Diversity of Endophytic Fungi in Plant Species: Traditional vs. High-Throughput Sequencing Approaches
The plant microbiome significantly impacts plant life, with fungi playing a crucial role in shaping interactions and classifications. Advances in cultivation technologies have refined fungal classification, and research highlights the vital connection between endophytic fungi and their plant hosts. The present study employs morphological and phylogenetic techniques, predicting the Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 (ITS2) secondary structure and using next-generation sequencing (NGS) data to detect fungal endophytes in plant leaves via both traditional and conventional approaches. The research area, with its hot semi-arid environment and red and black soils, supports drought-resistant plants like Senna auriculata, Ziziphus mauritiana, and Catunaregam spinosa, known for their medicinal properties. These plants, rich in antioxidants, play a vital role in traditional medicine and highlight the region's rich ethno-botanical heritage. The culture-dependent study on the foliage yielded a total of 17 isolates from S. auriculata and 16 each from both C. spinosa and Z. mauritiana. The most common genera, Alternaria and Nigrospora, account for 18.3% of all isolated endophytic fungi. Three plants were colonized with Nigrospora and Lasiodiplodia, and their morphotypes were determined using ITS2 secondary structure prediction. Recent ecological studies highlight unculturable taxa, or dark taxa, where many species cannot sporulate or be cultured, emphasizing the need for High - Throughput Sequencing (HTS) approaches. The study gathered 68,791 reads from S. auriculata with 101 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), 58,620 from C. spinosa with 219 OTUs, and 66,087 from Z. mauritiana with 193 OTUs, with the majority of OTUs related to Colletotrichum (69%) and a minimum of Myrmaecium (2%). A total of 49 fungal isolates were obtained from traditional methods, whereas 513 fungal OTUs were retrieved through HTS methods, confirming the presence of a highly abundant fungus population in plant samples. The study reveals that using the ITS short amplicon sequencing technique provides distinct insights into endophytic fungal communities in three plant samples. In conclusion, analyzing plant fungal components using a combination of culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques may be a novel strategy. 2025 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland. -
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives; Organizational Culture; and Employee Retention: Situational TraitsMediated Model
The primary purpose of this study is to examine the role of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and organizational culture on employees situational traits and employee retention within contemporary organizational settings. In addition, this study investigates the mediating effects of employees situational traits on the relationships between DEI initiatives and employee retention, as well as on the relationship between organizational culture and employee retention. The study employs structural equation modelling to analyse a sample of 429 working employees. The findings suggest that DEI initiatives have a more substantial influence on employee retention compared to organizational culture. Employee situational traits mediate the effect of organizational culture and DEI initiatives on retention, emphasizing the importance of individual experiences. Therefore, integrating DEI initiatives into the organizational culture can create an inclusive workplace, attracting and retaining a diverse workforce. 2026 The Author(s). DKMI: Diversification ofWeb Image Search Using Knowledge Centric Machine Intelligence
Web Image Recommendation is quite important in the present-day owing to the large scale of the multimedia content on the World Wide Web (WWW) specifically images. Recommendation of the images that are highly pertinent to the query with diversified yet relevant query results is a challenge. In this paper the DKMI framework for web image recommendation has been proposed which is mainly focused on ontology alignment and knowledge pool derivation using standard crowd-sourced knowledge stores like Wikipedia and DBpedia. Apart from this the DKMI model encompasses differential classification of the same dataset using the GRU and SVM, which are two distinct differential classifiers at two different levels. GRU being a Deep Learning classifier and the SVM being a Machine Learning classifier, enhances the heterogeneity and diversity in the results. Semantic similarity computation using Cosine Similarity, PMI and SOC-PMI at several phases ensures strong relevance computation in the model. The DKMI model yields overall Precision of 97.62% with an accuracy of 98.36% along with the lowest FDR score of 0.03 and is much better than the other models that are considered to be the baseline models. 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG. -
DMD Based Multi-Object Spectrograph for INdian Spectroscopic and Imaging Space Telescope: INSIST
INdian Spectroscopic and Imaging Space Telescope (INSIST) is the next-generation UV-Optical space mission proposed by the Indian Astronomical community motivated by the great success of India's first multi-wavelength Astronomical satellite (ASTROSAT) where Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) was one of the main payload launched in 2015 by Indian Space Research Organisation. INSIST is primarily designed for photometry observation in three bands (g-[400nm-550nm], u-[300nm-400nm] and UV-[150nm-300nm]) simultaneously over 0.25 sq.degree field of view. INSIST is equipped with a low resolution [R?500] spectrograph for multi-Object slitless spectroscopy over the imaging field of view and also has a medium resolution [R?2000] spectrograph for multi-object slit spectroscopy in UV-band over ?6 sq.arcmin sky. MEMS-based Digital Micromirror Device [DMD] is used to form configurable slits for the selection of objects at the focal plane of the telescope for multi-object slit spectrograph. Multi-Object spectrograph with DMD as a re-configurable slit for INSIST is designed and the performance of the spectrograph is presented. 2023 World Scientific Publishing Company. -
DMD-based Multi-Object Spectrograph (D-MOS): AIV and first light results
