Indicators of corporate financial distress: Evidence from India
The study aims to identify the indicators of corporate financial distress in the Indian industrial sector. The study begins by analysing the corporate bankruptcy filings and the outcomes of filings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016. From the analysis of bankruptcy filings, a list of 82 publicly listed companies of industrial nature experiencing financial distress that have filed for bankruptcy under IBC is identified. Each of the 82 companies are paired with an equal number of matching financially sound companies to form a sample of 164 companies. Further, 12 variables from the annual reports of the sample companies are analysed for a period of five years immediately preceding the bankruptcy filing by the distressed companies. Simple regression analysis is employed for determining the primary indicator of corporate financial distress and logistic regression analysis is used to identify the supplementary indicator of corporate financial distress in the Indian industrial sector. The primary and the supplementary indicators are presented in the form of a two-stageprocess to form the Corporate Distress Prediction (CDP) scorecard. The recommended CDP scorecard predicts financial distress in the Indian industrial sector at an accuracy ranging between 90 percent to 100 percent during the five years of study. The major implication of the study is that it can guide the corporate stakeholders in knowing the financial health of a company. -
Antecedents and consequences of overconfidence bias of stock market investors in Kerala
Keeping in mind the dynamic changes that have been taking place in the Indian stock market, since the emergence of technology, the advancement of the internet even into the remote regions of the country and active involvement of regulators like SEBI, the proposed study is designed to determine the antecedents of overconfidence bias of stock market investors and its consequences on their investment activities. -
Adoption of cashless payment systems among consumers
The primary goal of any national payment system is to ensure smooth circulation of money. It is recognized worldwide that an efficient and secure payment system triggers the economic activity. Efficiency in payment systems in general and electronic payment systems in particular, benefits both customer and country’s economic growth. There are diverse payment systems functioning in the country, ranging from the paper-based systems where the instruments are physically exchanged and settlements worked out manually to the most sophisticated electronic fund transfer systems which are fully secured and transactions settled on a gross, real time basis. Many researchers have used various technology adoption models to predict the adoption of a technology. The main purpose of the study is to investigate the key driving factors responsible for the consumers’ adoption of cashless payment system. A descriptive study method using the paradigm of post - positivism was employed in the study with a sample of 390 respondents from Bangalore who have already used cashless payments. These consumers were selected by purposive sampling using snowball sampling. The study is based on both primary and secondary sources of information collected from various sources. -
Development and implementation of algorithm for image preprocessing and microorganism
The digital revolution has changed most aspects of modern life. Nowhere has the change been more fundamental than in the field of microscopy. Researchers who use the microscope in their investigations have been among the pioneers who applied digital processing techniques to images. Vision is most powerful of the five senses of human being. Digitized visual information provides high impact on the subject. Digital image processing is concerned with the extraction of useful information from images. Visual information from microscopic images of microorganisms is analyzed regularly. This has resulted in a need to understand and implement digital processing on microscopic images. The purpose of this thesis is to bring new digital image processing techniques for the noise removal of microscopic image of microorganisms. The digitized image processing includes image representation; improving image quality by removing noise; and enhancing the quality of microscopic images. -
Impact of functional inter-dependency on employee satisfaction with performance appraisal in real estate industry
Earlier researches have consistently underlined an intrinsic proportionate relationship between the success of an organization and the effort put in by the employees towards the attainment of the set goals for success. An employee with a higher level of job satisfaction tends to be more positively disposed and productive in the work place, than the opposite of it. A positively charged wok atmosphere contributes much to the overall growth of an organization and is the result of the satisfaction level enjoyed by employees. One major factor that determines employee satisfaction is the organization’s system in place to reward and recognise the employee through performance appraisal. Genuine unbiased performance appraisal tends to bolster the performance of employees. Thus, performance appraisal is one of the most widely researched areas in industrial/organizational psychology (Murphy & Cleveland, 1995). Recent studies among employees indicate several inadequacies with the current performance appraisal system in use as it does not measure the performance in all directions. Thus, there seems to be a gap that needs exploration. Employee’s deliverables depend on external and internal factors. Functional interdependence is one such internal factor which influences the performance of the employee. However, there is limited knowledge available on the role of interdependency factors in the performance of the employee during the performance review. This article presents a conceptual framework to understand the role of functional interdependence in the performance appraisal and the satisfaction of the employee whose deliverables are highly functional interdependence. -
Synthesis, Spectroscopic and DFT studies of some benzimidazole and bemzothiazole derivatives
Benzimidazole, benzothiazole and benzoxazole compounds and their derivatives having azole moieties are biologically active and are extensively used in pharmaceutical industry. Benzimidazoles / benzothiazoles scaffolds have also been widely used as −spacers and
donor/acceptor units. The lone pair electrons and conjugated structures of these heterocyclic molecules assist in tuning of electronic properties enabling their use in devices like dye sensitized solar cells, organic light emitting diodes etc. However, the design and synthesis of organic ligands for these applications is still a challenging task. Though we have made an effort in this direction fabricating a dye sensitized solar cell with benzimidazole based sensitizer, the moderate Stokes shift and efficiency prompted us to tune these molecules and improve their electronic properties. Considering that some of the benzimidazole / benzothiazole fluorophores possessing metal-ion chelating properties and having hydrogen donor-acceptor sites in close proximity play vital role in sensor and bioimaging applications, we have designed and synthesized novel fluorophores for metal ion sensing applications. Since most of the available literature shows studies on fluorophores with single excited state intramolecular proton transfer sites or dual proton transfer sites with symmetrical structures, we have considered investigating fluorophores having asymmetrical structures and proton donating sites. In this perspective, we have synthesized and conducted spectroscopic and density functional theory studies on some novel fluorophores based on benzimidazole / benzothiazole Schiff bases and the details are presented in this thesis. -
ABL as a linguistic pedagogy-An experimental study of acquisition of English language among primary school children
The history of English language teaching has been regarded as a pursuit for more effective ways of teaching and learning. The teaching profession has held constant discussions and debates over issues like framing effective learning strategies,techniques for teaching the four skills to the students, choice of curriculum frameworks, materials available for effective English language teaching, role of grammar and vocabulary in English classrooms, teaching English language using technology, improvement of fluency and accuracy during the process of language learning and so on. English language experts are constantly engaged in clarifying these areas including the search for an appropriate approach of teaching English language effectively in classrooms. -

