A Stochastic Method for Optimizing Portfolios Using a Combined Monte Carlo and Markowitz Model: Approach on Python
The main of the study is to comprehend how the mean variance efficient frontier method may be used in conjunction with Markowitz portfolio theory to produce an optimal portfolio. The study uses daily observations 8 pharma companies closing price namely Auropharma, Granules, Glaxo, Lauruslabs, Pfizer, Sanofi and Torntpharma. Further, Nifty pharma index is considered as benchmark index to check the performance of the chosen companies. The study chosen the reference period from 2020 to 2023 and required data has been extracted from the National Stock Exchange (NSE). This research is based on implementing a stochastic method for efficient portfolio optimisation employing a blended Monte Carlo and Markowitz model. In order to forecast the price of these indices in the future and to determine the likelihood of profit or loss while investing in a portfolio of stocks representing the aforementioned indices, the study also uses Monte Carlo simulation. The study involves two algorithms, namely the deterministic optimisation algorithm, which uses Markowitz Portfolio Theory, and the probabilistic optimisation algorithm, which uses Monte Carlo simulation. The study employed correlation matrix to find the exist relationship between the chosen companies and benchmark index. Also, expected return and volatility has been identified with the help of standard deviation using Python. The study found that the NIFTY Pharma index offers a higher return of 14.35. In addition to this, NIFTY Pharma portfolio's volatility is considerably higher. Finding balance in a digital world: Equanimity as a predictor of nomophobia
The present study examined the relationship between equanimity and nomophobia. The study also examined the differences in experience of nomophobia considering gender, education and employment status. The sample included 216 emerging adults (M = 64, F = 152) from across India. The Equanimity Scale 16 and the Nomophobia Questionnaire were used to measure equanimity and nomophobia, respectively. Mann-Whitney-U test and Rank-Biserial coefficient indicated that gender differences significantly affected the losing connectedness factor of nomophobia. Correlation analysis showed that equanimity had a significant negative relationship with nomophobia and its factors- not being able to access information, giving up convenience and losing connectedness. Regression analysis showed equanimity as a significant predictor of nomophobia. The studys findings hold potential implications for equanimity-based interventions for nomophobia and individual well-being, technological design improvements in the digital age and unfolds areas for future research. 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. -

It exemplifies how new-age ventures can position themselves to attract investments and how venture capital firms use environmental scanning to identify potential investment opportunities. Designed for second-year MBA students, the case assumes familiarity with strategic management concepts like Porters Five Force and Resource-Based View. Case Overview: Amala Menon is a seasoned venture capitalist, strategist, sustainability enthusiast, and founder of Samrithi VentureCaptial and has been actively looking out for investment opportunities in the Electronic Vehicle (EV) space. Believing in the huge potential and the push received by supportive government policies in India, Amala is assessing Ola Electric Mobility Pvt. Ltd (Ola Electric) as an investable option among a list of growing players in the space. A wholly owned subsidiary of ANI Technologies Pvt. Ltd, the parent company of Ola Cabs, Ola Electric, valued at USD 5 billion as of 2022, was founded in 2017 to facilitate mass electric mobility and hence reduce emission and fuel dependency. Though crunching financial metrics and valuation numbers come in during assessing an investment option, she strongly emphasizes evaluating the organizations readiness to obtain further funding in terms of its management team, the potential of the business model and several other crucial parameters. Citrus Medica-derived Fluorescent Carbon Dots for the Imaging of Vigna Radiate Root Cells
Bio-imaging is a crucial tool for researchers in the fields of cell biology and developmental biomedical sector. Among the various available imaging techniques, fluorescence based imaging stands out due to its high sensitivity and specificity. However, traditional fluorescent materials used in biological imaging often suffer from issues such as photostability and biocompatibility. Moreover, plant tissues contain compounds that cause autofluorescence and light scattering, which can hinder fluorescence microscopy effectiveness. This study explores the development of fluorescent carbon dots (Cm-CDs) synthesized from Citrus medica fruit extract for the fluorescence imaging of Vigna radiata root cells. The successful synthesis of CDs with an average size of 6.7nm is confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and raman spectroscopy indicated that the obtained CDs are amorphous in nature. The presence of various functional groups on the surface of CDs were identified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. The optical characteristics of Cm-CDs were studied by UV-Visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Cm-CDs demonstrated strong excitation-dependent fluorescence, good solubility, and effective penetration in to the Vigna radiata root cells with multicolor luminescence, and addressed autofluorescence issues. Additionally, a comparative analysis determined the optimal concentration for high-resolution, multi-color root cell imaging, with Cm-CD2 (2.5mg/ml) exhibiting the highest photoluminescence (PL) intensity. These findings highlight the potential of Cm-CDs in enhancing direct endocytosis and overcoming autofluorescence in plant cell imaging, offering promising advancements for cell biology research. Social-cognitive Skills Training on Interpersonal Understanding of Social Norms During Adolescence