A Digital Micromirror Device (DMD)-based Multi-Object Spectrograph (D-MOS) with an integrated imager has been developed. The optical performance of the MOS is evaluated through comprehensive laboratory calibration and on-sky observations using the 1.3-meter J.C. Bhattacharya (JCB) Telescope at the Vainu Bappu Observatory (VBO). The system is designed to assess the viability of using a DMD as a programmable slit mechanism for future ultraviolet-optical space missions. A complete imager-cum-spectrograph assembly was constructed using off-the-shelf optical components and configured for operation in the optical band, employing a DLP9500 DMD with a 19201080 micromirror array. Calibration experiments established the DMD-to-detector coordinate mapping and validated the strategies for object selection and slit placement. On-sky tests in crowded stellar fields confirmed successful slit targeting, precise object alignment, and multiplexed spectral acquisition. The spectrograph achieved a peak efficiency of 32%, a spectral resolving power of R1000 at 6000 a multiplexing capability of up to 46 slits (extendable to 85), and a contrast ratio of 6000. These results demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the DMD MOS system under real observational conditions and raise its TRL level for use in next-generation spectroscopic space missions. DMRD-Net: Dual modality retinal diagnostic network with few shot episodic learning and XAI interpretability
Early diagnosis of retinal pathologies is critical for preventing irreversible blindness, particularly in rare conditions with limited labeled medical data. Traditional diagnostics employ a single imaging modality, limiting the identification of heterogeneous anomalies in the retina. DMRD-Net, a diagnostic system is presented that integrates spectral-domain optical coherence tomography with fundus photographs, utilizing two parallel branches of a neural network, that is EfficientNet-B0 encoders and few-shot episodic meta-learning module based on Prototypical Networks, that merge their outputs to enhance the precision of diagnosis. Supervised learning methodologies are employed to identify common retinal diseases, followed by the application of meta-learning technique, referred to as Prototypical Networks, to aggregate a limited set of data for the study of rare diseases. To support clinical confidence and improve transparency, explainable artificial intelligence is utilized to facilitate decision-making by models. It facilitated the evaluation of performance on both common and rare retinal disorders. The system achieved over 96% episodic accuracy in diagnosing rare conditions, including Macular Hole, Retinitis Pigmentosa, and Stargardt Disease, in Central Serous Chorioretinopathy. The overall classification accuracy for common diseases was 96.5%. Overall, DMRD-Net is a unified, data-efficient, and interpretable multimodal diagnostic system that works well for both common and rare retinal disorders. 2026 The Author(s) -
DNA based cryptography to improve usability of authenticated access of electronic health records
The quality of health care has been drastically improved with the evolution of Internet. Electronic health records play a major role in interoperability and accessibility of patients data which helps in effective and timely treatment irrespective of the demographic area. The proposed model is to ensure and monitor maternal health during pregnancy and to create awareness alerts (options include messages, voice alerts or flash the system) based on the individual health record. The system aims to prevent maternal death due to medical negligence and helps to make recommendations to prevent future mortality based on medical history and take appropriate action. Authentication is a critical aspect considering the trade-off between usability and security whereas data breach and related cybercrime are major concerns in health care. DNA Data Storage: A Novel Approach to High Density, Long Term Digital Storage
With global data volume expected to reach 175 zettabytes by 2025, existing data storage systems face growing issues due to limited durability, high costs, and susceptibility to data loss. DNA, a naturally occurring biomolecule with extremely high storage density and extraordinary stability, has emerged as a promising alternative for long-term digital data preservation. Major challenges remain, including the high cost of DNA synthesis and the slow rates of encoding and data retrieval. Recent advances in DNA nanotechnology, molecular computation, nanopore sequencing, and hybrid silicon-DNA systems are helping to overcome these difficulties. Sequence-based techniques provide exceptional density, while structural DNA approaches allow for dynamic rewriting and reusability. DNA-based authentication to access internet of things-based healthcare data
Data security and privacy are always considered as critical aspects, especially in healthcare. The advent of technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) has encouraged a great deal of attention in this digital era and helped to improve e-health services. IoT-based services in healthcare and their applications have led to potential growth of quality services in healthcare. However, the sensitive nature of healthcare data and IoT devices which store and collect real-time data makes it even more vulnerable to various attacks. With the development of digitalized data and IoT-based e-health systems, authentication mechanisms are essential to ensure both usability and security. Considering these aspects, a novel, secure user authentication scheme is proposed that uses user ID, unique ID (AADHAAR), password, DNA steganography, and hash function. Do all shocks produce embedded herding and bubble? An empirical observation of the Indian stock market
Herding has a history of igniting large, irrational market ups and downs, usually based on a lack of fundamental support. Intuitively, most herds start with an external shock. This empirical study seeks to detect shock-induced herding and the creation of nascent bubbles in the Indian stock market. Initially, the multifractal form of the detrended fluctuation analysis was applied. Then the Reformulated Hurst exponent for the Bombay stock exchange (BSE) was determined using Kantelhardt's calibration. The investigation found evidence of high-level herding and a bubble in 2012, with a high value of Hurst Exponent (0.7349). The other years of the research period (2011, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2020-2021) observed mild to significant herding with comparatively lower Hurst values. The results confirm that herding behavior occurs during a crisis and harsh situations emitting shocks. The study concludes that shock-based herding is prevalent in all six shocks: the economic meltdown, commodities and currency devaluation, geo-political problems, the Central Bank's decision on liquidity management, and the Pandemic. Do Bank Characteristics Really Matter for its Environmental Reporting?