The higher education sector has undergone major changes throughout India which has led to increase in competition for institutions in this sector. Thus, there is a need to find ways to attract and retain the potential and current students. Student loyalty is crucial to create sustainable competitive advantage. Student loyalty is widely accepted as a critical factor in the long term economic success of an educational institution that aims at positive recommendation (word of mouth) by students and attracting the students back to the institution for further studies. Review of literature reveals that service quality, price fairness, customer value, customer satisfaction and affective commitment are key antecedents to customer loyalty. -
A study on socio-economics impact of remittances on forward migrants household of the Tibetan refugees in India /
Migration and Development is an agenda of every country’s economic policy in recent time. Migration has been linked to the flow of remittances influencing socio-economic development particularly of developing countries. Studies on remittances have also reflected its positive side having potential effect at all levels including micro (households), macro (country) and meso (community) levels. The existing literature on remittance manifested the prominent role of remittance in enhancing livelihood of receiving households. Empirical study conducted on developing economies concluded that households receiving remittances are better off than those of non-receiving households. -

Organizational success is determined by work engagement and psychological well-being of the workforce. Efficient leadership and a healthy teaching environment determine the professional conduct of school teachers. Work engagement not only reflects teachers’ performance but also implies the performance of pupils and the school. Work engagement depends on the congeniality of the working conditions. The present study explores work engagement of 516 secondary school teachers working in Bengaluru, India. -
Development and standardization of a tool to assess spirituality in families for family based interventions /
The aim of the study was to develop and standardize a tool for family spiritual assessment. The sample consisted of 1502 Indian participants which included members from three religious backgrounds namely: Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. The data collected through face-to-face interview was analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), t-test and ANOVA. A five-item Likert-type tool developed was named as Family Spiritual Assessment Scale (FSAS) through a process of item development. -
Linear and nonlinear convection in magnetic fluids /
The thesis deals with linear and nonlinear Rayleigh-Benard ferroconvection in a horizontal porous layer. Modified Darcy law is used to describe the fluid motion. The effect of chemical reaction, temperature modulation, gravity modulation and finite amplitudes on the onset of Darcy ferroconvection is considerd. The findings of the problems addressed in the thesis may come in handy for heat transfer application situations with ferromagnetic fluids as working medium. -

Models for load forecasting and demand response /
Increasing pressure on the utilities to accommodate energy efficiency, load management and progress in advanced technology has led to transformations of existing grids into smarter grids. With the development of Smart Grid Technology and the integration of smart meters it is possible to control the equipment installed at the consumer site. Creating awareness among the end users to participate in load management programs instead of capacity addition is the best solution for maintaining the stability in the grid. Utilities can also encourage consumer participation in load control activities. They can ensure that power is given to a consumer during his priority time. For this, loads have to be categorized, prioritized and then considered for load shedding so that revenue loss and social impacts of load shedding are minimized. It would be beneficial if a consumer's load is not completely shed during load shedding. Amount of power that is shed from a consumer can be limited and consumers can be allowed to adjust their loads based on the availability of power and get incentives from the utilities for their change in load pattern. Consumers are also benefited with the reduced energy charges on the consumed energy during these periods. -
Fluorescence diffuse optical tomography: Synthesis, characterization and imaging of a novel target specific near infra-red contrast agent for breast cancer detection /
A paradigm shift is seen for cancer treatment since many decades in developing safe and efficient techniques to prevent, detect, treat and cure cancer worldwide. However, there is still a long way to stabilize the rate of cancer occurrence. Breast cancer is found to be among the top three cancer types in terms of incidence and fifth in terms of mortality. An estimate of 2.1 million new cases of breast cancer was recorded in the International Agency for Research on Cancer [IARC] Report 2018. Close to a half (43.6%) of all breast cancers were diagnosed within the Asia-Pacific region (approximately 911014 cases), with the greatest number of those occurring in China, Japan and Indonesia. Although the prognosis is relatively favorable, at least in more developed countries, early diagnosis is the lifesaver. Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) is one of the emerging diagnostic tools for early detection of breast cancer. It uses near infra-red (NIR) light to probe human soft tissues and is capable of continuous monitoring of the patient. DOT is cheaper, compact and uses non-ionizing radiation unlike its counterparts like CT-Scan, Mammogram and PET scan. The potential of DOT can be enhanced by using a NIR exogenous contrast agents, and the system is known as Fluorescence-DOT (FDOT). Indocyanine Green (ICG) is a popular FDA approved dye available in the market which is explored for cancer detection using FDOT. But, with its non-specific nature, there was a need for a specific and functionally orientated dye to further improve the efficacy of FDOT imaging.