Background: Social-cognitive skills training (SCST) in a therapeutic setup can result in more positive outcomes when incorporated with psychotherapy, especially among adolescents with minor social-cognitive impairments in their social interactions. It may result in multifarious benefits to mitigate their social-cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to identify the effects of SCST on interpersonal understanding of social norms in adolescents with low social cognition. Methods: In this quasi-experimental research, 80 adolescents (1019 years) with low social cognition, no previous experience of skills training, and absence of any psychological disorders, especially those that affect their social-cognitive functioning, with assent from the participants and written informed consent from the parents/guardian and a score below 58 on the Need For Social-Cognition Scale, were included. They were randomly allocated into SCST or waitlist control group. SCST consists of 20 sessions with indoor activities, games, and discussions, and it has been arranged for 1 hour per 3 days a week for 3 months. Edinburgh social cognition test (ESCoT) was used to assess the degree of interpersonal understanding of social norms among adolescents as part of pre and posttests. Results: The Wilcoxon Sign Ranked Test showed that the interpersonal understanding of social norms after SCST is significantly higher than the interpersonal understanding of social norms SCST with a large effect size. The mean (standard deviation) scores in the ESCoT test improved significantly (P < 0.001) following [W = 0.001, P <.001, r = 1.000]. Conclusion: SCST effectively improves the interpersonal understanding of social norms, an essential developmental milestone during adolescence. It highlights the importance of focusing on mental health as a developmental asset that can influence social-cognitive development in the future. 2024 The Author(s). -
Exploring the motivating factors for opportunity recognition among social entrepreneurs: aqualitative study
Purpose: This paper explores the motivating factors that lead to opportunity recognition among social entrepreneurs in India. Design/methodology/approach: The study followed an exploratory, qualitative design based on thematic analysis of the interview data collected from 13 Indian social entrepreneurs. Findings: The study identifies two aggregate factors that motivate social entrepreneurs: personal and contextual. Personal factors include life experiences, social awareness, social inclination since childhood, spiritual motives, the need for a meaningful career and entrepreneurial intention. Contextual factors included institutional voids, community development, the presence of a role model and volunteer experiences. Research limitations/implications: This study contributes to the social entrepreneurship literature by providing a model for motivating factors that lead to opportunity recognition. This study enables policymakers and social entrepreneurship educators to identify aspiring social entrepreneurs and provide target-specific support to them. PICTURE PROCESSING ON ISOMETRIC FUZZY REGULAR ARRAY LANGUAGES
Isometric array grammar is one of the simplest model to generate picture languages, since both sides of its production rule have the same shape. In this paper, we have introduced isometric fuzzy regular array grammars to generate isometric fuzzy regular array languages and discussed its closure properties. Also, the relation between isometric fuzzy regular array grammar and boustrophedon fuzzy finite automata has been discussed. Moreover, we study the relation between two dimensional fuzzy regular grammars with returning fuzzy finite automata and boustrophedon fuzzy finite automata. Molecular docking study, and ADMET analysis for the synthesized novel Zn(II) complexes as potential SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors
A new SARS-CoV-2 virus and its variants including omicron created a pandemic situation and caused more deaths in worldwide prompted many researchers to explore potential drug candidates. In this connection, we explored the first-of-its-kind report on computational studies such as molecular docking, and ADMET properties of Zn(II) complexes. The studies revealed the novel zinc complexes have high binding affinities with the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein (6vxx) alpha variant (7EKF), beta variant (7ekg), gamma variant (7EKC), delta variant (7V8B), and the omicron variant (7T9J). Molecular docking results of RMSD for SARS-CoV-2 beta variant (7ekg) and gamma variant (7EKC) are within excellent chemical stability in their protein-ligand complex state and should be effective in the biological system. ADME studies provided the better results with no adverse effect of toxicity related AMES along with absence of hepatotoxicity and skin sensitization when compared to Molnupiravir drug and it has a greater hepatotoxicity. Unheard and Unseen: Exploring the Disenfranchisement of Perinatal Loss in North-Indian Men
