From the local to the global: the journey of Suguna Foods
Learning outcomes: On completion of this case study, students will be able to understand collaboration and synergy between farmers and organisations through value creation, like fundraising, based on the comprehension of the resource-based theory; understand the overview and concept of the value chain and supply chain management in the agribusiness to reduce costs of inventories; understand the concept of segmentation and positioning to increase revenue for organisations by leveraging existing resources human and financial; and understand the branding strategy to create a sustainable competitive advantage for Suguna Foods. Case overview/synopsis: Suguna was started by two brothers, B. Soundararajan and G.B. Sundararajan, to help other farmers. Suguna, with just 200 broilers in 1984, grew to be the number 1 poultry company across India. Soundararajan was a pioneer and innovator who started contract farming in India in 1991. This model helped both the farmers and the company to became successful. The farmers always struggled to pay the cost of feed and other materials, as credit was not readily and easily available from financial institutions. Suguna helped farmers by providing feed, medicines, etc., free of cost in return for the good rearing of chickens. Because of the success of this venture, they decided to continue with it. Today, Suguna is a successful company that sells chicken, eggs and processed meat. They modernised the retail chain to supply consumers with fresh, healthy and hygienic meat. Sugunas vision was to Energize rural India by helping farmers succeed. They helped over 40,000 farmers from 15,000+ villages in 18+ Indian states. Although the growth helped both farmers and Suguna, the increased cost of raw materials for Suguna and increased input costs/power costs for farmers had to be tackled on a war footing so that both could have good income despite the increased inflation. Moreover, the retail price of live chicken was more or less stagnant in the past five years, especially after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Complexity academic level: This case can be used as the basis for a 90-min class discussion. This case study is suitable for use in an master of business administration course module or in an executive education program on developing an understanding of value creation in the business model in a rural market and also how the supply chain works. This case study can also be used to teach pricing, segmentation in marketing and supply chain perspectives and decision-making skills. Negative-Valent Palladium-Stabilized CoPdN Thin Films as a Catalyst for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction
The urgent global demand for sustainable energy drives the search for durable and efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting. Cobalt mononitride (CoN) stands out due to its earth abundance, high conductivity, and corrosion resistance, but its thermodynamic instability often results in cobalt-rich secondary phases. Here, we report a scalable reactive cosputtering approach for the controlled synthesis of CoN thin films, along with palladium (Pd) incorporation to enhance activity and stability. Pd doping induces a negative valence state and promotes electron transfer from nitrogen to Pd sites, thereby refining the microstructure, redistributing charge, and shifting the d-band center away from the Fermi level. These synergistic effects reduce the overpotential from 470 to 360 mV at 10 mAcm2 in a sample coated on the ITO substrate and deliver markedly improved long-term OER stability with increased catalytically active sites. The turnover frequency showed nearly twice the intrinsic activity with Pd doping. This work establishes Pd-doped CoN as a high-performance, durable electrocatalyst, offering a scalable pathway toward efficient water splitting technologies. 2025 American Chemical Society -
Balancing Beauty and Facts: Examining the Dual Impact of Product Presentation and Information on Consumer Purchase Decisions in the Skincare Products
This paper is a discussion by the authors on effects of the presentation and information of product on consumer purchasing behaviour in skincare industry. In the existing competitive market where there are many products of similar kind and assertions, consumers are usually overwhelmed with excessive information. Product presentation-by designing the packaging, the aesthetics and branding something-develops the first impressions and emotional attraction, whereas product information including ingredients content, safety certification, labelling and others develops confidence and perceived quality. Nevertheless, there are not many studies that contrast their relative impact or investigate their mutual impact. This study bridges that gap by conducting a mixed method study consisting of a focus group visual preference testing (n=170) and an online survey of consumers (n=162). Results also show that information on the product, particularly ingredient disclosure and safety accreditation are a major determinant of purchase among consumers. Design and presentation may evoke immediate interest, but when product information is manipulated they have no statistical power on the ultimate purchase. It is important to note that the synergistic effect of presentation and information is not better than the effects of information alone. The implications of these findings are that although brand recognition increases with the aesthetic appeal, it is factual clarity that eventually leads to purchase intention. The research builds on the consumer decision-making theory because it focuses more on informational factors rather than emotional packaging cues in the ultimate buying of skincare products to provide marketing marketers with an excellent idea on how to increase transparency and authenticity to enhance consumer trust and confidence to buy a product. 2026, Iquz Galaxy Publisher. Size-dependent analysis of surface wave in irregular fractured porous seabed subjected to fractional-order derivative
