India Gateway Program: Transformational learning opportunities in an international context
Internationalisation is increasingly important in the social work curriculum. With globalisation and international resettlement, social workers require competencies to work locally with diverse populations as well as overseas. Study abroad experiences are used to enhance international content, cultural sensitivity and self-awareness in curricula. This article evaluates an Australian study tour focussing on students perspectives. Indications are that it was effective in enhancing cultural sensitivity, understanding of factors contributing to inequity, the lived experience of poverty, personal growth and professional identity. Investigating the in-flight performance of the UVIT payload on AstroSat
We have studied the performance of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope payload on AstroSat and derived a calibration of the far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) instruments on board. We find that the sensitivity of both the FUV and NUV channels is as expected from ground calibrations, with the FUV effective area about 35 per cent and the NUV effective area about the same as that of GALEX. The point spread function of the instrument is on the order of 1.2-1.6". We have found that pixel-to-pixel variations in the sensitivity are less than 10 per cent with spacecraft motion compensating for most of the flat-field variations. We derived a distortion correction but recommend that it be applied post-processing as part of an astrometric solution. 2018 The Author(s). -
Classification of epileptic seizures using wavelet packet log energy and norm entropies with recurrent Elman neural network classifier
Electroencephalogram shortly termed as EEG is considered as the fundamental segment for the assessment of the neural activities in the brain. In cognitive neuroscience domain, EEG-based assessment method is found to be superior due to its non-invasive ability to detect deep brain structure while exhibiting superior spatial resolutions. Especially for studying the neurodynamic behavior of epileptic seizures, EEG recordings reflect the neuronal activity of the brain and thus provide required clinical diagnostic information for the neurologist. This specific proposed study makes use of wavelet packet based log and norm entropies with a recurrent Elman neural network (REN) for the automated detection of epileptic seizures. Three conditions, normal, pre-ictal and epileptic EEG recordings were considered for the proposed study. An adaptive Weiner filter was initially applied to remove the power line noise of 50Hz from raw EEG recordings. Raw EEGs were segmented into 1s patterns to ensure stationarity of the signal. Then wavelet packet using Haar wavelet with a five level decomposition was introduced and two entropies, log and norm were estimated and were applied to REN classifier to perform binary classification. The non-linear Wilcoxon statistical test was applied to observe the variation in the features under these conditions. The effect of log energy entropy (without wavelets) was also studied. It was found from the simulation results that the wavelet packet log entropy with REN classifier yielded a classification accuracy of 99.70% for normal-pre-ictal, 99.70% for normal-epileptic and 99.85% for pre-ictal-epileptic. 2016, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht. -
New constituents triterpene ester and sugar derivatives from Panax ginseng Meyer and their evaluation of antioxidant activities
Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (Araliaceae), is a well-known herb and used in the old established system of Oriental remedy, especially in Japan, China and Korea. Four new compounds characterized as (cis)- 7?,11?,19,21-tetra-O-decanoyl-18, 22?-dihydroxy-dammar-1-en-3-one (1), 3?,4?,12?-trihydroxystigmast-5-en-21-yl octadecan-9?,12?-dienoate (2), dammar-12, 24-dien-3?, 6?, 15?-triol-3?-D-arabinopyranosyl-6?-L-arabinopyranoside (3) and dammar-24-en-3?, 6?, 16?, 20?-tetraol-3?-D-arabinopyranosyl-6?-D-arabinopyranoside (4) were isolated and established from the ethyl acetate and butanol extracts of the roots of P. ginseng. Their structures were established on the basis of spectral data and chemical reactions. Natural compounds indicative a great reservoir of materials and compounds with evolved biological activity, including antioxidant. Compounds 14 were investigated in vitro for antioxidant potential using ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), the Nitric oxide (NO) scavenging activity, reducing power, phosphomolybdenum and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging actions, and the decision showed the compounds 3and 4 have probablyessential antioxidant properties than the compounds 1and 2 presented weak activity. 2016 The Authors -
Static analysis tool for identification of permission misuse by android applications
Android is one of the most important and widely used mobile operating systems in the world. The Android operating system utilizes the permission-based model, which permits Android applications to get user data, framework data, gadget data and other assets of Smartphone. These permissions are affirmations declared by the developer of an application. The permissions granted varies from one application to another, depending on its functionality. During installation, permissions to access the resources of the smartphone are requested by apps. Once the client grants the permission, the apps are allowed to access the granted resources as per its requirement. Android OS is susceptible to different security issues owing to the loopholes in security. This paper mainly focuses on identifying how the permissions granted to a specific application is misused by another application using SharedUserID. The paper also proposes a security tool that identifies a list of applications which are misusing the permissions in a user's Android smartphone. The viability of the tool is tested by using a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) implementation of the security tool. Research India Publications. -