Mental distress is recognised as common following perinatal loss. But often, existing literature and bereavement care standards focus on women, leaving a gap in understanding mens grief. This qualitative study examined the emotional experiences of males from some Northern states of India, who had experienced perinatal loss, with a focus on grief disenfranchisement. Eleven participants were interviewed using a semi-structured guide. Thematic analysis unveiled themes on the intersection of religiosity and grief, social structuring of grief patterns, gender-based grieving, inhibited expression of grief in men, disenfranchisement of grief, self-focused coping, coping with the help of others, and interpersonal barriers to emotional disclosure. The findings provide valuable insights, helping mental health practitioners better understand mens experiences of perinatal loss and develop more effective support strategies. 2024 SAGE Publications. -
Parental Expectations and Fear of Negative Evaluation Among Indian Emerging Adults: The Mediating Role of Maladaptive Perfectionism
Background: Contrary to traditional notions of emerging adulthood as a period free from parental pressures, the prolonged transition to adulthood in contemporary society implies that parental influence remains a significant factor in the lives of emerging adults. This presents a potential challenge to emerging adults, as navigating independence while managing parental expectations can result in adverse psychological outcomes. The present study examined the relationship between perceived parental expectations and fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and the mediating role of maladaptive perfectionism. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 466 emerging adults from India between 18 and 25 years old. They responded to the Perception of Parental Expectations Inventory, the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism-Brief Scale, and the Brief Fear of Negative EvaluationStraightforward Items Scale. Results: Correlation analyses revealed significant, positive associations between perceived parental expectations, maladaptive perfectionism, and FNE. Findings from regression analyses indicated that increased perceptions of parental expectations and maladaptive perfectionism predicted increased levels of FNE. The relationship between perceived parental expectations and FNE was fully mediated by maladaptive perfectionism. Conclusion: A key reason for heightened perceptions of parental expectations associated with increased FNE is that emerging adults tend to adopt unrealistic perfectionistic standards. Maladaptive perfectionism represents a vital intervention target for individuals who perceive elevated parental expectations and are at risk for FNE, offering promising avenues for promoting well-being in emerging adults. 2024 The Author(s). -
Perspectives on the Intersection of Gender, Customary Laws and Land Rights in India
For centuries, tribal communities in India have maintained distinct social and cultural identities, often with communal land ownership practices that were inclusive of women. The struggle of tribal women in India for land rights is a poignant manifestation of their fight against intersecting forms of oppression rooted in patriarchy, traditional power structures, and historical marginalisation. Given the existing background, this article discusses the intersection of property rights and gender relations in India, making a case for independent property rights for tribal women. It analyses the role of customary laws of inheritance in a legal pluralistic India and its conflict with positive law. The article also focuses on the role of the Indian judiciary in remedying the systemic discrimination against tribal women in India. A Multifaceted Approach at Discerning Redditors Feelings Towards ChatGPT
Generative AI platforms like ChatGPT have leapfrogged in terms of technological advancements. Traditional methods of scrutiny are not enough for assessing their technological efficacy. Understanding public sentiment and feelings towards ChatGPT is crucial for pre-empting the technologys longevity and impact while also providing a silhouette of human psychology. Social media platforms have seen tremendous growth in recent years, resulting in a surge of user-generated content. Among these platforms, Reddit stands out as a forum for users to engage in discussions on various topics, including Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) and chatbots. Traditional pedagogy for social media sentiment analysis and opinion mining are time consuming and resource heavy, while lacking representation. This paper provides a novice multifrontal approach that utilises and integrates various techniques for better results. The data collection and preparation are done through the Reddit API in tandem with multi-stage weighted and stratified sampling. NLP (Natural Language processing) techniques encompassing LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation), Topic modelling, STM (Structured Topic Modelling), sentiment analysis and emotional analysis using RoBERTa are deployed for opinion mining. To verify, substantiate and scrutinise all variables in the dataset, multiple hypothesises are tested using ANOVA, T-tests, KruskalWallis test, Chi-Square Test and MannWhitney U test. Narrativity and the Problematics of Authenticity in Hungry Ghosts by Kevin Jared Hosein
Postcolonial historical fictions, set in turbulent times, grapple with the question of authenticity in their fictional representations of events and individuals of the past. Trinidadian novelist Kevin Jared Hoseins Hungry Ghosts (2023), set in the estate barracks and surrounding milieu of 1940s Trinidad, is no exception. The paper argues for a nuanced understanding of the term authenticity in our reading of historical fictions, and explores Hoseins use of the formal, imaginative and affective dimensions of narration in negotiating representational adequacy and strengthening the significant thematic concerns in the text. Through textual analysis, the paper explores how Hosein situates his text firmly within the spatio-temporal reality of the period and captures the struggles of becoming confronting a population whose lives are coloured by historical trauma and continuing spatial hierarchy. 2024 The Editorial Board, Current Writing. -
