Navigating the need for accessible labelling through the narratives of consumers with visual impairment in India
This study aims to understand the strategies consumers with visual impairment (CWV) use in acquiring product information and explores preferences for accessible labelling and its benefits. This study employed the qualitative approach of thematic analysis. A snowball sampling technique was used to recruit participants. Data were collected from CWV through semi-structured interviews. The sample size of this study was 12. The data were analysed using NVivo software. The study revealed three strategies used by CWV to obtain product information, namely reliance on caregivers, staff, and technology. However, all the strategies employed have multiple drawbacks. The study reported a high preference for accessible labelling in braille and quick response (QR) codes. Implementing a combination of braille labels and QR codes on product packages was the most beneficial strategy for CWV. The Implementation of accessible labels ensures inclusion in the marketplace. Expressions of Women Survivors of Domestic Violence: Idioms of Distress
Domestic violence is prevalent worldwide; however, there are cultural differences in womens experiences of this phenomenon. This study used the concept of idioms of distress, to understand the impact of domestic violence on women survivors in India. A qualitative method was adopted, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with six women survivors of domestic violence. Using thematic network analysis, one global theme, four organizing themes and 19 basic themes emerged. The idioms of distress identified included, physiological idioms (such as aches and pains, nutritional deficiencies, reproductive), psychological idioms (such as depression, low self-confidence, change in aspirations and ambitions, mistrust, rumination) and behavioral idioms (such as crying, withdrawal, irritability, disturbed sleep). Of all the idioms, only nutritional deficiencies and the reproductive idioms were of concern to the survivors and their marital family. Implications for improving the screening of domestic violence are discussed based on the identified idioms and the responses toward them. 2019, National Academy of Psychology (NAOP) India. -
Direct ink writing of nickel oxide-based thin films for room temperature gas detection
The rapid industrial growth and increasing population have led to significant pollution and deterioration of the natural atmospheric environment. Major atmospheric pollutants include NO2 and CO2. Hence, it is imperative to develop NO2 and CO2 sensors for ambient conditions, that can be used in indoor air quality monitoring, breath analysis, food spoilage detection, etc. In the present study, two thin film nanocomposite (nickel oxide-graphene and nickel oxide-silver nanowires) gas sensors are fabricated using direct ink writing. The nano-composites are investigated for their structural, optical, and electrical properties. Later the nano-composite is deposited on the interdigitated electrode (IDE) pattern to form NO2 and CO2 sensors. The deposited films are then exposed to NO2 and CO2 gases separately and their response and recovery times are determined using a custom-built gas sensing setup. Nickel oxide-graphene provides a good response time and recovery time of 10 and 9 s, respectively for NO2, due to the higher electron affinity of graphene towards NO2. Nickel oxide-silver nanowire nano-composite is suited for CO2 gas because silver is an excellent electrocatalyst for CO2 by giving response and recovery times of 11 s each. This is the first report showcasing NiO nano-composites for NO2 and CO2 sensing at room temperature. 2025 Chinese Institute of Electronics. -
MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF NICKEL-GRAPHENE COMPOSITE INKS FOR JETTING PROPERTIES IN INKJET PRINTING
The droplet formation process in inkjet printing is studied numerically and verified through a simulation model. The droplet formation process decides the printing quality of the coating, and a mathematical model is developed to understand the complete process from droplet formation to detachment. The Navier-Stokes equation is used to mathematically derive the droplet radius (rnumerical). COMSOL multiphysics is used for simulation and the radius (rsimulation) is calculated from the droplet mass. The rnumerical and rsimulation are compared for inks containing nickel, graphene, and nickel-graphene composite ink it is observed that the composite ink radiuses have the lowest difference (rsimulation - rnumerical = 0.085 m). A droplet is formed at 1.47 mm from the nozzle inlet, for nickel-graphene ink, and after 1.5mm for other pristine inks. The results are verified through Z number, velocity profile, and droplet mass. The droplet formation observed from the velocity profile is earliest at 120 s. It is seen that a stable droplet is generated at 100s for nickel-graphene ink and at 200 s for individual inks. 2024 Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. All rights reserved. -
Formulation of Nickel OxideGraphene Composite Ink and the Fabrication of Thin-Film Electrodes Using Direct Ink Writing
Nickel oxide (NiO) is a p-type material with a wide bandgap of 3.6 to 4eV, and graphene is a zero-bandgap material. When the two materials are combined to form a composite, their structural, optical, and electrical properties are enhanced. This work presents the formulation of nickel oxide (NiO)graphene composite ink (with ethylene glycol as a solvent) for the fabrication of thin-film electrodes using a direct ink writing technique. NiO is used in nanopowder form, which is prepared via a wet-chemical approach. NiO ink is prepared in three different concentrations of 40mg/ml (N1), 60mg/ml (N2), and 70mg/ml (N3). Graphene ink (G) is also prepared in concentrations of 0.5mg/ml (G1), 1mg/ml (G2), and 2mg/ml (G3). Among the pure NiO inks, it was observed that low resistance and uniform printing were obtained for N2. Therefore, N2 is mixed with different concentrations of graphene to form the composite ink, which is further printed on the substrates. The rheological properties of all the formulated inks are measured. An extrusion-based direct-write system is employed for printing the inks on a glass substrate. The printed samples are characterized before and after annealing at 250C for 2h. The resistance of the composite ink (N2G1) is decreased by 53% in comparison with the pure NiO ink (N2). As the conductivity of the composite ink thin film is in the range of M?, they could find application in the field of gas sensing and thermistors. The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society 2024. -

Smart Affect Recognition System for Real-Time Biometric Surveillance Using Hybrid Features and Multilayered Binary Structured Support Vector Machine