The last few decades have seen an increasing number of researches in the area of environmental reporting. Institutions across the globe have been extensively reporting their environmental initiatives through their annual reports. There is a dearth of research on environmental reporting in the Indian context. Thus, this study comprehensively analyzes the environmental reporting practices of scheduled banks in India. It further attempts to explore the association between environmental reporting and bank characteristics. The secondary data is collected from the annual reports, sustainability reports, and business responsibility reports for the period 2017-2022. The sample consists of ten top-rated commercial banks chosen based on market capitalization during June 2022. The content analysis technique is used to extract information on environmental practices under twelve major categories. This study employs correlation analysis to examine the association between environmental reporting and bank characteristics. The findings of this study reveal that Indian commercial banks are increasingly reporting environmental information in their bank reports and websites. Further, the results of correlation analysis revealed a significant association between environmental reporting and the banks' age, size, and profitability. Further, this study recommends policymakers and concerned professional bodies introduce additional environmental guidelines and widen the scope of reporting in the banking industry. 2024 National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research. Do callous-unemotional traits and resilience work together or in conflict? Thriving after trauma in children
Cumulative trauma, which is devastating can lead to severe psychological outcomes. Exposure to various kinds of trauma, especially in childhood is even more harmful than the sheer volume of experience. Children experiencing cumulative trauma are at greater risk of developing callous unemotional traits. This study examined the mediating role of callous unemotional traits and the moderating role of resilience, in the association between cumulative trauma and behavioral problems among children. A survey of 314 vulnerable children, aged 13 to 17 years (girls = 167; boys = 147) was conducted at seven different institutes in Assam, India. The results indicated that the children experienced 16 different types of trauma during their developmental phases. The mediating model indicated a strong facilitating effect of callous-unemotional (CU) traits in the relationship between cumulative trauma and behavioral problems: externalizing (? =.01; p <.05); internalizing problems (? =.03; p <.01); personal adjustment (? =.03; p <.01); and school problems (? =.04; p <.01). Additionally, resilience did not moderate the association between trauma and behavioral problems. This study strengthens the evidence associating childhood cumulative trauma with an increased risk for the development of CU traits, supporting the notion that these traits could potentially reduce resilience. 2026 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. -
Do economic globalization and the level of education impede poverty levels? A non-linear ARDL approach
This study empirically examines whether economic globalization reduces (enhances) the level of poverty in the top (bottom) globalized region by controlling economic growth, urbanization, government expenditure, and public expenditure on education. This issue has taken Europe and Central Asia (ECA) as the top (16) and South Asia (SA) as the bottom (7) economic globalized developing region for the empirical analysis for the period of 1991-2020. Two empirical models, non-linear ARDL and PMG-ARDL, estimate the impact of globalization (trade and financial openness) and education on poverty. This study also segregates economic globalization into de jure and de facto to critically analyze the impact on poverty reduction. The long-run results suggest that economic globalization has a negative (positive) effect on poverty in the top (bottom) globalized region. Apart from globalization, primary education is insufficient for reducing poverty in the ECA region, while primary education is enough to reduce poverty in the SA region. After replacing economic globalization with trade and financial openness, the results reveal that more trade openness is difficult for reducing poverty in top globalized developing countries. On the contrary, financial openness reduces (enhances) poverty in the top (bottom) globalized region. Additionally, the impact of de jure and de facto economic globalization are similar throughout the regions. The effects of control variables are mixed in nature. From a policy perspective, the government of these two regions should use education as a weapon to lower poverty vulnerability by improving its quality and giving extensive focus on trade and financial openness to find out the leakage of the financial flows. Do fine dine restaurants satisfy customer needs?Diners perception of functional aspects of quality, value and satisfaction