A Cross-sectional Study for Examining Catastrophic Healthcare Expenditure Across Socio-demographic Variables among Employees in a Sedentary Occupation
Health expenditure above a certain threshold level can result in a financial catastrophe by reducing the expenses on necessities. Certain socio-demographic variables have been observed to play a role in influencing catastrophic healthcare expenditure, guiding the present study to examine this scenario for employees in sedentary occupations. A cross-sectional study has been conducted among 370 employees recruited through a random sampling technique. Multinomial logistic regression was used to test the main objective of the study. The factors associated with a higher probability of catastrophic healthcare expenditure were males with increasing age. Years of work experience tend to be associated with a lower likelihood of catastrophic healthcare expenditure. No conclusive evidence could be drawn for BMI, income, marital status and education. 2024 Indian Journal of Community Medicine. -
Analytical study of triple diffusive convection in a bi-viscous Bingham fluid layer using Ginzburg-Landau model
In this paper, considering bi-viscous Bingham as the base fluid, we study the thermophysical-properties (such as density, specific heat, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal expansion) with different combinations of salts among NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, and NaCl2 of triple diffusive convection in a bi-viscous Bingham fluid layer with heat as one of the diffusing components. A weakly non-linear case is formulated to facilitate a solution to the problem using a series solution Ginzburg-Landau model. With regard to single, double, and triple diffusive convection, the tables are made to record the actual values of thermophysical-properties together with the critical Rayleigh-number for each combination of aqueous-salt solutions. This computation calculates the mean Nusselt and Sherwood numbers to quantify the systems heat- and mass-transfers for various aqueous-solutions. The effect of the bi-viscous Bingham fluid parameter, for small and large values, for different aqueous-solutions, in single, double, and triple diffusive convection has been captured via 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) figures and the results are recorded and compared. The investigation reveals that the heat- and mass-transfers increase with an increase or decrease in the bi-viscous Bingham fluid parameter, which in turn depends on the values of (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.) Moderating role of location autonomy on technostress and subjective wellbeing in information technology companies
Integrating digital tools into day-to-day work activities has become an undeniable reality. However, the unprecedented reliance on technology has brought with it the escalating degrees of technostress evident through health concerns like chronic musculoskeletal problems and decreased job satisfaction. And the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the negative impact, as IT industries adopted the hybrid workplace approach, especially in developing countries like India. This paper aims to find whether location autonomy moderates the effect of technostress on subjective wellbeing among IT employees working in a hybrid model. A purposive sampling method gathered 440 responses from IT professionals in Bengaluru tech parks. IBM SPSS and AMOS software were used to assess the constructs by SEM analysis, in line with the job demand-control theory. The results showed that location autonomy accounts for 31.6% of the variance in subjective wellbeing, while technostress explains 33.2% of the variance, with dimensions ranging from 21% to 46%. Additionally, location autonomy moderates and strengthens the link between technostress and subjective wellbeing. The study recommends that organizational leaders adopt HR policies that allow employees to choose their workplace rather than mandating a specific location for scheduled days in the week. This approach can potentially improve overall employee wellbeing, offering a favorable resolution to the challenges posed by technostress in the IT industry. A novel discrete slash family of distributions with application to epidemiology informatics data
This study puts forward a new class of discrete distribution that can be used by the epidemiologists and medical scientists to model data relating to epidemiology informatics. The proposed distribution is superior to traditional discrete modeling alternatives, viz., discrete Weibull and geometric distributions in terms of its model fit and flexibility to handle heavy-tailed dataset. It is a flexible three-parameter discrete distribution, grounded in the slash family and can be considered as a refined extension to the geometric distribution. We explored the diverse properties of this novel distribution thoroughly by evaluating the mathematical properties. The models parameters are estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation method, where the methodology validity is confirmed through an extensive simulation study. Furthermore, the practical utility of the distribution to model epidemiology informatics was examined with the help of eight different datasets representing three different dimensions of the epidemiology informatics, viz., mortality, infection and medication statistics.
