Prediction and analysis of financial crises using machine learning
This study presents a comparative analysis of various machine learning algorithms for credit risk assessment. The algorithms were tested on two credit datasets: German Credit Dataset and Australian Credit Dataset. The performance of the algorithms was evaluated based on several metrics, including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F-score, and Kappa. The results showed that the FCPFS-QDNN algorithm outperformed other algorithms in both datasets, achieving high accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F-score. On the other hand, the ACO Algorithm and Multilayer Perceptron algorithms were found to perform poorly in both datasets. The findings of this study have significant implications for credit risk assessment in banking and financial institutions. The study recommends the use of the FCPFS-QDNN algorithm for credit risk assessment due to its superior performance compared to other algorithms. 2023, IGI Global. All rights reserved. -
Exploring digital twins: Attributes, challenges and risks
The recent approach to digitalization and digital transformation is based on the focus of every industry to develop systems and practices for optimizing the operational phase of the product lifecycle and beyond. Digital twins have become the buzzword in the domain of digital transformation. These Digital twins, which are a virtual representation of real-world occurrences such as processes, services, or products offer a new perspective to digitalization. It has emerged from Industry 4.0 and involves a mapping of the real physical world and the virtual world through Digital Twinning. Artificial Intelligence, Cryptography, Blockchain, Big Data technologies, and IoT act as technology enablers for Digital Twins. The capability of Digital Twin is its ability to cater to diverse applications. Within a decade, it has penetrated deeply into every functional aspect of business right from Patient Health Information Systems to remote control and maintenance of satellites/ space stations and to agriculture. This chapter has a focus on the key attributes, challenges, and risk factors that pertain to digital twin technologies and provides adequate examples from diverse sectors. The key challenges of digital twin technologies include Modeling the unknown, Transparency, Interpretability, Interactions with physical assets, Large-scale computation, Physical realism, Future projections, Data management, Privacy, Security and Quality. The four facets of risks related to Digital Twins include restrictions in access to system resources, theft of intellectual property, lack of compliance, and integrity issues in data/information. Hence, additional efforts and a holistic approach towards privacy and security are required to manage these risks. The holistic approach should cover hardware, software, and firmware together with the information that passes between them. Further, it is required to ensure that system, assets and data are adequately protected. Digital Twin technologies provide enormous competitive advantage for an organization, and a more pragmatic approach for mitigation of risks associated with digital twins is required. This would involve co-creation of Digital Twins with clients along with combined extensive knowledge of physical assets, disruptive technologies and appropriate security measures. 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Efficiency study of coconut producer companies in India-A DEA approach
The concept of the Farmer Producer Company (FPC) model has been a hot issue, especially during the 2020-21 Indian farmers' protest. Considering the pioneering initiatives of the Coconut Development Board (CDB) in setting up CPCs, we compare the technical efficiencies of CPCs that focus on coconut and its byproducts in Rural India for two consecutive financial years (2018-19 and 2019-20). Coconut Producer Companies' efficiency scores are estimated using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a mathematical technique to assess technical efficiencies across homogeneous units. The results reveal that 35.11 percent of the sampled CPCs for FY 2018-19 are overall technical efficient, and approximately 76 percent are purely technical efficient. It is found that technical inefficiency is reported for a few CPCs due to scale inefficiency. The overall technical and pure technical efficiency have improved in FY 2019-20 compared to the previous period. 2024 Srinesh Thakur, Anvita Electronics, 16-11-762, Vijetha Golden Empire, Hyderabad. -
Why haven't you bought a solar panel? Consumerism at its "Green" best with the Myers-Briggs type indicator
This research study examined the relationships between Myers-Briggs' four personality dimensions and environmentally conscious consumption patterns. The study found that different personality types have different green purchase habits. The authors also propose five strategies for businesses who plan to venture into sustainable consumption. These strategies include leveraging the power of belongingness, forming addictive healthy habits, capitalizing on the domino effect, communicating with either the heart or the head, and prioritizing having experiences above owning things. The study's findings suggest that businesses need to take a more holistic approach to promoting sustainable consumption. Authors use discriminant analysis to evaluate whether each Myers-Briggs personality type had a distinct green purchase habit. For each of the four dichotomies associated with five kinds of green buying behaviors, SPSS was used to construct discriminant analysis indicators and outputs. 2023, IGI Global. Climate change and water insecurity: Who bears the brunt? (A case of Yelenahalli Village, Bengaluru)
Rapid urbanisation and neglect towards traditional water bodies have aggravated water security issues in isolated pockets. In the recent past, they have also manifested into natural disasters in major urban centres such as Bengaluru (Bangalore), Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. An examination of the problem is essential to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal on water security laid down by the United Nations in the context of climate change. This paper explores the various socio-economic costs of water scarcity through a case study of Yelenahalli village in Bengaluru. The study's preliminary results find that the encroachment of water bodies has led to a significant cost to households and local governments. Water scarcity is found to have a differential impact on poor and non-poor households in terms of access and the resultant water consumption due to the prevalence of price discrimination in the private water markets. The disparity in access to water is exacerbated despite the government's commencement of piped water supply due to worsening climate conditions and falling groundwater levels. The Author(s), 2023.