This study focuses on the investigation of the dispersive and damping characteristics of surface waves through an irregular boundary of ocean bed composed of a fluid-saturated dual porosity/dual permeability material. The nonlocal fluid-saturated dual porosity/dual permeability layer (NFSDP2L) is confined by a nonlocal viscous liquid layer (NVLL) and a nonlocal viscous sandy substrate (NVSS) having fractional viscoelastic properties. The governing equations for the proposed model are derived using Eringens nonlocal theory. The complex frequency relation is obtained by applying the variable separation technique and enforcing appropriate boundary conditions. By dissociating the frequency relation into real (dispersion equation) and imaginary (attenuation equation) parts, graphs are generated to illustrate the influence of several key parameters., viz. nonlocality, porosity, sandiness, fractional-order, fluctuation, flatness, and position on the fundamental and higher modes of propagating waves. The effects of various parameters are also depicted through the graphical illustration of shear wave speed in NFSDP2L and NVSS. Furthermore, the surface response of shear stress against depth within the layered structure has been graphically illustrated. Shear Waves Induced Vibration in a Size-dependent Loosely-bonded ViscoelasticFlexoelectric Material Structure Subjected to Fractional Derivative
The present study investigates the dispersive and damping limitations of shear horizontal waves (SH-waves) in an imperfectly bonded size-dependent layer over layer (LoL) structure. The LoL model consists of a nonlocal flexoelectric layer (NFL) coated by a thin nonlocal viscoelastic layer (NVL) with fractional elastic and viscoelastic properties. Utilizing Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory, the governing equations for both NVL and NFL have been established and a complex frequency relation through analytical methods is obtained by applying appropriate boundary conditions at the imperfect interface and free surfaces. The complex frequency relation was then separated into dispersion and attenuation equations to represent the dispersive and damping characteristics of SH-waves in the LoL model. The study presents the classical case as a particular instance along with various other cases obtained by relaxing certain assumptions from the present model. To visualize the impact of key parameters such as viscosity, NVL thickness, permittivity, piezoelectricity, nonlocality parameters of NVL and NFL, imperfectness, fractional-order derivative, and flexoelectricity on dispersive and damping natures, several graphs have been plotted and discussed the distinguished region of existence for dispersion and attenuation curves. This was achieved by deriving the lower and upper bounds for SH-wave velocity. Additionally, the influence of key parameters on the surface response of nonlocal shear stresses and particle displacement within the LoL structure is graphically depicted as a function of depth. The findings reveal that SH-wave characteristics are significantly more diverse in the size-dependent LoL model compared to the classical LoL model. The findings of this study hold significant promise for advancing the design and functionality of various technological applications. By enhancing our understanding of surface wave dynamics in size-dependent structures combining flexoelectric and viscoelastic materials, this research paves the way for innovations in sensor technology, energy harvesting systems, and devices capable of manipulating waves. 2025 Elsevier Masson SAS -
Peers, Parents and Families as agents of influence on adolescents perspectives towards people with Mental Health Problems: Mental Health Professionals Views
Purpose: This study aims to explore mental health professionals views on adolescent attitudes towards their peers with mental health problems and the influence of parental, familial and societal environments on these attitudes. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative research design was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventeen mental health professionals in Bangalore, India, with at least two years of experience working with adolescents. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data. Findings: Mental health professionals reported diverse adolescent attitudes towards peers with mental health issues, ranging from support to bullying and exclusion. Family dynamics, peer influence and societal stigma were identified as significant factors shaping these attitudes. Research limitations/implications: The remote interviews during the pandemic limited access to non-verbal cues and work settings. The study focused on professionals' views from Bangalore, not capturing the diverse needs of adolescents across India. Additionally, practitioners from urban settings might not represent the challenges of their rural counterparts. The high concentration of female participants hinders generalisability. Variable interview lengths and participant openness might introduce bias, likely influenced by experience and views on mental health awareness. Practical implications: The findings underscore that adolescents' views on peer mental health are crucial for mental health professionals to design targeted interventions and support systems. Implementing programs that raise mental health awareness and reduce stigma can benefit schools and communities. Social implications: This study highlights the necessity of a holistic strategy to tackle adolescent mental health. Creating supportive peer environments, encouraging open family communication, and combating societal stigma can foster a more inclusive and mentally healthy society for adolescents. Originality/value: This study contributes to the growing body of research on adolescent mental health by providing insights into professionals views of peer attitudes. A Comparative Study of ML and DL Approaches for Twitter Sentiment Classification