Precursor to employee engagement AMID knowledge workers
The main objective of this study is to critically analyze the precursor to employee engagement. The research methodology used in this research is descriptive research. In primary data, responses are collected through well framed questionnaires and direct interaction with the employees to selected sample of 550 respondents of information technology organisations in Bengaluru City. The questionnaire consists of 20 questions based on employee engagement precursor. To reduce the dimension of this an exploratory factor analysis was carried out and 3 factors explaining 65.26% of the variance were derived. The 3 precursors identified as professional contentment (Cronbach's alpha 0.940) career development (Cronbach's alpha 0.836) and job enrichment (Cronbach's alpha 0.826). Green synthesis and electrochemical characterization of rGOCuO nanocomposites for supercapacitor applications
Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were prepared from graphene oxide (GO) by using piperine as a green reducing agent extracted from Piper nigrum. The obtained rGO had few defects and lacked connectivity between the layers. To overcome these defects, copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles were synthesized ultrasonically and nanocomposites of rGOCuO were prepared. The conductivities of the rGO, CuO and rGOCuO nanocomposites were determined by AC impedance spectroscopy in different electrolytes. Morphology, composition and electronic structure of CuO, rGO and rGOCuO nanocomposites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical techniques. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images portrait CuO as a fish caught in the net of rGO layers. The rGOCuO nanocomposite exhibiting lower resistance and higher capacitance was used in fabrication of supercapacitor electrodes. The specific capacitance of the fabricated supercapacitor was found to be 137Fg?1. The supercapacitor performance of the nanocomposite electrode is attributed to the synergistic effect of double-layer capacitance of rGO and redox capacitance of CuO nanoparticles. Non linear thermal radiation effect on Williamson fluid with particle-liquid suspension past a stretching surface
A mathematical analysis of two-phase boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a Williamson fluid with fluid particle suspension over a stretching sheet has been carried out in this paper. The region of temperature jump and nonlinear thermal radiation is considered in the energy transfer process. The principal equations of boundary layer flow and temperature transmission are reformed to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations under suitable similarity transformations. The transfigured equalities are solved numerically with the help of RKF-45 order method. The effect of influencing parameters on velocity and temperature transfer of fluid is examined and deliberated by plotted graphs and tabulated values. Significances of the mass concentration of dust particle parameter play a key role in controlling flow and thermal behavior of non-Newtonian fluids. Theoretical Investigation of Optical WDM Network Performance in the Presence of FWM and ASE Noise
In this article, for an optical star wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network, with quality factor (Q-factor) as performance metric, we investigate the performance degradation due to the combined effects of four-wave mixing (FWM) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. A mathematical model is developed, and the simulations are performed based on the optical frequency grid defined by the ITU-T Recommendation G.692. Further, the analysis is conducted for the optical fibers that are ITU-T compliant viz. G.652, G. 652D, G. 653, G. 654 and G.655. The simulation results show that, compared to the other fiber types, performance of the G. 652D and G.652 fibers is the "best", thus justifying the preferred use of fibers with high dispersion and effective area values. The simulation results also highlight that with the use of a fiber having low dispersion and effective area value, it may not be possible to obtain the desired performance. 2017 by De Gruyter 2017. -
Brand awareness of 'generation y' customers towards doughnut retail outlets in India
The Research is all about knowing the customers acquiring top of mind recall about doughnut retail outlets in Bangalore city, India through various methods. Once the brand is established in the minds of the consumers, it occupies a unique position and special meaning and value is generated. Brand awareness is the consumer's conscious or unconscious decision, expressed through intention or behavior, to repurchase a brand continually. In order to create brand loyalty, advertisers must break consumer habits, help them to acquire new habits and reinforce those habits by reminding consumers of their purchase and encourage them to continue purchasing those products in the future. 'Generation Y' refers to customers millennial, the generation of people born during the 1980s and early 2000s. 'Generation Y' consumer's access social media on daily basis but they often ignore advertisements that are targeted to them. The previous research works on' Generation Y' customers emphasize that marketers must focus on social media marketing to draw the attention of these customers. Determining the brand awareness of 'Generation Y' customers was considered, in order to know the present level of awareness about the doughnut brands, increase the customer traffic and sales as 'Generation Y' customers are the target customers for doughnut retail outlets. -
