Navigating the intersection of global climate change and mental health
The ecological equilibrium of the globe is under grave danger from the unprecedented global climate change problem, which has far-reaching consequences for both human society and the natural world. The complex relationship between climate change and mental health is discussed in this abstract, along with its direct and indirect effects, the ways in which different groups are vulnerable, strategies for coping, policy implications, and potential directions for further study. Direct trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders are direct outcomes of immediate effects, such as severe weather occurrences and the evacuation of entire communities. At the same time, widespread eco-anxiety is overwhelming people's minds and leading to persistent uneasiness. This abstract dives into the mental toll, looking at how indigenous people, youth, and children experience cultural displacement and forced migration, as well as the grieving over biodiversity loss. A wide range of responses, from mindfulness practices on an individual level to community-based resilience programs, are emerging in response to the climate crisis. The abstract highlights the importance of education in fostering understanding and resilience, particularly among younger generations. It stresses the importance of international cooperation and calls for the inclusion of mental health concerns in climate change strategies 2024, IGI Global. All rights reserved. -
Revolutionizing healthcare telemedicine's global technological integration
The pursuit of universal and high-quality healthcare services is a fundamental obligation of any responsible state, yet India faces persistent challenges in achieving this goal despite governmental efforts and policies. Notably, the 65th World Health Assembly emphasized universal health coverage (UHC) as pivotal for global public health advancement. Addressing this, a 2010 high-level expert group identified impediments in UHC implementation, highlighting issues such as health financing, infrastructure, skilled human resources, and access to medicines. This study focuses on exploring telemedicine's potential to mitigate these challenges and become instrumental in realizing universal health coverage in India. It aims to scrutinize government plans, critically assess policies on telemedicine implementation, and propose effective integration models, particularly in rural areas, to facilitate UHC. Additionally, the research aims to examine the role of AI, ML, deep learning, and neutral networks within telemedicine, envisaging their contribution to augmenting telemedicine's efficacy towards achieving universal health coverage in India. 2024, IGI Global. Neuroleadership strategies: Elevating motivation and engagement among employees
In the ever-evolving landscape of the modern era, organizations face the ongoing challenge of maintaining motivated and engaged employees. Despite the substantial body of research on this topic, many organizations still struggle to effectively promote engagement and motivation among their employees. This research aims to investigate the application of neuroleadership strategies in addressing this issue. The SCARF model, based on neuroscience principles, provides a valuable framework for understanding neuroleadership strategies which address social and emotional triggers that impact engagement and motivation. It can be effectively used to drive motivation and engagement in the workplace by addressing the fundamental social and emotional needs of employees. This study employs a quantitative approach which assesses the 321 employees from different organizations in India. The results of the study would provide leaders with practical insights to boost motivation and engagement in organizations and thereby improve the effectiveness of the organization. 2024, IGI Global. Navigating resource scarcity in a changing climate: AI-powered perspectives on mental health
In the backdrop of the extensive global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental crises have, to a certain degree, taken a back seat. The pandemic-induced scarcity mindset, emphasizing immediate short-term needs over long-term considerations, has played a role in this shift in priorities. This scarcity mindset, prevalent during the pandemic, poses a risk to pro-environmental behavior and may contribute to environmental degradation, thereby heightening the likelihood of future pandemics. This chapter advocates for a reevaluation of pro-environmental actions, emphasizing their role in addressing various human needs, especially during periods of scarcity. AI-driven chatbots possess the capability to significantly enhance accessibility to affordable and efficient mental health services by complementing the efforts of clinicians. To safeguard pro-environmental behavior, we propose a reconceptualization that positions these actions not merely as value-laden or effortful but as pragmatic measures essential for resource conservation, particularly in times of scarcity. The study explores, the intricate dynamics of resource scarcity, climate change, and mental health, employing AI-powered perspectives to navigate this complex interplay. 2024, IGI Global. Service learning as a pedagogical strategy: A case study on disability inclusion
Diversity and inclusion are the growing concerns of society and every organisation including higher educational institutions (HEIs) is designing strategies to ensure diversity equality and inclusion (DEI). To understand how students engage with the idea of disability and inclusion in education, this study explores the journey of undergraduate students with an organization for visually challenged students. This qualitative, descriptive study used interviews and focus group discussion (FGD) along with the analysis of chosen reflective journals. SL activities enabled students to reflect on the learning challenges faced by the visually challenged students as well as their caretakers. This also made them reflect on the larger academic environment at the higher education level and come up with suggestions to make the HEIs more inclusive for the visually challenged. This study emphasizes the nature of their engagement and the transformative aspects of the learning process that they experienced by focusing on the students' experiences and challenges. 2024, IGI Global. Exploring student perspectives on service learning: Their expectations, challenges, and perceived benef
Many students foresee that a service-learning course would help them to participate in the development of the community, addressing its real concerns. On the other hand, students anticipate individual growth in terms of personal, interpersonal, and societal skills. However, service-learning also throws up some concerns and challenges. Thus, it is very important for educational institutions to understand the challenges in the planning and execution phase and reap a positive impact from the service-learning course. A qualitative research technique is adopted and the responses are grouped into themes for better evaluation of the factors. The current research surveyed 290 respondents to understand students' expectations and benefits from service learning. It throws light on the challenges that need attention to harness its benefits. Addressing these issues and expectations would enhance students' engagement and elevate the benefits for all the stakeholders. 2024, IGI Global. All rights reserved. -
Using service learning to fuel multi-disciplinary research in Indian HEIs: A novel approach
The current work proposes a novel approach that can allow Indian HEIs to offer service-learning-based curricula while enhancing the institutional research output. The proposed model suggests a unique linkage between existing volunteer and academic departments at institutions of higher education such that data already being generated through existing outreach programs can be utilised for meaningful social science research. The proposed model thus utilizes existing resources already available with an institution to bolster research output, enhances the institutional capacity to include a pedagogical approach with proven benefits, and facilitates institutional compliance with regulatory directives mandating the inclusion of Service-learning-based courses at UG and PG levels. 2024, IGI Global.
