governing parameters on flow fields. It is established that the nanofluid's Nusselt number increases due to the suspension of dust particles. An enhancement of heat transfer rate has a direct relationship with Hall current and unsteadiness. 2018 Elsevier B.V. -
Hand ability and practice in congenitally blind children
The assumption that blind children will improve in ability with practice in spatial tasks was tested in a group of 90 congenitally blind and blindfolded sighted children between the ages of 5 and 15 years. All the children were tested for hand preference. The children were then pre-tested and post-tested on four tasks that measured various hand skills with their left and right hands. The period of practice between the pre and post-test was four months. Results indicated a percentage gain with practice during development for the left and the right hands of the blind children. The left and right hands of both groups of children did not differ in percentage gain, indicating little or no relationship between hand preference and hand ability. The effects of practice showed gains for the blind children compared to the sighted blindfolded children in the post-test. Handoff schemes in mobile environments a comparative study
Vehicular ad-hoc networks are one of the most popular applications of Ad-hoc networks, where networks are formed without any sort of physical connecting medium and can be formed whenever required. It is an area in networks that has enjoyed a considerable amount of attention for quite some time. Due to the highly mobile environment where these networks find their usability, it can be understood that there are a lot of problems with respect to maintaining the communication links between the moving vehicular nodes and the static infrastructures which act as the access points (AP) for these moving vehicular mobile nodes (MN). The coverage area of each AP is limited and as such, the connections need to be re-established time and again between the MNs and the closest accessible AP. Handoff is the process involved here, which deals with selecting the optimal APs as well as the best network available for data transmission. Handwritten tibetan character recognition using hidden markov model
The Tibetan language which is one of the four oldest and most original languages of Asia is elemental to Tibetan identity, culture and religion and it convey very specific social and cultural behaviors, and ways of thinking. The annihilation of the Tibetan language will have tremendous consequences for the Tibetan culture and hence it is important to preserve it. Tibetan language is mainly used in Tibet, Bhutan, and also in parts of Nepal and India. Tibetan script is devised based on the Devanagari model and Sanskrit based grammars. In this paper, a method for Tibetan handwritten character recognition based on density and distance feature detection is presents. To get a better classification result, images are converted into binary and noise removal is done by using Otzsos method. Features are extracted by normalizing the image based on distance and density of the pixel in the image. Finally, Hidden Markov Model is used for character classification. BEIESP. -
Happiness and resilience among young physically disadvantaged employees in India: A pilot study
Purpose: The study aimed to examine and compare the happiness and resilience of disadvantaged employees and non-disadvantaged employees. Method: The study sample included 37 young employees, between 20 and 30 years of age. Among them, 17 were with physical disadvantages of one type or the other, and 20 had no physical disadvantages. Results: Mann-Whitney U test showed that there is no difference in resilience and happiness between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged employees. Among the non-disadvantaged employees, there is a relationship between happiness and resilience. However, among the disadvantaged employees, this relationship is not there. Conclusions: Disadvantaged employees in the present sample do not differ from the non-disadvantaged in their happiness and resilience. However, it cannot be assumed that happiness is a contributing factor to the resilience of the disadvantaged employees. HAPPINESS INDEX OF HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS TOWARDS ONLINE LEARNING IN INDIA
World Happiness Index generally indicates the level of happiness and satisfaction among the residents in a given country. Since we all know that worldwide new ecosystem of online education has evolved there are many countries which have done pretty well with respect to adopting of technology in the education others have been lacking behind and hence causing more inequality in the online education space. To understand the students' perception and satisfaction regarding the online learning this study was conducted to assess the relationships of the happiness index (HI) and related parameters which were retrieved from existing literatures and self-prepared parameters. Accordingly, the world happiness index signifies a direct relationship with the social economic development factors leading to the general well-being of individuals and societies that include the full development of healthcare, politics, and higher employment. The question arises has the online learning lived up to its potential? The Indian Education System is heterogeneous comprising of private and public universities. The study was on conducted in the National Capital Region of India, (NCR). The data was collected from various types of universities' students irrespective of the gender, caste, creed and religion. The study aims to understand the perception of the students and challenges faced by them during the online learning. It is very important to know the views of the students along with teachers to get the true ground reality of online learning in India. Since the pandemic have hit overall the world education sector was hit too. All the educational institutions were closed for about nearly 1.5 years. There was drastic shift in the paradigm from traditional learning to the online learning. To understand the students' perception data is being collected from around 268 students of the Delhi NCR region. The study is quantitative. The questionnaire was distributed to the both Government and Private Universities to understand students' satisfaction regarding online learning. The data was being analyzed in the graph form. Happiness, Meaning, and Satisfaction in Life as Perceived by Indian University Students and Their Association with Spirituality
The present study aims to examine the association between various dimensions of psychological well-being (subjective happiness, satisfaction, and meaning in life), spirituality, and demographic and socioeconomic background of university students. A total of 414 postgraduate students were selected from three different schools, viz. science, management, and social sciences/humanities of Pondicherry University (A Central University), Puducherry, India, following multistage cluster sampling method. One semi-structured questionnaire and four standardized psychological scales, viz. subjective happiness scale, satisfaction with life scale, meaning in life questionnaire, and spirituality attitude inventory, were used for data collection after checking psychometric properties of the scales. The results show that a positive significant correlation between spirituality and subjective happiness exists. Spirituality is also correlated with meaning in life and satisfaction with life scale. Statistically, no significant gender difference was observed with respect to subjective happiness, meaning, and satisfaction in life as well as spirituality although the mean score of female students was more in all the four psychological domains. Non-integrated students are found to be happier than integrated students, and statistically it was significant. Positive interpersonal relationship and congenial family environment were probed to be facilitating factors for positive mental health of university students. Has Indias Employment Guarantee Program Achieved Intended Targets?
This paper explores the performance of the worlds largest employment guarantee program, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Schemes in India, both nationally and through a sub-national-level comparison based on key performance indicators viz. (i) financial indicators, (ii) physical performance indicators, and (iii) inclusiveness indicators. The paper is based on administrative data taken from the Ministry of Rural Development from 2006 to 2019. Despite sharp increases in fund allocation, total expenditures, and utilization rates, there was deceleration in majority of physical performance indicators after 2016, including total person-days employment and person-days of employment per household, with wide variation in sub-national level implementation capabilities. The finding also rejects the falsity of saturation of MGNREGA work in the rural areas, which is reflected in a strong positive correlation between fund allocation and employment generation. Its broader objective of social safety net for vulnerable people in rural areas shows an achievement, although with some gaps in implementation. Hazard identification of endocrine-disrupting carcinogens (EDCs) in relation to cancers in humans
Endocrine disrupting chemicals or carcinogens have been known for decades for their endocrine signal disruption. Endocrine disrupting chemicals are a serious concern and they have been included in the top priority toxicants and persistent organic pollutants. Therefore, researchers have been working for a long time to understand their mechanisms of interaction in different human organs. Several reports are available about the carcinogen potential of these chemicals. The presented review is an endeavor to understand the hazard identification associated with endocrine disrupting carcinogens in relation to the human body. The paper discusses the major endocrine disrupting carcinogens and their potency for carcinogenesis. It discusses human exposure, route of entry, carcinogenicity and mechanisms. In addition, the paper discusses the research gaps and bottlenecks associated with the research. Moreover, it discusses the limitations associated with the analytical techniques for detection of endocrine disrupting carcinogens. 2024 Elsevier B.V.