Dynamical analysis of a model of social behavior: Criminal vs non-criminal population
In this paper, we construct a model motivated by the well known predator-prey model to study the interaction between criminal population and non-criminal population. Our aim is to study various possibilities of interactions between them. First we model it using simple predator-prey model, then we modify it by considering the logistic growth of non-criminal population. We clearly deduce that the model with logistic growth is better than classical one. More precisely, the role of carrying capacity on the dynamics of criminal minded population is discussed. Further, we incorporate law enforcement term in the model and study its effect. The result obtained suggest that by incorporating enforcement law, the criminal population reduces from the very beginning, which resembles with real life situation. Our result indicates that the criminal minded population exist as long as coefficient of enforcement lc does not cross a threshold value and after this value the criminal minded population extinct. In addition, we also discuss the occurrence of saddle-node bifurcation in case of model system with law enforcement. Extraction and characterization of preformed mixed phase graphene sheets from graphitized sub-bituminous coal
In present paper, a facile method is reported to extract mixed phase nanometre-sized carbon sheets from sub-bituminous coal. The lattice constants (La and Lc) of sub-bituminous coal were calculated to be 4.82 and 1.41 nm, respectively. The aromatic layers and average number of carbon atoms in the aromatic lamellae were estimated as 5 and 8, respectively. The obtained graphene sheets exhibits broadened D and G band in addition to a very broad 2D bump. Defect to graphitic ratio is found to be 0.54 indicating less disorder in graphene nanomaterial formed. This is further corroborated by (ID/ID') ratio which was observed to be 3.40, confirming the defect has originated from boundary. The SEM analysis reveals the formation of large number of carbon layers with different shape in the nanometer scale range. Formation of graphene dots in the shape of hexagonal, spherical, graphene layers and corn shaped carbon nanotubes are noticed in the TEM image. -
Heat and mass transfer of triple diffusive convection in boussinesq-stokes suspension using ginzburg-landau model
The nonlinear stability of triple diffusive convection in Boussinesq-Stokes suspension is analysed by using Ginzburg-Landau model. Using the Bernoulli equation obtained from Ginzburg-Landau model, Nusselt number and Sherwood numbers of different solutes are studied to quantify the heat and mass transfer. 3D face recognition based on symbolic FDA using SVM classifier with similarity and dissimilarity distance measure
Human face images are the basis not only for person recognition, but for also identifying other attributes like gender, age, ethnicity, and emotional states of a person. Therefore, face is an important biometric identifier in the law enforcement and human-computer interaction (HCI) systems. The 3D human face recognition is emerging as a significant biometric technology. Research interest into 3D face recognition has increased during recent years due to availability of improved 3D acquisition devices and processing algorithms. A 3D face image is represented by 3D meshes or range images which contain depth information. In this paper, the objective is to propose a new 3D face recognition method based on radon transform and symbolic factorial discriminant analysis using KNN and SVM classifier with similarity and dissimilarity measures, which are applied on 3D facial range images. The experimentation is done using three publicly available databases, namely, Bhosphorus, Texas and CASIA 3D face database. Hybrid botnet detection using ensemble approach
Botnets are one of the most threatening cyber-attacks available today. This paper proposes a hybrid system which can effectively detect the presence of C&C, P2P and hybrid botnets in the network. The powerful machine learning algorithms like BayesNet, IBk, KStar, J48 and Random Tree have been deployed for detecting these malwares. The performance and accuracy of the individual classifiers are compared with the ensemble approach. Labelled dataset of botnet logs were collected from the Malware Facility. Secured data was collected from Christ university network and the combined dataset is tested using virtual test bed. The performance of the algorithms is studied in this paper. Do social and environmental disclosures increase firm value evidence from indian companies