This research made use of various machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods - such as support vector machines, random forests, logistic regression, naive Bayes, and XGBoost, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and feedforward neural networks (FNNs) - for tweet analysis to investigate public sentiment towards Ola and Uber. The objective is to determine the most effective method for distinguishing between good and negative tweets. Feature engineering techniques improve the algorithms interpretation of tweet content. To balance out the disparity between positive and negative tweets. The project aims to uncover customer wants and concerns on Twitter to help Ola and Uber, in addition to improving Algorithms Accuracy. The study intends to help these ride-hailing businesses make educated modifications to boost customer happiness by closely examining tweets. Essentially, the study assesses how well various ML and DL algorithms comprehend user feedback on Uber and Ola. The overarching goal is to not only enhance computational methods but also contribute to the improvement of these ride-hailing services, ultimately fostering a more positive online environment for Ola and Uber enthusiasts. Effects of variable viscosity and rotation modulation on ferroconvection
We theoretically explore the dynamics of a ferrofluid with temperature and magnetic field-dependent viscosity, which is in a RayleighBard situation and is subjected to rotation. The problem considers both sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal time-periodic variations of rotation to study the onset and post-onset regimes of RayleighBard ferroconvection. We perform a weakly nonlinear stability analysis using a truncated Fourier series representation and arrive at the third-order Lorenz system for ferrofluid convection with variable viscosity. By using the linearized form of the Lorenz system for ferrofluid convection with variable viscosity, we arrive at the critical Rayleigh number to study the onset of rotating ferroconvection. The heat transport is quantified in terms of the time-averaged Nusselt number and the effects of various parameters on it are studied. The effect of modulated rotation is found to have a stabilizing effect on the onset of ferroconvection while that of variable viscosity has a destabilizing effect. The effects of magnetorheological and thermorheological effects are antagonistic in nature. It is found that the square waveform modulation facilitates maximum heat transport in the system due to advanced onset of ferroconvection. 2021, Akadiai Kiad Budapest, Hungary. -
Thermoconvective instability in a vertically oscillating horizontal ferrofluid layer with variable viscosity
The paper sheds light on the linear and nonlinear stability of a ferrofluid with the temperature and magnetic-field-dependent viscosity subjected to an imposed time-periodic gravity modulation. The perturbations in the system due to external reasons are expanded in terms of the amplitude of modulation in the case of linear stability and a truncated representation of the Fourier series in the case of nonlinear stability. A nonautonomous Lorenz model for the problem is first obtained, and both linear and nonlinear analyses of the system are performed using this. The expression for the critical Rayleigh number, (Formula presented.), and the correction Rayleigh number, (Formula presented.), is found from the linearized Lorenz model. The Lorenz system of equations is solved for the amplitude to arrive at the Nusselt number (Nu), which quantifies the heat transport. In the study we find that the thermorheological effect and the magnetization effect work in unison to destabilize the system, while the magnetorheological effect and the effect of vertical oscillations stabilize the system. The influence of the parameters on the heat transport is the opposite to their effect on the critical Rayleigh number. Kinematic study of molecular gas in cometary globule - LBN 437
Bright-rimmed, cometary-shaped star-forming globules, associated with H ii regions, are remnants of compressed molecular shells exposed to ultraviolet radiation from central OB-type stars. The interplay between dense molecular gas and ionizing radiation, analysed through gas kinematics, provides significant insights into the nature and dynamic evolution of these globules. This study presents the results of a kinematic analysis of the cometary globule, Lynds' Bright Nebula (LBN) 437, focusing on the first rotational transition of CO and CO molecular lines observed using the Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory. The averaged CO spectrum shows a slightly skewed profile, suggesting the possibility of a contracting cloud. The molecular gas kinematics reveals signatures of infalling gas in the cometary head of LBN 437, indicating the initial stages of star formation. The mean infall velocity and mass infall rate towards the cometary head of LBN 437 are 0.25 km s and 5.08 10 M yr, respectively, which align well with the previous studies on intermediate or high-mass star formation. 2025 The Author(s). -
Hybrid GNN-Driven Framework for Intelligent Malware Detection and Cryptojacking Prevention in Heterogeneous Cloud Environments
Cloud environments are increasingly targeted by cryptojackers who use the computers processing capabilities for mining cryptocurrency without authorization. This research aims to enhance the security features that protect against cyber attackers by implementing deep learning techniques that help to detect anomalous behaviors in the cloud through analysis of data from typical system transactions. The hybrid HGCN-SIEM Fusion architecture for cryptojacking prevention and malware detection incorporates four types of Graph Neural Network (GNN) approaches: GCN, GAT, GIN, and GraphSAGE. The proposed technique achieves superior malware detection accuracy compared to all baseline models. After experiments on the standard SoK cryptojacking malware dataset, GAT and GraphSAGE demonstrated an accuracy average of 97.5%, GCN and GIN achieved similar accuracy, with an average score of 95.5%. The HGCN-SIEM model outperforms with an optimum accuracy of 98.8%, ensures low latency, and provides a well-balanced mix of rapid attack detection and the best utilization of the network bandwidth. SHA-256 is used to hash all process, instance, and event identifiers to protect privacy and ensure distinct, impenetrable node representations. Graph sampling, edge pruning, and adaptive batching are used to manage computational scalability in heterogeneous cloud networks, which reduces latency, increases throughput, and optimizes resource utilization during inference. This research work points out those GNN architectures that combine different node types that are extremely useful for security monitoring and malware detection in various network settings, demonstrating reliability and practicality in cybersecurity contexts.