Objectives: Guest satisfaction has emerged as a potentially important factor in restaurant performance and function. The objective of this paper is to examine the current state of guest satisfaction and factors affecting them in fine dining restaurant through a review of the literature. The review focuses on six determinants and their effect on guest satisfaction. Design: A systematic review of lighting, Type of music, food quality, food quantity, food plating and foodservice about guest satisfaction was performed. Review methods: The literature was derived from the published research articles. The selection criteria for the review included the studies that were; written in English, related to guest satisfaction in the hospitality sector, employee performance in the hospitality sector. Results: The literature review identified five distinct lines of research that have focused on guest satisfaction in fine dining restaurants. Total 52 guest satisfaction based articles referenced in this paper, a sample of 30 studies reported on the examination of antecedents of satisfaction among guests. Key findings suggest that all the five factors that are; lighting, Type of music, food quality, food quantity food plating, and foodservice significantly impact on guest satisfaction. Conclusions: The study of Factors affecting guest satisfaction in a fine dining restaurant helps in the restaurant to build an image in the minds of their guests and creates awareness for Guests on how fine dining functions. Future research is required to provide restaurants a better understanding of their guests for their satisfaction. 2019 SERSC. -
Do flexible working hours influence employee skill enhancement and productivity? Evidence from polyvalent workers
This chapter investigates the influence of flexible working schedules affect the productivity and skill development of polyvalent workers. A thorough literature analysis guided the creation of a questionnaire that was given to 153 polyvalent workers as a sample. The gathered data was subjected to statistical analysis in order to determine how flexible work schedules affected worker productivity and skill development. The results show a strong correlation between flexible work schedules and increased productivity and skill development among employees. Furthermore, it was discovered that these results were significantly impacted by flexible working hours. Flexible schedules can help multitasking employees, who are skilled in a range of jobs, improve their productivity and further develop their skills. Do Frequency of Visit and Length of Stay Alter Perceived Cognitive Destination Image? A Multivariate Approach
The Indian tourism industry is competing with global destinations through effective and lucrative strategies. Strategic destination branding is one of the finest ways of achieving the frontier. This requires careful analysis of tourists' perception and behavior from time to time and inculcate insights on the branding process. Accordingly, this research work is an extract from a major research that focused on whether the behavioral elements such as tourists' frequency of visit and length of stay to/in the destination influenced the perceived cognitive destination image. Even though literary sources indicated the connection between these factors, a void was identified in terms of the aspects of the cognitive image, specifically in the Indian context. Hence, a district in Tamil Nadu that had high tourist attractions and potentialities to serve distinct tourist motives was chosen for the study. The respondents answered a structured questionnaire that contained the necessary questions and statements on tourists' sociodemographic characteristics, frequency of visit, length of stay, and perception of the cognitive image of the destination. The sample size was rounded to 327 after data cleaning. Simple percentage analysis revealed that the highest percentage of tourists were frequent visitors and stayed in the destination for more than a week. This is a good sign for marketers to increase the tourists' inflow and invest in branding strategies. The multivariate analysis of variance technique of SPSS was employed to analyze the data. The results indicated that despite the frequency of visit and length of stay, some of the cognitive belief aspects remained unaltered. Suggestions were made to the marketers on deploying the cognitive image aspects while designing the advertisement campaigns and including the cognitive image elements in the branding process. Theoretical implications were also indicated on the outcome of this research. Also, limitations were stated in terms of the sample size, research location, and other aspects. Do futures and options trading increase spot market volatility in India? the case of S&P CNX Nifty
The exponential generalised autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (EGARCH) model followed by standard GARCH (1, 1) model were employed to investigate the impact of introduction of futures and options trading on the volatility of the underlying spot market in India. The empirical analysis was conducted for the daily closing price returns of S&P CNX Nifty spot index from 1st January, 1996 through 31st October, 2008. The empirical results reveal that the spot market volatility has been declined after the introduction of futures and options trading in India. Besides, the empirical results indicate that the impact of recent news has a greater impact on the spot market changes following the onset of futures/options trading. At the same time, the persistence of volatility shocks has been declined in the post-derivatives scenario indicating increased efficiency of the Indian spot market. Hence, the present study suggests that the introduction of futures and options trading have improved the speed and quality of information flowing in the spot market. This enhances the overall market depth, increases market liquidity and ultimately reduces informational asymmetries and therefore compresses spot market volatility in India.