There is a clear shift in the way the companies report their performance through the communications with their stakeholders. Moving from mere profit, the companies are increasingly showing their non-financial performance in terms of sustainability and social responsibility. Companies not only want to just spend on sustainability, but also like to project their activities to gain image among the stakeholders; more often with a separate set of report called corporate sustainability report, which is based on the triple bottom-line (profit, people, and planet). This study focused on understanding the corporate social and environmental reporting trends of Indian non-financial companies and the impact on market valuation. The sample constituted of companies in the BSE-100 index and data for 5 financial years - from FY2010 to FY2014 - were used. This period was chosen as it witnessed several regulatory changes in the triple bottom line reporting in the form of new Companies Act, 2013 and Clause 55 of the listing agreement. Paired 'f' test and panel data regression model were used for analyzing the data. This study found that the level of social and environmental disclosures has significantly improved post business responsibility reporting and positively significantly influenced market valuation. -

Unsteady three-dimensional MHD flow of a nano Eyring-Powell fluid past a convectively heated stretching sheet in the presence of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and Joule heating
The purpose of this study is to investigate the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic three-dimensional flow induced by a stretching surface. An incompressible electrically conducting Eyring-Powell fluid fills the convectively heated stretching surface in the presence of nanoparticles. The effects of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and Joule heating are accounted in heat transfer equation. The model used for the nanofluid includes the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. The highly nonlinear partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations with the help of similarity method. The reduced complicated two-point boundary value problem is treated numerically using RungeKuttaFehlberg 45 method with shooting technique. A comparison of the obtained numerical results with existing results in a limiting sense is also presented. At the end, the effects of influential parameters on velocity, temperature and nanoparticles concentration fields are also discussed comprehensively. Transparency and effective e-Governance: a case of telecentres in the Indian State of Karnataka
Purpose: It is the responsibility of any government to ensure efficient, transparent and reliable services to the common man through telecentres. The purpose of this study is to take into account the influence of people and process on transparency that leads to effective e-governance. Design/methodology/approach: This study involved collecting data through questionnaire method from 400 citizens who visited the telecentres. Data were analysed by conducting chi-square test and independent sample t-test, and it was found that there exists significant influence of location on transparency. Findings: The current study reiterates the fact from literature that transparency in transactions enables effective e-governance. Beneficiaries perceive that people and processes have influence on transparency. Research limitations/implications: The research adds up to the literature in establishing that there exist differentials among the rural and urban population with respect to transparency. Results could be skewed, as there could be an impact of population density across urban and rural areas. Practical implications: This study brings out a framework and an action plan for the government to implement and ensure transparency in processes leading to effective e-governance. Social implications: The action plan ensures transparency in service delivery leading to effective e-governance. Increased transparency empowers citizens with increased trustworthiness towards services delivered through telecentres. Originality/value: This paper fulfils the need for an action plan to assure citizens to use deliveries through telecentres with better transparency. The aspect of transparency is not being studied in the present context of service delivery by the government authorities in India. Connect among employee engagement and three key of organisational commitment level - An empirical exploration AMID techs
The main objective of this paper is to gravely examine the link between employee engagement level and affective, continuance and normative commitment level in information technology (IT) organisations in Bangalore city. In primary data, responses are collected through well framed questionnaires and direct interaction with the employees to selected sample of 550 respondents of 10 Information Technology organisations in Bangalore city. The result revealed that employee engagement level explained 32% of the variation in total commitment. Since the P value is less than 0.01, it can be inferred that the linkage between employee engagement level and total commitment is statistically significant. The study identified a strong, positive correlation between employee's engagement level and affective commitment (d = 0.347, p =0.000) and employee's engagement level and normative commitment (d =.265, p =0.000), which were statistically significant. The study also revealed a positive correlation between employee engagement level and continuance commitment, which was not statistically significant (d =.072, p =0.096). The current study adds to the research pointing at employee's engagement level as a promising underlying mechanism to improve employee's organisational commitment level. IAEME Publication.
