Navigating Global Poverty in the midst of Rising Income Inequality: A Human Security Approach
From the dawn of civilization, poverty has been a predominant concern. Among them, the post-Second World War welfare state policies and economic development had a significant effect. Scientific and technological advancements and economic growth increased the GDP of almost all countries. However, it also widened the gap between the rich and the poor. This became evident with neoliberalism, privatization, and deregulation of the economy. The private assets increased enormously, losing the public sector's control over the economic interactions. As a result, income and wealth inequality increased rapidly. The World Inequality Report (2022) affirms the massive concentration of income and wealth in the hands of a few individuals. It adversely affects poverty alleviation strategies as poverty increases along with the rising income inequality. The World Bank (2024) affirms this precarious situation. From this perspective, this chapter examines the significance of the human security approach in addressing these human insecurities. 2026, IGI Global Scientific Publishing. All rights reserved. -

Navigating Hope and Despair: The Agonizing Boat Journeys of the Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees
This study investigates the psychological experiences of Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees (SLTRs) involving boat journeys and the refugee lives that follow. Thirty participants from rehabilitation camps in Tamil Nadu, India, were interviewed. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze the responses. The two overarching themes were 'the motives and consequences of exile' and 'the complexities of refugee life.' The findings reveal that the participants experienced psychosomatic symptoms immediately upon arrival, reflecting the inner conflicts resulting from war trauma and boat crossings. They reported serious bouts of trauma during and after their crossing. The first- and second-generation participants recounted nightmares pertaining to boat journeys which contributed to hauntedness, which is a state of emotional or mental disturbance often attributed to past trauma. Refugee life is complex, encompassing hopelessness and haunted memories which are passed down to subsequent generations, leading to intergenerational trauma. The boat journey in itself is an ambivalent phenomenon blending hope and profound agony. This study is a novel attempt to gain coherent insights into the boat travel experiences of the SLTR, the dynamics of the interplay of collective unconscious mechanisms, and anxieties in exile. These insights can play a seminal role in facilitating psychological reconstruction and developing effective coping strategies. Navigating New Culture: The Role of Attachment Styles in the Adaptation of International Students in India
Background: International students frequently look for programmes that are not offered in their home countries in order to pursue high-quality education, cultural exposure, professional prospects and personal development while studying abroad. Understanding attachment styles enables people to better comprehend local norms and values, facilitating easier social interactions and minimising misunderstandings, even though adjusting to the host country might be difficult. Purpose: The present study aimed to explore the relationship between attachment styles and sociocultural adaptation among international students in the host country. The studys specific goal was to comprehend how different attachment styles affect international students adjustment to new cultural customs, social norms and values. Methods: The study included 240 international students (male = 120 and female = 120) enrolled in various universities and educational institutions in Varanasi City, Uttar Pradesh, through purposive sampling. Participants were selected between the ages of 19 and 35 years. The Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ) and Revised Sociocultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS-R) were used in data collection. Results: The findings show that secure attachment style increased sociocultural adaptation, whereas insecure attachment styles decreased it among international students in the host country. A secure attachment style offers consolation, confidence and strong social bonds, all of which significantly enhance international students sociocultural adaptation in India. Conclusion: Social integration of international students may be greatly aided by planning inclusive cultural activities that promote engagement, lower social barriers and create a friendly atmosphere. Educational institutions may foster cross-cultural understanding and improve the overall campus experience for both domestic and international students by giving priority to such efforts. Navigating Queer Subjectivities: Identity Negotiation and Spatial Constraints Among Sexual Minority Women in Kerala, India
Psychological theories often conceptualise identity as a coherent, interiorised essence, a framing that constrains the fluid and relational experiences of sexual minority individuals. In caste-structured contexts like India, identity emerges from continual negotiation across caste, class, gender and religion rather than interior coherence. Drawing on queer phenomenology and critical intersectionality within an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), this study examines the experiences of sexual minority women in Kerala as they negotiate their identities through sociospatial regulation. Semistructured interviews revealed identity negotiation as a constant interplay of disorientation, reorientation and subversion articulated through three major themes: (a) spatially induced dilemma, which includes dilemmas about self-expression, dissonance in corporeal schema and out-of-sync temporality; (b) navigating spatial constraints, marked by layered and anticipatory shame, religious and ideological tensions, disembodiment shaped by structurally embedded shame materialising as internalised homonegativity, contested queer authenticity and affective negotiations around normativity; (c) embodied everyday acts of subjective subversion, involving flexible reorientations, agentic reworkings of failure and reimagined futures beyond dominant hetero-coherent narratives. By foregrounding nonlinearity and situated subjective subversion, this study critiques essentialist psychological models and emphasises the precarious, situated practices of queer becoming. Navigating resource scarcity in a changing climate: AI-powered perspectives on mental health
In the backdrop of the extensive global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental crises have, to a certain degree, taken a back seat. The pandemic-induced scarcity mindset, emphasizing immediate short-term needs over long-term considerations, has played a role in this shift in priorities. This scarcity mindset, prevalent during the pandemic, poses a risk to pro-environmental behavior and may contribute to environmental degradation, thereby heightening the likelihood of future pandemics. This chapter advocates for a reevaluation of pro-environmental actions, emphasizing their role in addressing various human needs, especially during periods of scarcity. AI-driven chatbots possess the capability to significantly enhance accessibility to affordable and efficient mental health services by complementing the efforts of clinicians. To safeguard pro-environmental behavior, we propose a reconceptualization that positions these actions not merely as value-laden or effortful but as pragmatic measures essential for resource conservation, particularly in times of scarcity. The study explores, the intricate dynamics of resource scarcity, climate change, and mental health, employing AI-powered perspectives to navigate this complex interplay. 2024, IGI Global.