Human affect recognition (HAR) using images of facial expression and electrocardiogram (ECG) signal plays an important role in predicting human intention. This system improves the performance of the system in applications like the security system, learning technologies and health care systems. The primary goal of our work is to recognize individual affect states automatically using the multilayered binary structured support vector machine (MBSVM), which efficiently classify the input into one of the four affect classes, relax, happy, sad and angry. The classification is performed efficiently by designing an efficient support vector machine (SVM) classifier in multilayer mode operation. The classifier is trained using the 8-fold cross-validation method, which improves the learning of the classifier, thus increasing its efficiency. The classification and recognition accuracy is enhanced and also overcomes the drawback of 'facial mimicry' by using hybrid features that are extracted from both facial images (visual elements) and physiological signal ECG (signal features). The reliability of the input database is improved by acquiring the face images and ECG signals experimentally and by inducing emotions through image stimuli. The performance of the affect recognition system is evaluated using the confusion matrix, obtaining the classification accuracy of 96.88%. 2020 The British Computer Society 2020. Repercussions of global turbulence and market volatility in spot & futures market: India preparedness
This article examines the repercussions of global turbulence and market volatility in Indian Capital market for the period spanning from January 1, 2003 to August 31, 2013 with a total of 2654 observations and it is broken into pre-crisis and post-crisis respectively. The study employed Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (1,1) model to measure the volatility persistence by employing dummy variables. Cointegrating Regression Augmented Dickey Fuller (CRADF) and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) was employed to investigate the casual nexus between spot and futures market in both short and long run equilibrium. The squared residuals of VECM were applied to investigate the lead-lag relationship between the bivariate variables. Our findings indicate that there was a significant change in the post crisis period for spot and futures market volatility. Our result suggests that nothing can be learned and new regulation can only do more harm. Apart from this, nobody knows which financial instrument will be at the centre of the next crisis. Overall, the comprehensive financial sector reform like Credit Default Swap, Valuation Assumptions and Basel II Accord can create more problems and make the investors more complex to meet the global challenges environment. Partial slip and Joule heating on magnetohydrodynamic radiated flow of nanoliquid with dissipation and convective condition
Numerical investigation of three-dimensional flow of an electrically conducting nanofluid over a bidirectional stretching surface is proposed here. The slip flow over a convectively stretching sheet is considered. The flow is caused due to a non-linear stretching surface and Lorenz force. Water and copper nanoparticles are used to form nanoliquid. Suitable transformations are employed to reduce the conservation equations into nonlinear coupled, multidegree ordinary differential equations. Resultant nonlinear two-point boundary value problem is numerically integrated using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth order method. Computed results are verified with existing results under limiting cases. The influences of pertinent parameters on different flow fields are evaluated and presented via graphical and tabular form. It is found that the thermal radiation and convective heating at boundary stabilizes the thermal boundary layer growth. 2017 The Authors -
Operational pattern forecast improvement with outlier detection in metro rail transport system
Transportation is an unavoidable part of every humans life. The mobility system handles the transport of humans from different places using various transport modes. According to a station in a populated area, the main problem is the presence of traffic in peak hours and wasting their valuable time on the road. The only medium which runs above the traffic is metro rails/subways. For these reasons, metro rails become a point of interest for each researchers prophecy and provide valuable recommendations for the smooth functioning of services. Even though, in many cases, the metro systems are affected by abnormal passenger flow. So, this study handles abnormal passenger flow detection and station clustering for the behavior study of a passenger flow system. The research compares outlier detection and anomaly identification for the behavioral analysis of the metro rail passenger flow. The study use data from Kochi Metro Rail Limited for the period 2017 to 2019. Outlier removal has used in passenger flow data before building a forecasting system. In pattern recognition algorithm those components which lie outside the patterns can be considered abnormal (anomaly). The outliers are the component falling apart from the region of interest. The effect of removing the outlier from the time-series pattern is studied against the outlier included pattern to show the improvement. 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature. -
Phyllanthus Emblica Extract Protects the Rat Liver Cells Against the Toxicity of Monosodium Glutamate: Experimental Evidence
Background: Monosodium glutamate (MSG), used widely in the food industry, is a threat to the public health. We investigated whether the MSG administration depletes non-enzymatic antioxidants, i.e., vitamins C and E in the liver of Wistar albino rats. We also examined the restorative effect of the ethanolic extract of Phyllanthus emblica (P. emblica). Methods: Wistar albino rats (n=42) were adapted and then randomly divided into seven groups of: 1) control, 2, 3, 4) MSG treatment, and 5, 6, 7) combined MSG and P. emblica extract treatment. All rat groups were treated daily for 120 days. They were orally administered either MSG alone or MSG plus the extract combined. The rats were then sacrificed and the liver was harvested from each group, and homogenized to examine the levels of vitamins C and E in the liver, using RP-HPLC method. Results: The vitamins C and E levels significantly declined (P<0.05) in the liver of MSG treated groups compared to those of the control rats. The combined treatment (extract + MSG) at low and moderate doses restored the vitamin C levels but it restored vitamin E only at the low dose (P<0.05). Conclusions: This study clearly demonstrated the deterioration of non-enzymatic antioxidants, i.e., vitamins C and E in the rats' liver after chronic exposure to MSG. The findings support the toxic effect and oxidative stress due to MSG exposure to the liver and the beneficial effect of the extract of P. emblica that inhibits the MSG's harmful effect on the liver.
